A SONG OF TEARS
(For the X.Z. Tablet.) Yearnings and pain, sorrow’s refrain Sadly awakes in the heart again— Memories culled from the faded, years — Scenes that rise through a mist of tears. From life’s journey of hopes and fears— Hopes that were cherished in vain. Let the tears flowanguish and woe Chasten the years on this earth below ; Beats there a heart that is free from care ? Or a soul unclouded by despair ? ’Tis tears that soften the trials we bear, And sweeten the joys we know. By God’s decree, sorrow shall be—- ' Behold when despair afflicteth thee, The Saviour, nailed on the cross of wood, Who shed for us tears of precious blood ; Think of the Mother of Grief who stood By the Cross of Calvary. ~ A sob and a sigh—Death passfes by— The soul is borne to its God on high— The cross of life at His feet is laid In clemency shall the tears be weighed— Healed the heart that hath wept and prayed In love that shall never die. rHarold Gallagher, Dunedin.
