DOMINICAN CONVENT HIGH SCHOOL AND ST. JOSEPH'S QUEENSTOWN.
(Wakatip Mail.) The aunual distribution of prizes and show of work in connection with the above schools, previous to tbe »acation, took place in St Joseph's schoolroom on Tuesday, the 18th December. The Rev Father Burke presided. There were present also the Rev Father Lynch and a number of relations and friends of the childreo, so that the room, which had been tastefully decorated, was quite full. The programme given passed off very satisfactorily, and tbe excellence with which some of the numbers were performed reflected great credit on the teachers. The space available at the sides and on the walls of the room did not permit of the work and numerous articles being seen to advantage. Nevertheless, in point of excellence and variety the display was an attractive one and seemed to be up to that of previous years ■ it did honour to the talent of the scholars aa well as to the taste and skill of the teachers. Some of the fancy needlework on the side tables was beautifally done ; in fact, there were so many tastefully executed cushions, banners, mantle-drapes, brackets, antimacassers, etc., that it would be difficult, and, therefore, invidious to say which was deserving of most praise. The paintings and drawings hung around were also remarkably good, especially those executed by the Misses Mountney, Allan, Firth and Parsons. One painting in oils by Miss Allan, representing a Swiss scene, was beautifully finished. There was also a fine lake scene by Miss Mouotney, and a large painting of similar character by Miss Firth, who shows great taste for landscapes. A pretty painting on glass of a flamingo, with appropriate background, by Mibs Ella Firth, and two crayon drawings of Swiss scenery by Miss Laura Parsons are also well worthy of notice.
