DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN.
We are requested to state that on Friday night the members of St. Joseph's Catholic Social and Literary Club will be entertained by a gentleman whose abilities to mystify and amnse are well known, and who has on previous occasions provided an hour's pleasant entertainment. The balance sheet of the St. Patrick's night concert, held in the Garrison Hall in aid of the building fund of St. Joseph's Hall, shows that the gross receipts amounted to £78 Bi, and the expenses to £27 8s 3d, leaving a net profit of £50 19s 9d. The result ia highly satisfactory, and reflects much credit on the energy and enthusiasm of the committee, and especially on the popular hon. secretary, Mr. W. H Haydon, on whom the brunt of the work fell. We understand that Mr Haydon has placed hi* services at the disposal of the committee for next year's celebration, an offer which has been accepted with pleasure. Sunday being the feast of Pentecost Pontifical High Mass was celebrated at 11 o'clock at St. Joseph's Cathedral by his Lordship Bishop Verdon, Rev. Father Cleary being assistant priest. Rev. Father O'Reilly deacon, Rev. P. O'Neill subdeacon, and Rev. Father Murphy master of ceremonies. The occasional sermon was preached by Rev. Father O'Reilly. The music of the Mass — Weber's in G — was rendered in a devotional and finished manner by the choir under the conductorship of Mr. Vallis, Mrs. J. Woods presiding at the organ. The many friends of the Rev. John Ryan will be pleased to learn that he received the warmest marks of esteem and regard from the olergy and also from many of the laity at all the places of call on his journey to Auckland. We learn that Father Ryan was greatly touched by the manifestations of kindness and good-will shown to him. He left Auckland for San Francisco on Saturday afternoon by the Ventura and had for fellow passenger Father Costello, of Westport, who is also taking a trip to the Old Land. On Monday evening a meeting of the olergy and laity was held in St. Joseph's Hall for the purpose of taking the necessary steps to prepare an address from the Catholic body for presentation to the Duke of Cornwall on his visit to Dum-din. His Lordship Bishop Verdon presided, and explained the object of the meeting. Mr. John Carroll and several other speakers expressed their approval of the presentation of an address to H.R.H. on behalf of the Bishop, clergy, and laity of the diocese. The following were appointed as committee to draw up the address, and arrange other details : — His Lordship the Bishop, Rev. Fathers Murphy and Cleary, and Messrs. Carroll, Callan, Columb, and Woods.
