Wiiangarei. Between the 15th and 17th August last, from the R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Onerahi, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Air Department), a l h.p. Crompton-Parkinson electric motor, No. 556, 400440 volts, 1-8 amps, 50. cycles, 940 r.p.m.; value, £lO. Identifiable.

Whangarei. —Between the 28th September and Bth October last, from a shed at the military camp, Three Mile Bush Road, Kamo, the property of WILLIAM WILFRED LILLE a 1-5 h.p. Crompton-Parkinson electric motor, No. 554, 400-440 volts, star No. M 982, 2-5 amps, double V-shaped pulley and size 90a V belts; value, £l6 10s. Identifiable.

Henderson. The property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Air Department), four pressed-steel Ford 10 motor-car wheels, painted air force blue with chromiumplated hub-caps, each fitted with a 500 by 16 retread tire, serial Nos. 6526027, 174998, 4/865503, and 6526202/4863605, and tubes; total value, £22. Tires identifiable. During the night of 24th-25th October last, a motor-car was unlawfully removed from the parking area, R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Whenuapai, and when it was recovered on 25th October last in West’s Road, Whenuapai, it was discovered that the wheels, tires, and tubes had been stolen.

Auckland.— EßNEST ALFRED GRINROD (correct name/ERNEST ALFRED GRINDRQD), cottage destroyed by fire (see Police Gazette, 1944, page 701): Complainant' is unable to account for the articles described below, and it is ■> considered likely that they were stolen from the cottage on 29th May last: Eight stainless-steel table knives, Firth brand; four E.P.N.S. Al dessert spoons ; two stainlesssteel dessert spoons ; eight stainless-steel bread, and butter knives, Firth brand ; two E.P.N.S. jainspoons ; nine E.P.N.S. dessert forks; ten teaspoons, some stainless and some E.P.N.S. ; two E.P.N.S. butter-knives ; and a stainless-steel bread-knife ; total value, £ls Is. 6d. Auckland. 27th September last, from the dwelling of NORA MARY BENJAMIN, Flat 19, St. George’s Flats, J|afnell, two strings of pearls, two brooches, pearl ear--rings, two dress rings, two neck-chains, a bangle, a cigarette-lighter, a pair of scissors, a fountain-pen, and Jour leather handbags (all recovered). Rings An 18 ct. gold—set with a large diamond in centre with smaller one on each side of it in straight platinum claw setting, largest diamond about J ct., value £6O ; an 18 ct. gold, set with a solitaire diamond (about -l ct.) in platinum claw setting, value £2O ; an 18 ct. gold, set with a cluster of seven diamonds in gold millegrain setting, value £6O ; gold, set with a cluster of seven or eight diamonds in claw setting, value £35 ; a ladies’ gold signet with “ A.R.8.” thereon ; a ladies’ gold signet; a gentlemen’s 18 ct. gold signet with “A.R.8.” thereon. Brooches An old slightly curved gold bar, about -j in. wide, set with two rows of pearls and also a pearl at each end ; a silver, in shape of. fan, about 3 in. wide at top, set with-green stones similar to emeralds, safety-pin fastener ; a white composition cameo with flowers around it, safety-pin fastener; a gold, of safety-pin type with scroll work and green enamel leaf in centre ; a gold bar, set with a sapphire, safety-type fastener; an 18 ct. gold, about 2 in. long and 4 in. wide, “ Jack ”on it, safety-pin fastener. Miscellaneous —-A silver cigarette-case with blue enamel lines, 3 in. by 2 in., “ Rowly to Johnnie ” on inside ; an ivory foot-rule pf folding type with brass hinges ; a ladies’ gold round wristlet watch, about size of a shilling, white dial’ with “ Baume Longines ” thereon, may have repair No. W 7899 scratched on inside back, black ribbon wrist-band ; a ladies’ gold Omega wristlet watch, about size of a shilling, white dial, black numerals, may have repair No. WBOIS scratched on inside back; a silver-plated jewel-box with Buddha on lid, about 4 in. by 3 in. by 2 in., hinged lid ; a gold scroll pendant with pearl drop and fiery opal suspended therefrom ; a gold pendant, set with aquamarine and pearls ; . portion of a gold oval bangle, set with a large amethyst in centre with about five smaller amethysts graduating from each side of it; a pair of 9 ct. gold ear-rings for pierced ears, set with amethysts which are slightly larger than a pea, in claw setting ; a 15 ct. gold oval locket about 1 in. wide at centre and about 1 J in. long, harp and three graduated emeralds inside wreath of leaves on front; a gold propelling pencil with pocket-clip; a navyblue composition propelling pencil with “ Kelly, Tailor, Whangarei ” thereon ; and about £6 in money ; total value, £361 10s. Mostly identifiable. The offence may have been committed by Thomas_Wi|fiam James, referred to in Police Gazette, 1944, page 873, and Photographs, 1940, page 96, who was arrested for theft by the Auckland Police on 7th October last, but he escaped from the police lock-up on 18th October last. Some of the recovered property was found in a gully at the tear of complainant’s dwelling, some was recovered from James’s room, and the remainder from a suit-case which had been left at the Atta Taxi Parcel Depot on 28th September last. James admitted leaving the suitcase at the parcel office, but stated that it had been given to him by m seaman whom he, did noLknow. t / / Xu /tU/S'&y Auckland. —12th or 13th October last, from the dwelling of MARGARET FREY, 97 Market Road, Epsom, a 1 pigskin handbag, an Auckland Savings-bank book, and four keys (recovered); a black Pelikan fountain-pen with gold bands ; a nickel-plated Ronson cigarette-lighter; a blue plastic transparent cigarette-case, holds twenty cigarettes ; a square black and gold coloured powder-box ; a small black leather purse with flap ; a pair of sun-glasses, dark-brown frame, green lenses; a pair of glasses with light-pink frame in brown case which has the name of an Austrian optician on inside; and about £3 7s. in money; total value, £lB 2s. 6d. Identifiable except money. Walter Hunter, referred to in Police Gazette, 1944, page 859, and Photographs, 1927, page 42, has been interviewed regarding this offence, but no evidence resulted. On 23rd ultimo, the handbag, bankbook, and keys were found in the Epsom Girls’ Grammar School grounds.

