ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON.

(From our own correspondent.)

September 10. ANOTHER very enjoyable social was given in Thomas' Hall on Tuesday by the parishioners of Thorndon, in aid of the fund for painting the cathedral. The attendance was all that the promoters could desire, in fact the hall was packed to its utmost holding capacity Among those present were the Very Rev. Dr. Watters, Very Rev Father Lewis, Rev. Father Holley, and Rev. Father O'Shea. The first part of the evening was devoted to music, when vocal items were contributed by Misses Hewitt, Collins, and Twohill, and Messrs G-ordon, Savieri, Zachariah and Twohill. Dancing was indulged in for a couple of hours to the strains of Cimino's band, whilst the duties of Ms.C. were efficiently discharged by Mes-srs. O'Donnell and Finucane. Mr. Scanlon being secretary to the committee. His Grace Archbishop Redwood blessed and opened a new church at Levin on Sunday last, the sacred edifice being dedicated to St. Andrew. There was a very large congregation, among whom were numbers of non-Catholics of the district. A small but efficient choir sang the musical portions of the Mass. His Grace preached an impressive discourse, in the course of which he spoke of the good work performed by Father Melu in the district, and expressed his regret at the accident which had happened to him in the early part of the previous week. Reference was also made to the labours of Father De Lach in ministering to the spiritual wants of the people of Devin and District. At the conclusion of the sermon a collection was taken when about £40 were received. In consequence of the unavoidable absence of Father Melu, Father Herbert of St. Patrick's College, assisted at the ceremony. The Rev. Father Doherty, who has bt-en for soaie months in Hawera, in place of the Rev. Father O'Meara, who had to take a holiday in consequence of ill health, has returned to Te Aro parish Father O'Meara, I am pleased to say, has been much benefited by his trip to Australia.

The Very Rev. Father Lewis hag gone to Wanganui to assist the Very Rev. Father Kirk at the devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration which commences to-morrow.

The Wellington drapers are quite elated as there was a pronounced boom in the blanket trade during the week. It is said that a large number of our legislators provided themselves with pairs of these useful household requisites during the past week for the purpose of ' dossing ' on the floor of the House during the stonewall which took place. Pillows, cushions, and rugs were also among the paraphernalia which were stacked away in the corridors and other parts of our law manufactory.
