Mr. Skexe reports for the week ending April 30, 1879, — | Apiil closes very quietly, the incoming month will set the ploughs fairly agoing. Ordinary labour is plentiful for pioper men. The late an ivalb came at the wrong season. The building trade is brisk. Coupk-s and shepherds are still quiet. Most tiades are well employed, and there is veiy little grumbling, only unsuitable people cry out. Wages — Boys, 6s to ]0s ; couple?, £Go to £90 ; ploughmen and shepherds, £52 to £70; cooks, waiters, grooms, etc., 20s to 40s; dny labourers, bush, road, and rail, 8s and 9s : ordinary girls, 10s to los ; upper do., 15s to 30s; bakers, country, 40i anil found. Messrs A. and H. Mercer report for the week ending April j 30 :— Retail price: only. Fresh butter in \Va and lib prints best and favourite brands, Is Gd per lb ; ordinary butter, Is4d to Is mi per 1b ; powdered and salt butter, Is 4d to Is 5d per lb.; salt butter in keg, Is to Is Id per lb., but little demand at present. Cheese, best quality, lOd to lld per lb ; side and rolled bacon, lOd to lid per lb ; Colonial hams, Is per lb. Hams and side bacon scarce at present. Eggs are scarcely to l>e hnd this week, and retailing at 3s per doz. Mr. J. Fleming repo.u iov the week ending April 30th, 1879 :—: — Wholesale prices, new oats, 2s 4d to 2s Gd ; old, 2s 9d to 3s per bushel ; milling wheat, 3s 3d to 3s Cd per bushel ; chicks, 2s Gd to 2s 9d ; barley, malting, Gs to 6s Gd per bushel ; feed, 3s to 3s Gd ; pollard, £~> 10s per ton; bian, £4: per ton; flour, £9 per ton; oatmeal, £16 10s per ton ; potatoes, £4 5s per ton ; hay, £4 per ton ; chaff, £4 to £4 10s per ton ; straw, £2 3s per ton ; onions, 9s. Mr. Montajrue Pym will sell by auction on Saturday • next some sections of land in liattray Street, Dunedin. The property stands immediately adjo'ning that of his Lordship the Bishop. The terms are extremely easy.