Auckland. —24th ultimo, the property of ETHEL MAUD BEKKER, 31 Edinburgh Street, Newton, a rust-coloured suede purse, about 7 in. by 4 in., envelope type with dome fastener, containing £225 10s. in money, made up of sixteen £lO, twelve £5, and five £1 notes, and a 10s. note. The following are the numbers of the. £lO notes: O-F 336951, O-F 045701, O-F 249439, O-F 309470, O-F 350457, O-F 244520, O-F 326573, O-F 288628, O-F 350111, O-F 350112, O-F 023401, O-F 174673, O-F 011844, O-F 133735, O-F 350113, and O-F 118580. The following are the numbers of some of the £5 notes : 4X071569,4X001035, 1X068174, 3X700271, 3X685838, 4X121306, 2X169607, 4X048234, 2X479889, and 3X700270. On above date complainant lost her purse while attending the Salvation Army jumble sale at the Samaritan Office, Grey’s Avenue.

Newton. —2nd and 3rd ultimo, from the shop of WILLIAM ALLEN BEGG, 61 Pitt Street, Newton, a pair of gentlemen’s light-grey sports trousers ; four pairs of gentlemen’s grey flannel sports trousers; a pair of gentlemen’s heavy serge trousers ; and a pair of gentlemen’s saddle tweed trousers; total value, £ls 17s. 6d. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by a Man (name unknown), age about twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 7 in., probably a seaman, medium build, dark complexion and hair; wearing blue dungaree trousers and dirty , dark shirt. He was seen loitering near the shop on above dates.

Mount Maunganui. — the 16th February, 1943, and Bth ultimo, from aircraft at R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Tauranga, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Air Department), an Elgin aircraft clock, dark metal case, 2 j in. in diameter with four screw-holes, made by Pioneer Instrument Co., luminous dial, numerals 3,6, 9, and 12 with remaining numerals indicated by dots, seconds-hand, winder at bottom', crown above “ A.M.” on back; and two Smith eight-day aircraft clocks, dark metal cases, luminous dials, seconds-hands, numerals 3,6, 9, and 12, with remaining numerals indicated by dots, winders at bottom, crown above “ A.M.” on backs ; total value, £2l 2s. Identifiable.

Opotiki. —The property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), a -303 calibre Lee-Enfield rifle, body Nos. 2999 and 694, barrel No. 5118 A.; value, £4. Identifiable. On 16th May, 1941, the rifle was impressed for the use of Home Guardsmen, but it cannot now be found.

