Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.
New Plymouth. —Robert Anderson, commercial traveller, Wanganui, reports stolen from the Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth,between the 21st and 23rd ultimo, a brown-leather writing-desk, about 16in. by 13in., inscribed “ Arch. Clark and Son ” over a brass lock, containing a large order-book, morocco-bound note-book, a cheque-book on the Bank of New Zealand, Wanganui, No. 451251 to 370, invoices, and other papers; value, £1 15s.
Wanganui. —Alexander Hogg is charged on warrant with having, on the sth instant, broken into the dwelling of James Gordon and Albert Merson, bakers, Maria Place, and stolen therefrom £7. Offender is a native of the colony (Scotch parentage), a labourer, nineteen or twenty years of age, dark complexion, black hair, none on face, stout build ; dressed in a short dark square-cut coat, dark waistcoat, old striped trousers, and black hard-hitter hat. His parents reside in Westport.
Woodville. —Agnes Ottaway reports stolen from her hotel, about the 16th ultimo, a carriage-rug, check pattern, light and brown squares ; value, £1 10s. Suspicion attached to Fred Annear and George Castle, who have since been arrested at Hastings for forgery.
Pahautanui. —Mrs. L. Levy, Paremata, reports stolen from her dwelling, on 30th ultimo, a plain broad gold ring, engraved “ L.L.” ; value, £1 10s. Suspicion attached to a swagger, twenty-four years of age, about sft. Sin. high, fair complexion, slight build, thin features, long hooked nose, blue eyes; wore a grey suit, dirty white shirt, and light laceup boots; carried a small bundle in a handkerchief. Supposed to have gone towards Palmerston North.
Christchurch. —Rose Julia Whitta, grocer, 328, Tuam Street, reports that, during the night of the 13th instant, her dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A gold horse-shoe bracelet, set with thirteen pearls ; two gold watchchains, long, square, and small round links alternately, one having a greenstone pendant; a set of gold studs, heartshaped ; a ladies’ gold ring with four emeralds and three diamonds in claw setting ; a gold bar-brooch, leaf in centre, set with two pearls and a sapphire; and £l3 10s. in cash: total value, £32 10s. Suspicion attached to Arthur Hinge, Charles Curran, and Alfred alias Walter Millar. (For description, see Police Gazette, 1895, pages 159 and 133, and 1894, page 49, respectively.
Dunedin. John Thomas Jarvis, slaughterman, Maori Hill, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 24th January last and the Bth ultimo, an old silver open-faced English lever watch, half bull’s-eye, maker and number unknown, chocolate-coloured face, “ J. T. Jarvis” on inside of case; value, £lO.
Dunedin. Sarah Ann Dykers, housekeeper at J. P. Jones’, St. Clair, reports stolen from her bedroom, on the Ist instant, a ladies’ gold ring, set with a large diamond in the centre; value, £2O.
