Queen Street Whare (Auckland). —4th July last, on warrant for making a false declaration, Francis Walter Seymour, age fifty-five, height 5 ft. 7 in., labourer, native of England, medium build, swarthy complexion, grey hair, blue-grey eyes, dirty teeth. The charge to be preferred against him reads : “ On the 4th day of July, 1938, at Auckland did make a false representation for the purpose of procuring for himself a certificate of competency, to wit, a renewal of a chief engineer’s certificate, by falsely stating in a declaration made on oath before James MacDonald, a Justice of the Peace, that he was the holder of a chief engineer’s certificate, No. 14106, which had been destroyed by fire at Wellington in 1935.” He stated his intention to leave the Dominion.^^ J

Auckland. Lena Sterio, alias May Smith, suspected of theft, left for Sydney (Australia) on the 24th June last. (See Police Gazette, 1938, page 535.)

Auckland. 26th ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Auckland Prison for three months for being an idle and disorderly person, Iris Alma Long, referred to in Police Gazette, 1937, page 797. On the 30th October, 1937, she was sentenced to three months on the above-mentioned charge, but after serving six days she was released pending the result of appeal. The appeal was subsequently dismissed.

Waihi. —2sth ultimo, on warrant for false pretences, William John Marriott, age forty-seven, height 5 ft. 6| in., clerk and labourer, native of New Zealand, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair turning grey, brown eyes, cross and flags on, left forearm, leaves on right forearm ; usually dressed in a grey suit, grey felt hat, and tan shoes, and wears an R.S.A. badge; quiet manner ; fond of drink. Accused obtained an alarm clock; a blue Wonder razor; a pair of fencing pliers ; and 20 ft. bull-chain with snap hook : total value, £1 195., from the Waihi Hardware Co., by falsely representing that he had been instructed by his employer, William Muir, to obtain them. Wellington.23rd September last, on warrant for theft of a pair of trousers (recovered), value, £1 15., the property of George Harrison, Ltd., Lambton Quay, David James Cromie, alias Daniel Joesph Cromie, age forty-six, height 5 ft. 2f in., labourer and steward, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, blue eyes, scar on right forearm and upper arm, on right leg, and on body ; fond of drink. Accused, who called at the complainant’s shop for his suit-case which he had previously left there, stole a pair of trousers which he pawned for 7s. 6d. Wellington. — James Arthur Nickless, alias “ Snowy ” Nickless, failing to maintain, is now living at 214 Glenmore Road, Paddington, Sydney, Australia. He has assumed the name J. Mason. (See Police Gazette, 1938, page 676.)

Wharf (Wellington). —7th instant, on warrant for being absent from the ship “ Tolten ” without leave(l) John H. Banks, age twenty-two, height 5 ft. 10 in., seaman, native of England, medium build, dark complexion and hair, flat feet. (2) James Lyons, age twenty-four, height 5 ft. 6 in., seaman, native of England, medium build, fresh complexion, wavy fair hair, blue eyes.

Greymouth. —3rd instant, on warrant for a breach of his probation (Crimes Amendment Act, 1910), Herbert Helm, alias Eric Curnow, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 439, and Photographs, 1918, page 43. He is an habitual criminal, and he has failed to report. , j* s /

Mosgiel. 3lst ultimo, on warrant of commitment to Dunedin Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £l2 fine and costs for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-cycle, Albert James Holderness, referred to in Police Gazette, 1938, page 530. He may be using without a driver’s license a B.S.A. motor-cycle, No. 15-238. . .

Bluff. —7th instant, on warrant of commitment to Invercargill Prison for fourteen days in default of paying £1 fine and costs for being found on licensed premises during prohibited hours, Timothy JosS, age thirty- height 6 ft., labourer and seaman, native of New Zealand, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, right thumb missing, scar on right side of face, on back of left hand, and on left leg, “ Mother,” flower, and anchor on left forearm.
