Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

Wanganui. —Edward Griggs is charged on warrant with deserting his wife and two children since the 12th February last. Description • English, a barman or waiter, about twenty-six years of age, sft. 7in. high, dark hair and complexion, small brown moustache. He left for Wellington to look for work, and may go to Featherston, where his sister, Mrs. Davidson, keeps a boardinghouse.

Napier.— William Clements, charged with deserting his wife and child, has been arrested by Sergeant A. J. Mitchell, Hastings police, and remanded to Napier.

Pahiatua. —Thomas Hughes is charged on warrant of commitment to the Terrace Gaol, Wellington, for three months for disobeying an order of Court to maintain his children in the Burnham Industrial School. Description : English, forty to forty-five years of age, slight active build, sft. 6in. or 7in. high, light-brown or ginger hair beard and moustache, sometimes shaves on chin or wears moustache only, small sharp deep-set eyes, rather hollow cheeks, nose rather flat; intemperate, very talkative and quarrelsome when in drink. Last heard of at Waitotara, in January of this year, and is well known to most of the police in the Taranaki District. Amount of arrears, £97 4s.

Wellington. —Edward Johnston Murdoch is charged on warrant of commitment to the Terrace (Wellington) Gaol for two months in default of paying £42 75., costs of an appeal against an order of the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court to pay 7s. 6d. a week towards the support of his illegitimate child by M. Daly. Offender is a native of New Zealand, a police constable, has been a bootmaker, twentj 7 -seven years of age, sft. 10£in. high, medium build, fair hair, fair complexion, grey eyes, clean-shaved except slight fair moustache, rather prominent nose and cheekbones, has a habit of blinking his eyes when speaking, scar over forehead, smart appearance ; dressed in a dark-tweed sac-suit, and hard drab or black hat. Two further warrants have been issued for his arrest, one for commitment to the same gaol for six months for failing to find security for payment of the order, the other for deserting his illegitimate child. He absconded from the Mount Cook Police-station during the night of the 12th instant.

Wellington. —George Greenwood is charged on warrant with failing to provide for his two children since the 25th ultimo. Description: English, a commercial traveller, thirty-nine years of age, sft. Sin. high, ruddy complexion, hair inclined to be sandy, moustache only, stout build; usually wears a dark sac-suit and hard black-felt hat.

Christchurch. —Herbert Malcolm Scott is charged on warrant with having deserted his child since the 25th ultimo. Description: A native of Hobart, Tasmania, a blacksmith, twenty-four years of age, medium build, very dark complexion, dark-brown eyes, clean-shaved. He spoke of going to Carterton, in the Wellington District.

Christchurch. —John Leonard is charged on warrant with disobeying an order of Court to pay ss. a week towards the support of his wife. Description: Irish, a brewer, fifty years of age, sft. Bin. high, slight build, sandy beard whiskers and moustache, brown hair, fair complexion, blue eyes. He is well known in Wanganui, and is said to have gone from there to Auckland. The sum of £7 ss. was in arrears on the 20th ultimo.

Christchurch.— Thomas Yarr is charged on warrant with having deserted his wife since about the 25th ultimo. Description : A native of Belfast, Ireland; a barman and hotelkeeper, has also been a groom and coachman, thirty-seven years of age, sft. sin. high, slight build, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair whiskers beard and moustache, cut short; leans his head forward when walking; usually wears a good brown-tweed sac-suit. Was licensee of the Southern Cross Hotel, Addington. He was heard of at Auckland on the 25th ultimo, and will probably endeavour to leave the colony.

Sydney. —George William Dover is charged on warrant with having deserted his wife and child since November, 1894. Description: A native of Victoria, a bootmaker, twenty-five years of age, about sft. 6in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, light-brown hair, very small fair moustache, marks of old wounds on breast caused by an accident when swimming. He appears to have been employed for

about a week in December last by Mr. William Grant, dairyman, Ellerslie, Auckland, and was then going under the name of William Henderson, but no trace of him can now be obtained. If found he should be informed that unless he makes arrangements for paying £1 per week his arrest will be demanded. Photograph and warrant at Commissioner’s office. (95/190.)
