(From our own correspondent.) May 7. The many friends of Mr. John Cumin will regret to learn that he is at present lying dangerously ill at the presbytery, Boulcott street. The Rev. Father O'llallahan, parish priest of Kumara, is at present in Wellington on his way to visit his parents in Ireland and to recruit his health by a well-earned rest. The weekly meeting of the Catholic Young Men's Literary Society was held cm Monday evening There was a e;ood attendance of members. The; rules formulated by a special committee were discussed and .idopted. The programme drawn up by tiie same committee was also presented. Speaking at New Plymouth on Tuesday e»ve?iing last, Dr. Valentine, of the Public Health Department, referred to the fact that in Wellington the indigent sick fotund their true friends in the Catho'ic and Salvation Army homes. ' Mother Mary Joseph Aubert was,' said the doctor, ' a noble woman, and into her homo incurables were taken.' Continuing, the speaker staled that many people associated with the army, the " blare of trumpet and beat of drum." but that organisat'cm does a great deal of good.' with. The secretary was instructed to comim!unlcate with other centres for the same purpose. A letter was received from tihe recently-formed Napier Society announcing its decision to join the Federation. The Mastertoh branch is already in existence, amid steps for tue formation of one at Petone are well advanced It was decided to send a delegate to represent the young men of the Colony at the Catholic Congress to be held at Melbourne in October. Circulars on this matter are being issued to the various federated societies..
