Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.
Auckland. —Henry Burrage and Richard Poole, carpenters, report that on the 9th or 10th ultimo W. E. Hutchison’s workshop, Hobson Street, was broken into and the following stolen : A set of double outter-bits, four counter-sinks and centre-bits, an expansion-bit, two cutters, a compass-plane branded “ T. May,” and a dovetail-saw with brass back, the property of Harry Burrage; value, £1 17s. 6d. Identifiable. A new smoothing-plane and a badger-plane branded “R. Poole,” the property of Richard Poole; value, 14s. 6d. Identifiable.
Auckland.— David Gouk, contractor, Custom Street, reports stolen from his shed, between the 6th and 10th ultimo, a screw-jack, medium size, “ D. Gouk” branded on stalk; value, £6. Identifiable.
Kawakawa.-— Robert Forsythe, labourer, reports stolen from off his horse at the Towai Hotel, on the 26th May last, a gentlemen's saddle, with nickel-silver stirrup-irons, and a gentlemen’s riding oilskin overcoat, small tear in back; value, £4 Bs. Identifiable.
Te Aroha.— Rengarenga Hotene is charged on warrant with theft, on the 4th May last, of a £5 note (recovered), the property of Tohi Tewinui, labourer, Morrinsville. Description : A Native of New Zealand, about twenty-five years of age ; about 5 ft. 9 in. or 10 in. high, slight dark moustache only, slight build, stooping gait, consumptive appearance, face rather narrow and light-coloured for a Maori, prominent gums; speaks English fairly well, very plausible manner.
Ngaruawahia.— Robert Ibell is charged on warrant with theft, about the 6th ultimo, of a dark-brown check waterproof coat, and a Gladstone bag containing a blacktweed suit, a dark-green tweed coat and vest, some linen collars and neckties, and a clothes-brush the property of Henry Graham: value, £lO 15s. Identifiable. Offender is about twenty-four years of age, a labourer, about 5 ft. 6 in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, brown hair, dark moustache only, round features ; dressed in brown-tweed coat, blue-serge trousers, a white cotton shirt, and darktweed cap. He obtained the above goods from the Thames Hotel, Auckland, on an order from the complainant, but failed to forward them. Supposed identical with Robert Ibell, alias Snell. (See Police Gazette, 1902, pages 128 and 140).
Napier. Mrs. Annie Gallien, Taradale, reports stolen from her trap in Stewart’s Stables, on the 31st May last, a blue rug with large red and brown check running through it, fringe at each end ; value, £l. Identifiable.
Napier. —Mrs. Alice Husband, Page’s Road, Timaru, reports stolen from the s.s. “ Zealandia,” between Auckland and Gisborne, on the 11th ultimo, an antique bracelet of black enamel, about Jin. deep, made in two parts, joined with elastic, thin gold plate on outside of enamel; value, 10s.
Stratford. —Leslie George Gilbert, jeweller, reports that on the 15th ultimo his shop was broken into and the following stolen: A gentlemen’s gold cable albert watch-chain, with large links; value, £5 5s ; a heavy silver hunting Rotherham watch, No. 169096 (ehastd), “ L. G. Gilbert ” on the face; value, £6 10s. Watch only identifiable. Suspicion attached to Joseph Reynolds. Description : A native of England, a painter, twenty-one years of age, 5 ft. s|in. high, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes; dressed in black trousers, fawn overcoat, and black and white check cap. Henry Rose, alias Ernest Maltravers, alias Joseph Wilson, is also suspected as being an accomplice. He is now going under the name of Johnston, and is selling cleaning-ing-polish and looking for work as a painter. Wanganui. —Bertie William Willis, printer, reports stolen from his shop-door, on the 21st ultimo, a gentlemen’s Rambler bicycle, No. 34705, dropped handles, wooden rims, model 32, American saddle, 24 in. frame, bell on left handle, top bar slightly dented, about 80-gear, acetylene-gas lamp on right side of axle ; no brake or mud-guards ; value, £2O. Identifiable.
