PROPERTY STOLEN.
Whangarei. —Between the 10th and 28th July last, from a launch, the property of JOHN COUTTS REYNOLDS, Sea View Road, a -22 calibre single-shot model B. Savage rifle, No. 2079 ; a pair of prismatic binoculars with black leather covering about 5 in. long, black composition eyepieces one of which is loose; a sheath knife; and three cushions ; total value, £l2 14s. Identifiable.
Auckland. —29th August last, from Princes Wharf, the property of the UNION STEAM SHIP CO., a box marked “F. P., Dunedin,” containing seventy-two open-face chromium-plated Westclox watches, black dials with luminous Arabic numerals, “ Westclox Dax, Made in Canada ” on dials; value, £52 4s. Not identifiable.
Auckland. —Between the Ist July and 26th August last, from a cave on the farm of Mr. Owen Self, the property of HAROLD EDWIN DAY, 4 Wallace Road, Papatoctoe, a Hermes portable typewriter, No. 89733; value £lO 10s. Identifiable. Complainant had the typewriter, together with a duplicator and some Communistic literature, in the cave referred to, and later when the duplicator and literature were taken possession of by the police it was discovered that the typewriter had been stolen. It may still be in possession of the Communist Party.
Auckland. — 17th ultimo, from the dwelling of CHRISTOPHER JOSEPH ROGERS, 194 Remuera Road, a gentlemen’s 18 ct. gold round open-face Swiss wristlet-watch, diameter about same as half-a-crown, No. 315873, “ C.J.R.” and “ G.F.R.” on outside back case, Zenith screw, leather wrist-strap, value £25; 12s. in silver; about twenty coins of Italian, East Africa, South Africa, and French denominations ; and an Indian rupee ; total value, £25 12s. Watch identifiable.
Kerepeiii. —During the night of 22nd ultimo, from the cowshed of RONALD WILLIAM CAMPBELL, Waitakaruru, a 1935 model five-valve Skyscraper Junior radio set, serial No. 22884, electric bulb in dial missing; value, £5. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Henry Paul, age about twenty-nine, height 5 ft. 9 in., labourer, Maori, medium build, copper complexion, black hair, brown eyes; dressed in a navy-blue suit and black shoes (no hat); insolent manner. He assisted complainant in the milking-shed, and he has been interviewed, but no evidence resulted.
Paeroa. Between the 26th June and 26th July last, from the dwelling of RONALD STUART NICOL, a gold engagement ring, set with two large diamonds in centre with three smaller diamonds on each side of them in platinum setting ; value, £25. Identifiable.
Hamilton.— 2lst September last, from a dance-hall in Alexander Street, the property of REGINALD CLIFFORD DREW, Raynor’s Road, Huntly, a gentlemen’s doublebreasted Roslyn overcoat of fawn Donegal tweed with red thread through material, lined with art silk, “ R. C. Drew ” in ink on inside of one pocket; value, £7 15s. Identifiable.
Hamilton. 23rd July last, the property of JEAN WILLIAMS, 68 Collingwood Street, a ladies’ gold diamondshaped Peake wristlet watch, No. 70016, Arabic numerals, “J. W., 26/6/36” engraved on back; value, £l4. Identifiable.
Hamilton.— 2oth ultimo, the property of ANDREW GILBRIDE McHUGH, senior sergeant, Police-station, Hamilton, a brown pocket wallet, about 5 in. by 4 in., containing £3 10s. in notes; a money-order for £1 11s. 3d.,issued at Auckland in favour of A. G. McHugh ; a police first-class railway pass, No. 35; a police identification card in name Senior Sergeant McHugh ; and several letters and art union tickets ; total value, £7 ss. Identifiable. Complainant lost his wallet at the G.P.0., Auckland, and a Man of the following description was seen to pick it up and walk away with it: Age about forty-five, height about 5 ft. 7 in.; medium build ; appeared to be well dressed, and wore a grey raincoat.
Hamilton. Between the 7th and 9th and the 14th and 16th September last, from a show-case in the front of the shop of HERBERT BENJAMIN HILL, 73 Victoria Street, twelve 9 ct. gold signet rings of various shapes, Hill make ; a stainless steel double-bladed fruit-knife, 21- in. pearl handle with small silver shield thereon; a chromium cigarettecase, engine turned, 3 in. by 2\ in., shaped to fit pocket, \ in. by j in. engraving space; two gilt military badges, “Onward” over “ N.Z.” on two fern leaves in form of circle; seven gilt N.Z. military badges of fern-leaf design ; three gilt Maori tiki brooches ; three fountain-pens, Swan and Waterman make, 14 ct. gold nibs; and a 9 ct. gold round locket with ruby in centre in star setting, about size of a halfpenny ; total value, £lO Is. Rings only identifiable.
