Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Mangonui. Stolen from the cabin of the schooner “ Greyhound,” during the passage from 'Auckland to Mangonui, between the 6th and 9th September last, a gold bracelet with miniature padlock and chain, and a ladies’ gold keeper-ring with buckle, value £3 10s., the property of

Kathleen Shine, Awanui North ; and a gold brooch, about 2§ in. long, heart in centre, value £2 10s., the property of Mrs. H. Subritzky, Awanui. Suspicion attached to George White, who was cook and steward on the vessel, and is now living in Auckland.

Herbert and District Constable Rowe, on information obtained by the latter. Suspicion is therefore removed from George Duncan, mentioned in the above-quoted reference.

Auckland. —Walter Gerrard, joiner, reports stolen from Santford’s Fish-mart, on the 12th ultimo, a silver lever openfaced watch, No. 40179, maker Marsland, Stockport, covered with a yellow-horn case; silver chain-cable pattern, and silver locket, shaped like a heart, with horse-shoe and nail thereon, attached ; value, £4 17s. 6d. Suspicion attached to John Reness, a fishmonger, living in Auckland, about forty years of age, about 6 ft. 1 in. high, stout build, fair hair, fresh complexion, shaved except fair moustache.

Waitekauri. —Arthur Maurice, sawyer, reports stolen, between the 23rd November and 14th Deoember last, two pit-saws, maker Sorby, one 9 ft. long, plate new, the other 7 ft. 6 in. long, was formerly 9 ft., teeth go to tail end, narrow blade ; value, £3 Bs. Suspicion attached to John Davis (may assume the name of Dufcy), a half-caste negro, about twenty-two years of age, 5 ft. 10 in. or 11 in. high, stout build, round-shouldered, very dark complexion, black hair, clean-shaved ; dressed in a blue- or black-serge suit and light-felt hat. Supposed to have gone to Auckland.

Thames. —Donald James Milnes, tailor, reports that on the 12th or 13th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: Sixteen rolls of tweed (various patterns), identifiable by general appearance; twelve white tennisshirts, and three dozen black-merino socks: total value, £24 4s.

Thames. —Herbert Charles Woolmer, manager, Waitekauri Extended Gold-mining Company, reports stolen from the Hikutaia Raitway - station, between the 2nd and 4th instant, a case containing six dozen pints of Dunedin ale, bottled by Twiname, Auckland ; six 25 lb. boxes of miningcandles, each box marked “ J.IT.S.”; and a 6 lb. steel hammer, stamped “ P. Whitehouse, Camock and Co.” : value, in all, £5 12s.

Hamilton (Waikato). —Joseph N. Read reports stolen, on the 20th ultimo, a gentlemen’s heavy roadster Red Bird bicycle, nearly new, thick tires, new forged-steel clamp on rest under saddle, No. 27275 on bottom of frame at fork ; value, £2O.

Rotorua. —George Gee reports stolen from Mr. Wake’s bakehouse, on the 15th ultimo, a small-sized gold Waltham double-cased watoh, smooth case, No. 2880448, “ Geo. Gee ” engraved on outside ; value, £lO.

Wellington. —Mrs. S. C. Hill, 46, Cambridge Terrace, reports stolen from the grandstand at the Lower Hutt Racecourse, on the 24th November last, a pair of field-glasses, about 6 in. long, dented at both ends, in a black-leather case with strap cut roughly out of a piece of new black leather; value, £4.

Wellington. —H. Leicester, goldsmith, Lambton Quay, reports stolen from his shop, on the Bth ultimo, a set of gold sleeve-links, square pattern, rounded oorners, with bar and chain ; value, £2 4s. Suspicion attached to two men, names unknown, supposed to be spielers, one about thirty-five years of age, 5 ft. 8 in. high, strong build, square jaws, fair moustache only; dressed in a light-tweed sac-suit, lightcoloured flannel shirt, and hard black hat: the other about thirty years of age, 5 ft. 3 in. high, strong build, square jaws, shaved except small dark moustache, dark complexion, sharp dark restless eyes; dressed in a dark sac-suit, and very light Alpine hat. They can be identified. (See Police Gazette, 1899, page 266.) Christchurch. —Theft of William John Hoskins’s bicycle : Claude Holme has been atrested by Constable J. J. Cassells for this offence. Bicyole recovered.

