THE HOLY FATHER ON THE PLAGUES OF ITALY.
Ist his reply to the address of the College of the Prelatura and the Tribunals, the Holy Father said t " I think you must have observed how, in our day, God is displaying hi* justice in the plagues with, which he is smiting Italy, first, there i 9 the Revolution, which, destroys but does not build up> and aggravates but does not alleviate ; which enters the mansion to impoverish, and the cottage to oppress. With effrontery it enters the sinctuary, prying every where that it may get everything into its passession. The Tiber began with its inundations, and then tbe volcanic fires caused heavy lossos in the Soutli of Italy. And now a pestilence, fatal to the young, though it lasted but a few days, has already cut off its numerous victims, chiefly as if God wished to preserve a large number of children from, the moral corruption of the age.
