Temuka
(From our own correspondent.) January 5. Mr. Ryan, representative of the Tablet,' arrived in Temuka to-day. Rev. Dr. Geaney, S.M. (Greenmeadows) is on a visit to his relatives at Pleasant Point. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament took place in St. Joseph’s Church on Sunday after the 10.30 o’clock Mass, and was continued throughout the day. In the evening the usual procession was held, and an eloquent sermon was preached to a very large congregation by Rev. Dr. Geaney, S.M. At both Masses on Sunday reference was made to the visit of the Tablet representative, and the congregation was urged to give that admirable journal their generous support. It is confidently expected that within the next week or two the roll of Temuka subscribers will be very much increased. '' Despite the inclemency of the weather, the Dominion Theatre was packed recently when the pupils of St. Joseph’s School gave their annual entertainment. Every item met with a good reception, and enepres were numerous. The programme opened with a pianoforte dftet by Misses Pearse and Daly, followed by an action song in costume, ‘ Gay little girls from Japan.’ Mr. J. Spillane recited ‘ Emmet’s speech from the dock ’ with 'stirring effect. A very pretty ribbon dance was performed by Misses M. Mitten, C. Burgoyne, Y. Brosnahan, M. Falska, M. Sullivan, M. Fitzgerald, D. Sugrue, R. McGillum, E. Moran, F. Wareing, and E. Naismith. ‘Tile auctioneer,’ by Masters L. Brosnahan and J. Burgoyne was loudly applauded, as were the comic songs by Mr. Bell. A pianoforte duet by Misses B. Hoara, M. Mitten,, M. Sullivan, B. Blyth, E. Moran, F. Routledge, K. Gregan, and F. Jackson brought to a close the first part of the programme. The second part consisted of a pianoforte duet by Misses L. Hay, M. Bain, Watson, K. Wareing, B. Hoare, and M. Quirke; song, ‘The deathless army,’ Mr. J. Spillane ; a drama, ‘ Laughing gas,’ Masters L. Brosnahan (Dr. Disculum), J. Small (Joshua, an apprentice), D. Sugrue (Mr. Simpson), and W. Collins and T. Sheen (policemen) : ‘ Sailing,’ by the junior boys ; hornpipe, by Misses Falska and Sullivan ; Highland reel, by Misses Scott (2), Roulston,' and Hoare. The song, ‘lreland, I love you,’ and • the tableau, ‘Erin,’ brought the concert to a close. The accompanists were Misses G. Daly and B. Hoare. During the interval, Rev. Father Kerley, S.M., thanked the audience for their attendance, and congratulated the Sisters of St. Joseph on the quality of the entertainment, which showed that a great deal of attention and care had been paid to the training of the children.