Matamata. —23rd or 24th ultimo, the property of TREVOR MURROW HOPKINS, farmer, Te Poi, a wallet; and £9 in money. Suspicion is attached to Dane William Sherwccd, referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 839, who had assumed the name Gene Pain. He was employed by complainant, but he disappeared on the 23rd ultimo, and the following day Mr. Hopkins discovered that the wallet and money had been stolen. The property (except the socks) referred to in Police Gazette, 1940, page 839, as having been stolen from TREVOR DOUGLAS HERBERT has been recovered by the Matamata police.
Hastings. —During the night of 21st ultimo, from the vestibule of the post-office, the property of the NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT (Post and Telegraph Department), an oak stamp-vending machine containing money and penny stamps to the value of £3 15s. 3d. ; total value, £8 15s. 3d. Machine identifiable.
Waipukurau. — lltli ultimo, from a room in the Pukeora Sanatorium, the property of MAUREEN FAHEY, nurse, a gentlemen’s rolled-gold cushion-shaped Titan wristlet watch, No. 67, luminous dial, “ M.F.” on back case, repair No. ElOOl on inside case, rolled-gold bracelet of link pattern; value, £7 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to Monica Edna Gann, known as Pat Cann, age twenty-eight, height 5 ft. 6 in., nursing aid, native of New Zealand, slight build, fair clear complexion, frizzy brown hair, brown eyes, small nose, wears dark horn-rimmed glasses. She was employed at the sanatorium, and was heard near complainant’s room, and she has been interviewed, but no evidence resulted.
Palmerston North. —3rd ultimo, from a lorry in King Street, the property of OLIVER HENRY VIVIAN, 64 Roy Street, a jacket containing a gentlemen’s silver Stewart Dawson English lever Railway pocket watch, Roman numerals, “2nd Nov., 1931, Dad” inscribed on back, “ C. 105 ” scratched on inside of case, slight chip off edge of glass; and a light silver double-link watch-chain with silver Maltese cross medallion with “ 0.H.V.” on it attached ; total value, £7 Is. Identifiable.
Wellington. — September last, from a room in the staff quarters of the New Commercial Hotel, Lambton Quay, the property of MONA McAUSLIN, a dark-brown musquash fur coat with brown silk lining, “ Milne and Choyce ” on tag, small pocket on inside, tear in right elbow, knee-length, and fit woman 5 ft. 7 in. of medium build ; and a pair of ladies’ black court shoes, peeper toes, half suede and half patent, size 4or 5 ; total value, £4O 10s. Identifiable.
Wellington. — On the 14th August last, the dwelling of ANNIE DORIS GRIGG, 1 Mallam Street, Karori, was broken into and the following stolen : £9 12s. in money; a gold ring, originally set with three diamonds in crossover setting, but a diamond at one end is now missing; and a gold band ring, set with five dark-blue sapphires in straight claw setting; total value, £25 12s. Identifiable except money.
Wellington.— During the night of 20th August last, the offices of TRUTH (N.Z.), LTD., Wakefield Street, were broken into and the following stolen : £lO6 10s. 3d. in money; a money-order for £1 2s. 6d., No. 71053, dated 20th August, 1940; a money-order for £1 2s. 6d., No. 71052, dated 20th August, 1940; two cheques drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Wellington, by S. Wyatt, one for £7 6s. 6d., and the other for £l2 4s. 6d.; a cheque for £l2 os. 6d., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Petone, by C. G. Hawken; a cheque for £5 163. 6d., drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Petone, by W. M. Morris ; a cheque for £1 9s. 3d., drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Lower Hutt, by W. R. Surgenor; a cheque for £7 13s. 9d., drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Lower Hutt, by L. Player (all cheques in favour of “ Truth (N.Z.), Ltd.”); two safe keys; and a holder with Black and White whisky advertisement on it containing about twelve keys of various types, “ K. Mason, 55 or 64 Tasman Street, Wellington,” on piece of cardboard attached ; total value, £155 63. 3d. Identifiable except money.
Wellington.— Between the Ist and 28th August last, from a dwelling at 26 Rex Street, Miramar, the property of HENRIETTA GILLESPIE, 90 Hobson Street, a casketshaped jewel-box, 4£ in. by 3 in. by in., of greyish colour and lined with grey velvet; a gentlemen’s gold open-face pocket watch, Arabic numerals, loose glass, two hundred years old, case worn very thin; a ladies’ gold open-face fob watch, chased case. Arabic numerals; a gold shield tiepin, set with small diamond chip in centre; a gold nugget tie-pin, nugget of light colour and in rough state ; an 18 et. gold broad band wedding ring; a gold ring, set with three diamonds on each side of which is a pearl; a gold round sovereign-case with gold cable chain attached ; a gold-mounted Scotch pebble; and a silver miniature trinket in shape of alarm clock; total value, £37 15s. Identifiable.