Feilding. — Thomas Henry Shafto is charged on warrant with theft, on the 13th ultimo., of £1 Is., the money of Albert John Gould, baker, Feilding. Description : Colonial, twenty one years of age, 6 ft. high, slight build, fair complexion, fair hair inclined to curl, slight fair moustache, small face, blue eyes, rather weak knees and long feet; dressed in black sac suit, bluish-grey Chesterfield coat with blue-velvet collar, tan lace-up boots, white straw hat and umbrella ; very respectable appearance. He was employed by the complainant as driver and to collect accounts. He received the above amount and appropriated it to his own use.
Wellington. —William Thirkell, Government Printing Office, reports stolen from Roseneath School-house, on the 6th May last, a Chesterfield overcoat (recovered); value, £2 ss. The coat waR pawned at Barsht’s, Newtown, by a man who gave the name of J. Gould. Description: About twenty-four years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, well-built, brown hair, fresh complexion, clean shaved, three small moles on left cheek ; dressed in blue or black vicuna suit, black hard hat, stand-up collar, and plaid tie, respectable appear ance. In the pocket of the stolen coat a pawn-ticket was found issued to offender by John Griffiths, on the 3rd May last, for a silver hunting lever watch, No 76329 ; maker, “ Hislop and Co., Wellington,” which probably has been stolen.
Wellington. —Percy William Pollock, groom, reports stolen from his room in Dr. Mackin’s stable, on the 14th ultimo, an 18-carat gold band ring, set with sapphire ; a 15-carat gold pin, knob with bell hanging therefrom ; a goldwire pin, letter P; and 15s: total value, £2 19s. Identification doubtful. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was seen in the stable. Description : About thirty-five years of age, about 5 ft. 7 in. high, stout build, clean-shaved, dark hair, red face; was wearing an old dark mackintosh and dirty-brown Alpine hat. Identifiable.
Manners Street (Wellington).— Matthew Henry Biggs, contractor, 7, Hopper Street, reports stolen from the porch of the Church of Christ, Taranaki Place, on the 22nd ultimo., a gentlemen’s large black new umbrella, with L-shaped handle, “H. 8.” roughly cut in it; value, 10s. 6d. Identifiable.
Christchurch. —The Direct Importing Company report stolen from Heywood and Co. or the Colonial Carrying Company, in transit to Nelson, between the 14th and 17th May last, a ladies’ long dark-fawn cloth coat, with velvet collar and fancy buttons about the size of a half-crown; value, £6 6s. Identifiable.
Christchurch.— Frederick Holland, farmer, Greendale, reports stolen, between the Ist and 3rd May last, a draught horse-collar, one side of lining torn, “ F.H.” on off side, also a pair of hames ; value, £l. Identifiable.
Christchurch. —Frederick Waymouth, Fairfield Freezingworks, reports stolen from a right-of-way near the freezingworks, on the 13th ultimo, a gentlemen’s American bicycle, black enamelled frame, wood rim on front wheel, steel rim on back wheel, rat-trap pedals; value, £5. Identifiable.
Christchurch.— Edward McCann, labourer, Upper Riccarton, reports stolen from outside the Bush Inn Hotel, on the sth ultimo, a gentlemen’s special bicycle, No. 163, green-enamel frame with gold lines, dropped handles, a piccolo acetylene-gas lamp with the glass chipped, attached ; value, £lB 12s. 6d. Identifiable.
Oamaru. —Between the 30th May last and 2nd ultimo there was stolen from the Government Railway - station parcel-office, Oamaru, a brown-leather portmanteau containing a pair of tan boots, a pair of shoes, a white shirt, two linen collars size 15J, three woollen shirts, four flannels, three pairs of under-pants, a whip, a razor and shavingbrush, a purse, letters of reference, a glass box containing three ties ; also a sugar-bag containing a blue waterproof coat and a pair of long kangaroo leggings. Both packages were addressed 0. Foley, and probably had a left-luggage ticket on, No. 6727: total value, £8 17s.
Mornington (Dunedin). —Joseph Bartlet, bootmaker, reports that, on the 20th or 21st ultimo, his shop was broken into, and the following stolen: A pair of men’s tan shoes, size 8 ; a pair of men’s sewn lace-up boots, size 7; a pair of ladies’ elastic-side patent prunello golosh boots, size 4; a pair of ladies’ evening shoes, size 5; two pairs of girls’ chrome boots, sizes 1 and 12; an 1 about half a gross of mohair boo laces: value, £3.
