Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Auckland. —Richard Young is charged on warrant with having deserted his wife, Elizabeth Docherty Young, at Riverhead, during the month of January last. Description : A native of New Zealand, about thirty-nine years of age, about 5 ft. 5 in. high, fair complexion, fair hair and moustache, blue eyes, broken nose, mole on right cheek; usually wears light-brown clothes and hard black-felt hat. Supposed to have gone to one of the gumfields.

Napier, —Michael Connell, charged with wife-desertion, has been arrested by Constable T. J. Drake, Dannevirke police, on information supplied by Detective W. L. Chrystal, of Napier.

Wellington. —Joseph Williams is charged on warrant with disobeying an order of Court to pay £4 per month for the support of his wife and two children. Description: English, a labourer, twenty-six years of age, 5 ft. 6in. or 7 high, medium build, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, heavy eyebrows, heavy brown moustache only, fond of drink, dirty appearance. The sum of £4 was in arrears on the 29th ultimo. He is well known about Christchurch, also at Temuka, where he worked a threshing-machine for a Mr. Lee and at Cheviot. Complainant, Mary Williams, 70, Ghuznee Street, Wellington.

Wellington. —Alfred Smoothy is charged on warrant with failing to provide for the support of his illegitimate child by Rebecca Hanford, of Petone. Description: Colonial, a labourer, twenty-seven years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, brown hair, dark-blue eyes, large nose, scar between eyebrows, shaved except brown moustache, stoops when walking, slightly bow-legged, fond of drink; usually wears dark clothes (longish coat); dirty appearance. He was working for a Mr. Gaines, at the Upper Hutt, until about a month ago, when he left, and has not been heard of since. His parents live near Invercargill.

Wellington. —Joe Harrop is charged on warrant with deserting his wife, Abizel, since the 6th December, 1896. Description : English, a cabinetmaker and builder, forty-two years of age, sft. 7 in. or 8 in. high, thin build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair turning grey, grey eyes, shaved except heavy dark-brown moustache, Roman nose, scar on left temple ; fond of company ; respectable appearance. He left for Wanganui during the above month to do some carpentering for Colonel McDonnell, and has not been heard of since. For inquiry only. Information to be sent to the Inspector of Police, Wellington, before effecting arrest.

Description: Scotch, a grocer, years/iM age, 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build/ darkbrown hair, brown eyes, sma nil 'brown/Jfuougtache only, heavy eyebrows, two joints littleumger, scar on right hand between third and little fingeif warts jin each hand; dressed in a light or brown suit; Respectable appearance. Christchurch. —Albert Ranby is charged on warrant to apprehend with disobeying an order of Court, made on the 24th September, 1895, to pay 15s. a week towards the support of his two children. Description: A native of Oxford, New Zealand, about thirty years of age, about 5 ft. 9 in. high, medium build, florid complexion, long nose, very fair moustache, brown hair, very dark heavy eyebrows; fond of talking about wrestling. (See Police Gazette, 1897, page 48.) The sum of £63 was unpaid on the 12th instant. He was last heard of at Rangiora, Canterbury, but may endeavour to leave the colony.

Christchurch. —William George Fergusson, charged with disobeying an order for the support of his illegitimate child, paid the amount mentioned in the warrant to Constable D. Rowles, Devonport (Auckland) police, on the 23rd February last. He was subsequently arrested on another warrant of commitment for failing to find sureties to comply with the order in question.
