Horse- and Cattle-stealing.

Te Kuiti. —William Kilmartin, settler, reports stolen, about the Ist June, 1900, a light-bay gelding, about 14 hands high, four years old, Roman nose, white streak down nose, branded X on off rump; value, £4. Natives suspected of selling the horse to a half-oaste, James Roach, who took several lots of horses to Waitara and Hawera for sale.

Waiuku. —Maurioe Priestley reports stolen from a paddoob, on the 14th or 15th Deoember last, a chestnut mare, about 14 hands high, eight years old, star on forehead, white nose, shod all round, lighter colour on legs, branded S on near shoulder; value, £B.

New Plymouth. —Joseph Crocket, grain merchant, reports stolen from Newton King’s yard, Currie Street, in October, 1900, a dark-brown hack gelding, 14£ hands high, four years old, branded 5 supposed on near shoulder, a little white on off hind foot; a colonial saddle, and a double-rein bridle with snaffle-bit about two years in wear: value, £25.

Foxton. — William Tofts is charged on warrant with having, on the 25th December, 1900, stolen a horse, saddle, and bridle, the property of Frederick Spencer Easton. Offender is supposed colonial, a labourer, was blacksmithing in Wellington, twenty-eight years of age, about 5 ft. 4 in. high, stiff build, fresh complexion, shaved except small fair moustache, fair hair, very short open teeth ; was wearing a new pair of greyish saddle-tweed trousers, a blue or black coat, and a soft brown-felt hat with a very wide band. He left Foxton on the 25th, and offered the turn-out to Mr. Falkner for £4. Supposed gone to Palmerston North. The horse is a dark-bay gelding, branded □ on one shoulder, 14hands high, a lump on near fore-leg between the knee and fetlock; a rather large colonial saddle, lining broken underneath the pommel, flat knee-pads, one broken at the bottom, nickel stirrup-irons, one with three and the other with one centre bar; a bridle, brass buckles on headstall, square buckles on the reins, iron bit: value, £5.

Marton. —John Hammond, farmer, reports stolen, about the 28th October last, a dark-chestnut gelding, 14£ hands high, branded EB conjoined, looks like M, a small white streak down the face, a white saddle-mark on the off side of the wither and one under the saddle; value, £l7. Suspicion attached to Charles Hartley, who lives with the Maoris at Parewa, and may have sold the horse at Palmerston.

Rakaia. —William Cromie, blacksmith, reports stolen, on the 13th or 14th December last, a bay hack gelding, no brands, small lump on off fore pastern, slight scar on near hind hock, brushes with hind feet, white snib on nose ; value, £ls. Identifiable.

Winton. —Stephen Hunter, farmer, Benmore, reports supposed stolen, between the 17th October last and 20th ultimo, sixty full-fleeced ewes, 4 H on near side in red paint, ear-marked with swallow in near ear; forty of this season’s lambs, mixed sexes, cut and tailed, tip off and slit in near ear of ewes and off ear of wethers : value, £7O.
