Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —David Stirling is charged on warrant with having, on the 4th instant, stolen from George Nicol, shearer, four £1 notes. Offender is English, a labourer, about twentyfive years of age, sft. 7£in. high, medium build, fresh complexion, light-brown hair, grey eyes, fair moustache only ; wore dark clothes and hard black hat.

Manaia. —Leslie Young, stableman, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Manaia Hotel, on the 20th or 21st ultimo, a black stamped-leather purse, six compartments, containing a receipt for a saddle from A. Young to E. Young, and £1 2s. 6d. in cash. Suspicion attached to a young man, name unknown, who occupied the same room. Description : About twenty-one years of age, sft. 9in. high, medium build, ruddy complexion, sharp features, pointed nose, fair hair, small fair moustache only; dressed in a darlc-tweed sac-coat with breast bocket, dark-grey trousers and vest, soft grey-felt hat, light-coloured flannelette shirt, and watertight boots; talks guardedly; said he had been in Napier and Gisborne.

Manaia. —Robert Ephraim Briggs reports that on the 20th ultimo his dwelling was broken into and the following stolen: A tweed coat, pepper-and-salt pattern, size 5, lined with black silesia, two pockets on each hip, breast pockets inside and out, black smooth buttons, value £1 6s. 6d., the property of George Williams; also £1 ss. 6d. in cash, belonging to Mr. Briggs. Suspicion attached to a lad, name unknown, eighteen to twenty years of age, apparently a sailor, about sft. Gin. high, stoutish build, very small fair moustache, fair hair, right foot lame, rolling gait; dressed in a light coat and vest and darker trousers, two holes cut in toes of boots, lightfelt hat.

Palmerston North. —Thomas Lloyd, carter, reports stolen from him on the 22nd ultimo a silver lever Rotherham hunt-ing-watch, No. 22053, T.L. on outside of case, much worn, plain silver chain with steel spring attached. Value £6 10s.

Christchurch. —Charles Henry Smith, grocer, Victoria and Peterborough Streets, reports that on the 29th or 30th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: 100 £lb. packets of tea, Victoria T Company’s assorted brands ; a box of electric candles, branded N.C.; and a quantity of flour, sugar, cocoa, pills, &c.: value, £8 14s.

Christchurch. —Lena Seely, South Belt, reports that during the nigbt of the 6th ultimo her dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: An iron box, containing a small mother-of-pearl casket, value 10s., and two gold-bar brooches, one mounted with three pearls, the other plain, value £3 ; also twenty-two £1 notes, and £54 in gold. Box, minus contents, since found. This is considered to be a doubtful case.

Christchurch. Alexander Campbell Mclntyre, Cashel Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 4th and 6th instant, three white shirts, a suit of dark-mixed Kaiapoi tweed, sac-make, size 7 ; two pairs dark-tweed trousers, size 5; two dark-tweed vests, and a black- red- and greystriped rug : value, £5 14s. 6d. Suit of clothes and rug only identifiable.

Christchurch. —George Peircy, grocer, Colombo Street, reports that on the 9th or 10th instant his dwelling was broken into, and £32 worth of tobacco (Ruby, Juno, and Nailrod) stolen.

Little River. —Thomas Bevins, farmer, Kaituna, reports stolen from a cottage at Price’s Valley, between the 11th and 15th ultimo, an old bullock-hide saddle, patched on pommel, rusty stirrup-irons (one round, the other square), two back D’s missing, stirrup-leather for girth ; and a singlereined bridle with square rusty buckles and snaffle-bit, throat-strap stiched on at top of headpiece : value, £2 10s.

Oamaru. —Wiilliam Grant, farmer, Temuka, reports stolen from an unoccupied house at Peebles, between the 10th October, 1894, and the 26th ultimo, a ladies’ gold dress-ring, set with three small diamonds, three rubies, and a blue stone ; a silver brooch, about the size of half a crown, small brown stones all round, and topaz-stone in centre ; a single blue blanket, about half-worn; and the bottoms of two pairs of brown-ribbed woollen socks: value, £2 10s.

Dunedin. —Philip Richard Tiltman, secondhand dealer, George Street, reports that on the Bth instant his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : Two gold cameo brooches, a ladies’ gold ring (broken), set with four small diamonds and two or three rubies; and three brown-leather pocketbooks: value, £3 ss.

Dunedin. — Sing Joe, gardener, Forbury, reports stolen from his hut, on the 22nd ultimo, a silver Geneva lever hunting-watch, No. 103237, and 12s. Bd. in coin.

Bluff. —William Drake reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, a new double-breasted black coat, a ladies’ grey ulster, a fur boa, a ladies’ brown mackintosh showing a blue-tinged check, and a child’s fawncoloured coat: value, £7 10s.