Opotiki. The property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Army Department), a -303 calibre Lee-Enfield rifle, No. 647, body, bolt, and barrel No. 6754; value, £5. Identifiable. ! On 21st May, 1941, the rifle was impressed for the use of Home Guardsmen, but it cannot now be found.

Napier.— September last, from a room at 46 Carlyle Street, the property of MICHAEL JOSEPH CLEARY, a gentlemen’s double-breasted light-grey tweed overcoat, about size 6, plaid lining, collar slightly moth-eaten; value, £7. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by —. Brosnahan, age about sixty, height about 5 ft. 10j in., thin build, walks with a limp. On above date he booked in at above address and was allotted a bed in complainant’s room. He was seen leaving shortly after, carrying an overcoat. An old overcoat was left in place of the one stolen.

Wellington. Between the 18th and 21st August last, from the dwelling of DAVID ALLEN KENSINGTON SAVAGE, 20 Mariri Road, Kelburn, a gold (probably 18 ct.) ring, set with a diamond, which is slightly discoloured, in gold or platinum setting; value £2O; a gold ring, set with five diamonds of equal size in platinum claw setting, value £35 ; a double string of Richelieu pearls with silver oblong filigree clasp; a silver brooch in design of three leaves, one above the other with tips pointing downwards, originally set with pearl in each tip, but bottom pearl is now missing ; a pair of pink mottled enamel ear-rings with copper backs, screw-fasteners ; a pair of long black enamel screw-on earrings ; two gold dress studs ; a pale-blue machine-knitted twin set, Glamis brand on and fancy work around neck, S.W. size ; a gentlemen’s hand-knitted sleeveless pullover of blue heather mixture ; and a gentlemen’s grey machineknitted cardigan with paint-spots on it; total value, £6B 15s. Identifiable except studs.

Wellington. —Between the 29th September last and 2nd October, from the workshops, Hinemoa Street, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Public Works Department), a Black and Decker portable heavy-duty electric drill, -f in. chuck, two side handles, breast-plate missing ; value, £35. Identifiable.

Christchurch. — 30th September last, from the dwelling of RALPH PARKES HUNTER, 30 Randolph Street, Shirley, a gentlemen’s silver 7-jewel Swiss pocket watch; a No. 2 Brownie folding camera ; a Rolls razor with chipped handle in blue case ; a Valet safety razor ; a Swift fountainpen ; a diamond pendant, set with a pink-coloured stone in centre with gold fine chain about 15 in. long attached ; six gold old brooches, one with small pearls inset in shape of letter “ M,” one of wishbone shape, and one with representation of bunch of grapes at each end ; a gold bangle, set with an amethyst; a fine double watch-chain, about 20 in. long ; a gold locket with black front, set with smalk. black and white pearls in shape of cross; a leather wallet of folding type ; a khaki canvas knapsack, about 18 in. by 12 in. ; a gentlemen’s navy-blue suit of herringbone pattern, size 6, Plimsolls make; two coloured cotton singlebed quilts ; seven £1 Liberty Bonds ; and £3 10s. in money ; total value, £Bl 19s. 6d. Identifiable except money and bonds.

Christchurch. Between the 21st and 23rd October last, the dwelling of JOHN WILLIAM SHARP, 121 Glandovey Road, was broken into and the following stolen: a 9 ct. gold full-length curb watch-chain, weight about 1 oz., gold sovereign dated “ 1903 ” attached ; value, £ls. Identifiable.

Dunedin. —16th October last, from the dwelling of VIOLET MARY HOSKIN, 19 Pretoria Road, St. Clair, a gold ring, originally set with a cluster of nine diamonds but three are now missing, centre diamond larger than others, “To Violet from Cecil, 1923 on inside band; value,'£2o. Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by a Man (name unknown), age about eighteen, height about 5 ft. 5 in., good, build, fresh complexion, wavy fair hair, round features, broad forehead, speaks quietly ; well dressed in a tweed coat with flecks, and grey trousers (no hat). He was seen in the vicinity about the time the offence was committed.

Dunedin. — 19th or 20th October last, from the workshop of the Dunedin Engineering Co., the property of THOMAS JAMES FREDERICK WILLIAMS, Portobello, a gentlemen’s silver 13 ligne Record wristlet watch, No. 34648, luminous hands and Arabic numerals, “ To Tiny from Rita, 1944” on outside back case; and a combination square steel rule, 12 in. long, groove in centre from which two adjustable arms project ; total value, £5 15s.
