DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

The final for the Senior Grade Schools Championship was played off between Christian Brothers and North-east Valley prior to the Northern-Nomads fixture" on Saturday, The boys of both teams showed promising form, auguring well for the prosperity and attractiveness of the Association code as the juveniles developed into manhood. Christian Brothers were the heavier team, and won the championship by 3 goals to nil, the scorers being Muirhead (2) and Newman. McGregor, Jervis, and the Campbell brothers played well for the North-east Valley. Mr. Tily was referee. On Wednesday evening ‘of last week St. Joseph’s Hall was crowded on the occasion of a dramatic entertainment and concert given in aid of the hall funds by members of St. Joseph’s Ladies’ Club. The opening piece was the comedy, ‘ The Greatest Plague in Life,’ in which the woes of a harassed housewife in search of a domestic help were illustrated with considerable ability and no little humor. The cast of characters was as follows:—Mrs. 'Bustle, Miss M. Wilkie; Mary Bustle, Miss F. Kennedy; Grandmother Bustle, Miss R. Johnson; Biddy O’Rafferty, Miss M. Hannagan; Kitty Clover, Miss M. Hansen; Miss Moonshine, Miss Black; Miss Bridget McGuire, Miss M. Kelly; Hazy Black, Miss M. Munro. A farce, entitled, ‘No Cure, No Pay,’ was also presented. The motive of this was to show that the best cure for imaginary ailments is good, healthy exercise. This piece was responsible for much amusement, and was heartily enjoyed. Those who took part in it were:—Mrs. Languish, Miss R. Johnson; Alice (her daughter), Miss M. Wilkie; Lucy Aiken, Miss N. O’Sullivan; Jenny Carter, Miss McLelly; Susan Dean, Miss S. Metcalfe; Bridget, Miss M. Rowan; Aunt Maria Midget, Miss M. Hannagan, During the evening highly acceptable concert items were given by Mrs. R. A. Power, who sang * Vashti ’ and ‘ Melisande in the wood ’ in her usually finished manner; Miss Brady, who gave a very acceptable rendering of * May day morn,’ and Mr. Poppelwell, who also contributed a vocal item. Miss Black and Mr. T. Laffey gave recitations. In every instance the performers were encored. At the interval Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., took the opportunity of thanking the performers for their services, especially Miss Black and Messrs. Poppelwell and Laffey, who, at a few minutes' notice, had come forward to fill the places of some performers who had been prevented from appearing through illness, and also the audience for their attendance. The accompanists during the evening were Mrs. Woods, Misses Drumm and Millar.
