Offences Not Otherwise Described.
Auckland. —Edward Otway is charged on warrant with having, on the 27th April last, forged and uttered to Thomas Quoi a cheque for £25, purporting to be signed by Dr. Laishley, solicitor. Description : Supposed colonial, twentysix years of age, sft. 6in. high, medium build, clean-shaved, dark complexion, dark hair, smart appearance, generally dressed in dark clothes and black hard-felt hat.
Auckland. —John Grant, alias Charles Innis Petrie, is charged with disobeying the terms of his release under the First Offenders’ Probation Act. Description: A native of Scotland, a labourer, thirty-four years of age, sft. B^in. high, fair complexion, light-brown hair, brown eyes, long nose (see Police Gazette, 1894, page 151). Offender left the employ of Mr. Burnett, of Walton, Te Aroha district, on the 11th February last.
Eketahuna. —Thomas Broomhall Smith, alias J. B. Steele, is charged on warrant with false pretences on John Carter on the 14th April last. Offender is a native of England, a rabbiter, fifty-two years of age, sft. llin. high, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, grey eyes, long nose. (See Police Gazette, 1894, page 26.) He obtained six weeks’ board and lodging, amounting to £7 10s., by representing he had money coming to him in a month, and would then pay.
Wanganui. Thomas McCluskey, alias Cosgrove, is charged on warrant of commitment to Wanganui Gaol for fourteen days’ labour in default of paying £1 3s. fine and costs for travelling by the ss. “ Manawatu ” from Grey-
mouth without paying his fare. Description : Scotch, a spieler, about twenty-nine years of age, sft. 3Jin. high, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, small nose. Photographed at Auckland on 13th May, 1893. (See Police Gazette, 1893, pages 90 and 172.)
Masterton.— A man, name unknown, is charged with having on the 15th instant forged and uttered to Percy Cole, Blairlogie store, a cheque for £5. Offender is supposed Scotch, about forty-five years of age, about sft. Gin. high, medium build, dark complexion, hair and beard turning grey; was wearing light-coloured trousers, cardigan jacket, and soft black wideawake hat. He may be identical with Daniel Spence, alias Fraser, alias McNeill, alias Grant (see Police Gazette, 1894, pages 143 and 186). The cheque was drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, and purported to be signed by C. Fendel, but has been declared a forgery. On the same date he tendered another cheque for £4 to Mr. Riddle, of Taueru, purporting to be signed by the same person, payable to A. Grant. No warrant.
Dunedin. —Thomas Blue is charged on warrant of commitment for seven days’ hard labour in default of paying £1 135., fine and costs for a breach of Dunedin City bylaws. Description: A native of New Zealand, a cab-driver, about eighteen years of age, sft. 9in. high, slight build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, clean-shaved except small fair moustache ; dressed when last seen in a dark - tweed suit, and black hard-felt hat.
