ST. BENEDICT’S CATHOLIC CLUB, AUCKLAND

(From an occasional correspondent.) On Monday evening, July 10, the first meeting of the season of the literary and debating branch of St. Benedict’s Catholic Club was held, when a debate on the following subject- took place: * Should a Catholic vote Prohibition ?’ There was a fair number of members present. Rev. Father Dunphy presided, and officiated as judge. The following speakers took part: AffirmaMessrs. F. G. J. Temm, B. Slade, J. O’Connell, and A. W. Temm; negative— J. G. Foy, T. Treacy, P. Lillis, and L. O’Malley, An interesting debate took place on the question, which resulted in the Rev. Father Dunphy declaring the affirmative to have won, by 6 points—Bß to 82 points. Father Dunphy, in delivering his judgment, pointed out that on the whole he was well pleased with the debate. As only five minutes were allotted each speaker, time did not permit the question to be fully dealt with. He it was a good opening for the debating season, and he hoped the members would take an interest in this branch of the club. Mr. Foy, on behalf of the negative side, moved a hearty vote of thanks to Father Dunphy for judging the debate, and congratulated the winners on their victory. Mr. F. G. J. Temm, on behalf of the 'affirmative side, seconded the motion, and said Father Dunphy had spent his evening in the club as judge at some personal inconvenience. He was sure all appreciated his kindness. He also thanked him for his kindly words of encouragement and for his useful and wise criticism, which would prove of great benefit to the members. * The motion was carried by hearty acclamation. It was decided- that the next meeting would be devoted to impromptu speeches. Mr. C. B. Reid has been elected secretary, vice Mr. E. B. Jones (enlisted). Mr. Leo. Hodgson, recently returned invalided from the front, is now on the way towards recovery.
