ST JOSEPH'S CONVENT, MANAIA

Despite^ the ''boisterous weather (says the Waimate Witness) there was" a large attendance at the Manaia Town Hall on the evening of December 15, the occasion being the _ annual Christmas entertainment and presentation of prizes in connection with the pupils. of St. Joseph's, Convent. The conTent pupils provided the whole of the entertainment. The items by the elder boys and girls , were rendered in such talented style that the entertainment was generally voted first-class. Especially well were the different pianoforte items rendered, which bespoke much untiring and careful tuition on the part of the Sisters in charge of the convent. The following programme/was rendered: — Action song, infants; piano duet, Masters W. Bigham, C. Hill, J. Bolger, and E. Wells; song, juniors ; piano quartet, Misses M. Ryan, E. Hastie, M. O'Donnell, C. McKenzie; action song, boys; piano quartet, Misses Landers (2), V. Howard, and D. Uingender; part song, pupils; piano duet, Misses Mabel Gilmour and Maggie Campbell; vocal item, senior girls ; piano item, • Misses Milner, Campbell (2), Butler, Howard, and Gilmbur^ song, Miss F. Milner; piano solo, Miss Wills.. The concert part of the programme concluded with the comedietta, V Who is to inherit,' by the senior girls, the principal . parts being ke £,£ y Mi f, se \L. Hird, M. Ryan, F. Doyle, B. Howard, ML O'Donnell, M. Milner, M. Francis, and Masters W. Ryan and A. New. At the conclusion of the concert programme, Mr. J. *£ el^ on > after apologising for the unavoidable absence of Father O'Dwyer, complimented the children on the excellence of their entertaining efforts, also the Sisters in charge of the convent for the brilliant results achieved by ™ eir vP upils for the year - Assisted by Mr. Denis Ryan; Mr. Meldon then presented prizes to the school children as follow: — Standard VII. —L.
