FEDERATED CATHOLIC CLUBS, WELLINGTON

The executive of the Federated Catholic Clubs held their fortnightly meeting at St. Patrick’s Hall, Wellington, on June 26, there being present Messrs. .1. L. Lcydou (presiding), G. Dee, M. O’Kane, J. Fagan, T. H. Foster, and the hon. sec. (A. J. Ridler). Notification was received from his Grace Archbishop O’Shea that Very Rev. Father O’Connell, S.M., had been appointed spiritual director to the society. Father O’Connell attended the meeting, and, after having been cordially welcomed by the president, stated that he was very pleased to bo connected with the Federation, and promised to do all in Ms power to help Catholic clubs. At the recent conference it was decided to include in the shield contest a religious section, comprising a list of ten questions most likely to arise in everyday intercourse with non-Catholics, and therefore questions with which every Catholic layman should make himself” familiar. In pursuance of this resolution, the spiritual director was requested to submit ten questions which he considered most suitable for the purpose, and the following are the subjects fixed. 1. Why do Catholics go to confession? 2. What is meant by Papal infallibility? J. What is the Me Tv mere decree? Arc mixed marriages absolutely forbidden ? 4. What does the Catholic Church think of Socialism ? 5. Why does the Church condemn Freemasonry? 6. Has the Church always encouraged arts and sciences? 7. Can Catholics justify the Inquisition? S. Is one religion as good as another? 9. To whom do we owe the existence of the Bible? 10. Why do Catholics build and maintain their own schools when free schools are open to them ? It will be seen that all the above are questions of vital importance, and every Catholic layman would do well to study them. The sincere thanks of the executive arc due to Father O’Connell for the expenditure of time and labor involved in the selection of these subjects, which so admirably suit the purpose. The manager of The Catholic. M a<jazin e reported that he has been very successful in obtaining subscribers, he being very few short of the number specified by agreement to bo obtained before actual publication. It was decided to present a tliploma of honor to Mr. C. J. Lenihan, of St. Anne’s Club (Wellington South), in recognition of meritorious service rendered. A letter was received from the editor of the Tablet, drawing attention to the Catholic Social Guild’s course in connection with social questions of the day. It was resolved that, as the executive strongly favors the scheme, it should be brought under the notice of all affiliated clubs.
