ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

(From our own correspomdent.) m. in- June 9. The work of improving the appearance of the Sacred Heart Basilica by the addition of domes is now being undertaken. fa The Hibernian Society formed at the Lower Hutt continues to make gcod progress, and the members are now considering the ad/isability of securing a special club room. In order to encourage and develop the social side of club life, a reunion of members of the Young Men's Club was hoA on Tuesday evtn n^, and a \ery agreeable time scent. ' & r lh 3 Brooklyn Catholics are bent on making their first social a really enjoyable cue. No efiorts have been spared to pro\ide the means essential to Hie spending: of a pleasant evening, and en Tuesday next large numbers are expected to visit this growing suburb-the latest to be connected with the city by electric tramway • T , he f % me , mberE * of t h e Altar Society in the parish of Wellington South have decided to hold each month a social reunion en a small s'.-a'e. The first of these reunions too!c place in the schoolroom on Friday evening test, in the form of a progressive euchre tournament Ine ladies' prize was won by Mrs. Campbell and the gentlemen sby Mr. P. Outline. r l he evening proved a very pleasant one. A wedding of considerable interest to our young people was celebrated at St. Joseph" s Church on Wednesday. r Jhe contracting parties were Mr. M.Casey of the City Engineer's staff, and Miss Collins, youngest daughter of Mr. R. P. Coll ns, of Lllice street The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Father Hills The happy couple are spending their honeym c on in the Wanganui district. The members of the. local Young Men's Club \iho journeyed to Palmcrston North (n Saturday re'turnwl to the city on Monday ni._ht. They received a right loyal welcome, and on Sunday w.-ic driven out to Feilding. Opportunity was ta en cf the vit.it to present the local club with a diploma for exhiUticn in the club rooms. Even by the Catholic laymen outside the club members, the visitors were treated in a most hospitable manner. On Sunday evening a. r 1 r the usual sermon at St Mary of the Inge's', Boulcott street, Ke-v. Father Kimbell briefly addressed tie ccngiegatiuii on the matter of congregational singing. Fe io>nted out that in the early years of the Church it was the custom in Englishspeaking countries for the congregation to take part in the singing of the services, and explained that this grand practice had to be suspended during those years when in the home lands the Caiholic religion was proscribed. Continuing, he sr-t le of the Leauties of the custom, and announced that in future the congregation would be expected to jcin in the singing. The question of erect ng a suitable Catholic hall has been under consideration for some time. The site and a donation of £500 from'Mr Martin Kennedy are available, and with a little combined energy en the part of our young men a hail, should soon be a thing of reality. It is quite likely that the more fortunate of our Catholics will imitate Mr. Kei irody's example. There can -be no quest-ion as to the need cf .better dub rooms for our young men and as to the ureen^y of the matter of the Catholics of the Empire City having a hall of their own. I learn that a meeting of delegates representing the various Catholic bodies wi'l shortly be convened to consider the taking of immediate steps.