Christchurch. —Arthur Langford Joseph, farmer, Upper Riccarton, reports stolen, during the night of the 15th ultimo, a full set of extra heavy spring-cart harness, brass-mounted, saddle lined with patent leather, dent in one of the brass ornaments on winkers, straight bar-bit with curb-chain attached; value, £7 10s,

Christchurch. —Thomas G. Ashman, salesman, reports stolen from Strange and Co.’s premises, Lichfield Street, on the 23rd ultimo, a Zealandia bicycle, No. 1627,. painted green, turned-down handles, white-bone grips, bell on left handle, lamp-bracket on front fork.

Christchurch. —Benjamin Newman, commercial traveller, Mornington, Dunedin, reports stolen from a railwaycarriage at the Christchurch Station, on the 12oh ultimo, a bright brown Gladstone bag, medium size, nearly new, containing a gold double albert guard, swivel at each end, bar in centre, about If oz. weight ; an albert guard, having five gold-mounted greenstone bars, each about ljin. long, connected by four curb-pattern gold links; a gold albert guard, long links, connected by small rings; a gold albert guard, Bernstein pattern, weight about 1 oz.; a plain gold albert guard, weight about 1 oz.; two white shirts, marked “ 8.N.” on tabs; a novel, “The Orange Girl”; a blue-serge travelling-cap, a silk tie, a pair of black-leather slippers, and a patent soda-water bottle, with two boxes of charges for it: value, in all, £24 Bs. Identification of jewellery, which is new, is doubtful.

Kurow.— Richard W. Dailey, cattle-dealer, Waimate, reports stolen at Hakataramea, between the 4th and 7th ultimo, a plaited kangaroo-leather breast-plate, no buckles, nearly new ; value, £1 2s.

Rangiora. —Alexander William Cook, Bank of New Zeaand, reports stolen from a box at the Moeraki Railwaystation, on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, a gentlemen’s grey-tweed suit with large indistinct squares, “F. Smith, jun.,” on trousers buttons; a boys’ navy-serge Norfolk overcoat, “ Herbert Haynes and Co.” on tab; five white shirts and one pink shirt with white stripes, sizes 15J, marked “J. A. Kirby” and “Houston”; about eight collars, marked “Houston,” size 16; a pair of black-leather boots, and two tennis-shirts: value, about £l2.

Methven. —John Baker, butcher, reports stolen, on the 22nd or 23rd ultimo, seven merino full-wool skins, branded K. 8., value Bs. each; and two pelts, value Is. each.

Dunedin. —Stewart K. Sleigh, clerk, Clyde Street, reports missing, on the 19th ultimo, and supposed stolen, an Irish terrier dog, two years and a half old, short tail, rough brown coat, answers to the name of “ Danny ”; value, £lO. Thomas Fergus’s cuthouse: The soup-ladle, gravy-spoon, pair of sugar-tongs, two egg-spoons, and five tea-spoons have been found in the Otago Harbour.

Orepuki. —Oswald Oscar Reichel reports that on the 10th or 11th ultimo his shop was broken into, and the following stolen : A gentlemen’s Waterbury watch, a ladies’ Waterbury watch, ten Albo silver watch-chains, various patterns; a Remington rifle, 22 - bore ; two Altona razors, two doublebladed pocketknives with tortoise-shell handles, an imitationmeerschaum pipe, a pair of men’s watertight boots, size 9, and a pair of ladies’ walking-shoes : value, £6 6s.