Wellington. the 31st May and 4th June last, from a room in the Wellington Public Hospital, the property of DR. GAVIN H ANN AY FORREST, a £lO note; a£s note, No. 173702; four £1 notes; and a 10s. note. Suspicion is attached to Sally Mardell, alias Joyce Thelma Day, age eighteen, height 5 ft. 5 in., housemaid, medium build, fresh complexion, fair hair, blue eyes, medium nose inclined to be flat; may be wearing a rose-coloured woollen frock with hat to match, and a red tartan overcoat. She was employed at the hospital, and had an opportunity to commit the offence. On the 6th June last she was interviewed by the police, but no evidence resulted. She is also suspected of having stolen from MOIRA WALKER (with whom she shared a room), 3 John Street, a brown fibrecane suit-case and a Londan-tan tweed overcoat; total value, £3 17s. 6d. Christchurch. —23rd September last, from a locker at the Municipal Baths, Manchester Street, the property of JACK B REWARD, 102 Monck’s Spur, Redcliffs, a gentlemen’s rolled-gold Omega luminous wristlet watch with rolled-gold wrist-band, white enamel dial, 26-5 model; value, £lO. Identifiable.
Christchurch. l9th September last, from a Chinese boardinghouse at 165 Madras Street, the property of HARRY KWOK, a pair of aluminium alloy Zeiss Deltrintem model binoculars, marked 8x 30 or 8x32 ; a gentlemen’s doublebreasted grey check tweed overcoat, made by Angus, tailor, Christchurch, fit man of 5 ft. 6 in.; and a gentlemen’s air-force-blue felt hat, size 6|-; total value, £3l 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to a Man (name unknown), age about forty-seven, height about 5 ft. 6 in., medium build, He was seen leaving the boardinghouse with an overcoat.
Christchurch. —Between the 28th April and 2nd May last, from the dwelling of SOPHROMIA THELMA PEARL ALEXANDER, 109 Paverill Street, an 18 ct. gold engagement ring, set with a round cluster of twenty-five small diamonds in platinum setting, gold worn through on one side of cluster; and a gold engagement ring with three diamonds set diagonally in claw setting, gold filigree around diamonds ; total value, £4O. Identifiable.
Christchurch. — 10th May last, from the dwelling of EDITH CLAUDE, 28 Mayfield Avenue, an 18 ct. gold engagement ring, set with a square cluster of nine diamonds in platinum setting; and an 18 ct. gold wedding ring, diamond-shaped patterns engraved on it; total value, £22. Identifiable.
Christchurch.— l6th ultimo, from the warehouse of lAN R. LITTLE AND CO., 96 Hereford Street, a black Prism Monocular, 8 magnification, about 5 in. long, may have maker’s name “ Broadhurst and Clarkson, Ltd., 63 Farrington Road, London ”on it; value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion is attached to a Youth (name unknown), age about seventeen, height about 5 ft. 9 in., medium build, fresh complexion, bushy fair hair, prominent teeth ; wearing a blue sports coat and grey trousers with a blue tinge in them. He called at the warehouse and inquired about the purchase of a camera. When he was leaving it was noticed that he had something bulky in his pocket.
Dunedin.— Between the 27th September last and 6th ultimo, from the dwelling of ELIZA JANE lIEALD, 518 Macandrew Road, about £4 in silver; and a gentlemen’s gold watch-chain, links about 1 in. long joined with small round links, each large link stamped “ 18 ct,” similar to illustration No. 12 in Police Gazette, 1911, page 2 ; total value, £9. Chain identifiable.
Dunedin.— During the night of 19th August last, the warehouse of ALLEN, SON, AND McCLURE, 7 King Street, was broken into and the following stolen: A gentlemen’s companion set contained in imitation crocodile leather with zip-fastener, bottle of Cosmetex perfume, and some gift cartons made by Cosmetex (N.Z.), Ltd., Auckland, containing shaving-cream, brilliantine, soap, powder, and perfume, cartons marked “ Cosmogene and Perfect ” ; a gentlemen’s metal open-face watch, Arabic numerals, “ Jupiter ”or “ Cortebert ”on dial; a chromium bedroom clock, Arabic numerals, “ Foreign ”on dial; a tan suit-case, about 24 in. by 10 in.; and 15s Bd. in money ; total value, £6 15s. Watch only identifiable.
Dunedin. September last, from a room in the Criterion Hotel, the property of ERIC DARCY SINCLAIR, 17 Lonsdale Crescent, Rongotai, Wellington, a brown composition suit-case, about 22 in. by 14 in., containing a darkbrown suit, made by Public Service Tailors, Wellington, fit man about 5 ft. 7 in. of slight build ; a brown tie ; a pair of brown leather slippers, size 7 ; a brown striped shirt with collars to match, size 15 in. neck ; two pairs of white underpants ; a Gillette safety razor; a shaving-stick in brown composition container; some handkerchiefs ; and a set of mauve striped pyjamas ; total value, £l2 4s. 6d. Identifiable.
