Burglary, Breaking and Entering, Theft from Dwellings, Shops, &c.

Auckland.— Frank Kelly, agent, reports stolen from E. Martin’s house, Upper Queen Street, on the 28th August last, a brown-leather portmanteau, about 28 in. by 14 in. by 12 in.; value, 10s. Identifiable.

Dargaville. Edwin Harding, farmer, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the Ist and 17th August last, a pale-blue Japanese mantle-drape, a table-centre with yellow-and-green ribbon and cream lace, two children’s blue-and-white sateen dresses, and two red-coral necklaces; value, £2 3s. 6d.

Dannevirke. —George Knopp, Westport, hawking-jeweller, Westport, reports stolen from his box in the Railway Hotel, on the 11th ultimo, an 18-carat gold ring with one diamond in claw setting ; value, £lO. Identifiable.

Marton. — Frederick Danderson and man, name unknown, are charged on warrant with breaking and entering the dwelling of Thomas Signal, on the 13th ultimo, and stealing therefrom a silver brooch, a gold ring with “ Good Luck ” on it, a gold ring with fancy-work round it, and a pair of boar’s tusks, one thinner than the other ; value, £3. Descriptions : First —A native of New Zealand, saddler, twenty-three years of age, 5 ft. BJin, high, pale complexion, dark-brown hair, hazel eyes, pointed nose (see Police Gazette, 1901, page 228). Second —About twenty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 7in. or Sin. high, slim build, sandy complextion, small reddish moustache only, slovenly dress. Supposed to have been employed about six years ago at Wanganui carting fish. Both offenders are fond of drink.

Wellington South. —Thomas Gloster, Edward Osborne, and Leslie Biggins, milkmen, Angus Avenue, report stolen from their dwellings, on the sbh ultimo, a pair of blue-vicuna trouser?, size 5, “ Osborne and Baker ” on the buttons ; a gentlemen’s very old silver lever hunting-watch, “William Cook, Hobart Town, 1851'’ (or 1852), engraved on plate, a silver neck-chain with very small links attached, the property of T. Gloster, value £1 10s. ; and £4 in money. Seven sovereigns, the property of E. Osborne. Seven shillings in silver, a halfpenny (date supposed 1704), a copper coin with “First Prize to be collected at Sydney” stamped on back, the property of L. Biggins.

Rakaia. —C. Hardy and Co. report that on the 23rd or 24th ultimo an attempt was made to break into their store. Suspicion attached to two men. First Wheeler, supposed native of New Zealand, about twenty-six years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, slight build, fair complexion, fair hair, cleanshaved except fair moustache ; dressed in grey-tweed suit and grey soft-felt hat. Second - Name unknown, supposed native of New Zealand, about twenty-five years of age, 5 ft. 10in. high, medium build, full face, pale complexion, dark hair, small dark moustache only; dressed in dark clothes and grey-tweed cap.

Little River. —Sidney Buckland Harris, storekeeper, reports that on the 25th or 26th ultimo his store was broken into, and the following stolen : Twelve ladies’ and twenty-two gentlemen’s Water bury watches ; two nickel-silver watches; one red-brier pipe with bent stem and amber mouthpiece, silver-mounted; 51b. Ruby tobacco; twelve packets cigarettes ; and about £1 in silver, consisting of sixpenny and threepenny pieces: total value, £3O 4s. Suspicion attached to George Crowther and Charles L. O'Toole. Descriptions : First —A native of Napier, half-caste Maori, sixteen years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, stout square build, dark complexion, and dark curly hair ; dressed in dungaree trousers, dark coat and vest, and dark skull-cap. Second—A native of the Thames, sixteen years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, stout square build, fair complexion and hair ; dressed in beaver trousers, dungaree coat, lace-up boots, and dark skull-cap. Both boys escaped from Burnham Industrial School.

Dunedin. —John Brennan, clerk, Anderson’s Bay, reports stolen from the Cafe Cecil, Princes Street, on the 23rd ultimo, a gentlemen’s Stearns bicycle, No. 67217, black frame, yellow rims, reversible handles ; value, £B. Identifiable.
