DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN.

A large number of children, who have been under instruction for some time, make their first Communion at St. Patrick's Basilica this (Thursday) morning. The devotion of the Forty Hours commences in St. Joseph's Cathedral on Friday morning, and will be continual on Saturday, terminating with High Mass on Sunday. On last Sunday a presentation was made to the Rev. Father E. P. O'Donnell by members of the congregation at Mosgiel, the occasion being the first anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. The devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration will take place at St. Patrick's Basilica, Oamaru, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the 7th. Bth, and 9th prox. The Rev. Father Murphy, of Dunedin, and a number of other priests will assist, and sermons and instructions appropriate to the devotion will be delivered. j The new church at Millers Flat will be solemnly bkssed and opened on Sunday. The ceremony will be performed by the Very Rev. Dean Mackay, of Oamaru. The preacher ci the occasion will be the Very Rev. Father O'Neill, Milton. Rev. Father Coiley, of Dunedin, and other members of the rev. clergy, have promised to be present. An efficient choir, under the direction of Mr. J. J. Woods, Lawrence, will assist. Facilities will be afforded residents of Lawrence to attend the ceremony. An important meeting of the Dunedin Catholic Literary Society was held in St. Joseph's Hall on Monday evening. This being magazine night considerable interest was taken in the proceedings. The magazine was edited by Mr. H. McCormack, and the articles were throughout of a high level of excellence, and lost nothing in the reading, being listened to with very marked interest. The editor was warmly congratulated for the admirable manner in which he had performed his duties. A very enjoyable evening was spent by the members of the Dunedin Catholic Men's Social Club and their friends in St. Joseph's Hall on Friday last. There was a very large attendance, the hall being comfortably filled. Among those present was a large number of ladies. The hall waa well supplied with chairs, table«, and materials for various grmes. During the evening vocal and instrumental selections were kindly contributed by some of the ladies and gentlemen present. Father Murphy announced that about forty gentlemen had given in their names as intending members, and, also, that it had been decided to reduce the annual subscription to five shillings. In consequence of the devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration taking place in St. Joseph's Cathedral this week, it was decided that the next meeting of the club should be on Friday evening, July 7. Record has the following item of news, which will be of interest to many of our Dunedin readers .—. — The Rev. Mother Mary Gabriel, accompanied by five nuns of her order, have arrived at Freemantle. These members of the Dominican order, as our readers are aware, are bound for Gr^enoujjh, near Gerald ton, whither in the course oi a few days they •will proceed by train. They are at present guiMs of the Convent of Mercy, Victoria Square. Be.^ides Mother Gabriel, to who^e services to religion we have already alluded, another member of the pioneer nuns of the Dunpdin community has eo*»ie to We-t Australia, in the person of the Mother Mary de Kicci, who aUo was among the number who came out with the late Bishop Moran in 1871, and who likewise has borne her part bravely in the gieat works accomplished in the past. Dr. Kirby had been a fellow-student at'bollege of the reigning Pope, by whom he was held in the highest possible affection and esteem. The other nuns are tbe Sisters Mary Gonzales, Mary Bonaventure.
