(By Telegraph from our own correspondent.) July 17. Two events have stirred the city in the past week. An attempt has been made to dislodge from his position the city engineer attempt which has evoked strong protests from the press, while councillors are equally divided on the subject. The matter comes up again on Thursday for further consideration. The second event was the discovery of considerable pilfering on the wharf. 1 b His Lordship Bishop Grimes, accompanied by Rev. Dr. Kennedy, arrived here yesterday by the East Coast steamer, and was met on arrival by Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, V.G. ; Rev. Fathers Holbrook and Edge. In the evening his Lordship preached in the Cathedral on devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He showed that from early times down to the present day this devotion was practised and encouraged by the Church. To-day his Lordship and party visited the various convents and scholastic institutions, with which ,he was very pleased. To-morrow his Lordship leaves by the Atua for the Islands.
