DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

(By telegraph, from our own correspondent.)

• July 22. At the meeting of the local branch of the Hibernian Society this evening sick pay amounting to over £2l was passed for payment.

The Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, who left some time ago on a trip to America for the benefit of his health, is expected to arrive back in Auckland next month.

The promotion to Chief Detective of Mr. Peter McMahon has been well received here, where for many years he has assiduously and conscientiously discharged his public duties. He is a member of the Holy Family confraternity and Hibernian Sociaty. A euchre tournament took place last Friday evening in St. Benedict's Hall. Miss Finnerty carried off the lady's prize, and the gentleman's trophy went to Mr. Daly. Amongst those present were Rev. Fathers Tigar, Doyle, Brennan, Forde, and Kirrane. The net profits of the function go towards the Remuera Church debt.

A social was held in the Trades Hall last Friday evening under the auspices and the management of the Cathedral branch of the Children of Mary confraternity, and in aid of the St. Patrick's Convent Schools. It was eminently successful, and. the efforts put forth by the promoters will certainly assist the funds of the good Sisters of Mercy in the Cathedral parish. Widespread regret was felt throughout the city and suburbs yesterday, when it became known that the Ven. Archdeacon Brodie, of Waihi, was seriously ill. Rev. Father Holbrook went immediately to Wailii to officiate for the Archdeacon, and his Lordship the Bishop proceeded there this morning. The news received to-day concerning the Archdeacon's condition was reassuring, and gave great relief to his many rnends. At a meeting of the local branch of the Hiber-

nian Society a vote of sympathy with the Archdeacon in his illness was passed, and a hope expressed for his speedy recovery. _. ;

The annual meeting \>f the Particular Council of the St. Vincent-de Paul Society was held in the Marist Brothers' School yesterday. The president (Bro. C. Little) occupied the chair. Among those present were his Lordship the Bishop, and Rev. Fathers Patterson, Smiers, and Kirrane, the officers of the various conferences in and around the city, also the officers of the newly-formed ladies' conference. The annual report and balance sheet were presented and adopted. His Lordship the Bishop spoke approvingly of the society, and extolled the meritorious work of its members work, the nobility of which could not be excelled—succoring and comforting the needy and distressed. God would prosper their undertaking (said his Lordship), and his (the Bishop's) assistance could at all times be counted upon to aid and extend the society. A hearty vote of thanks to his Lordship for his attendance was carried byacclamation.
