Escaped Prisoners.
Wellington. Roderick McKenzie escaped from the Point Halswell Prison on the morning of the 23rd ultimo. Description : A native of Waipawa, Hawke’s Bay, N.Z., about twenty years of age, sft. s£in. high, pale complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, large nose, strong build, wide mouth, scars on left forefinger and on ball of right thumb, wart on right thumb, large birth-mark on left leg, scars on right knee-cap and below right knee, two long dark scars across right shin. He was convicted at Napier on the 11th September last for breaking and entering, and sentenced to two years’ labour. Photograph, taken at Napier on 11th March,
1893, at principal police-stations. (See also Police Gazette, 1893, page 130.) A whare close to the prison was broken into, supposed on the above date, and the following stolen therefrom : A grey-tweed sac coat, grey-check trousers, black jersey with monogram “ W.R.F.U.” on breast, and a pair of brown-canvas shoes, which McKenzie may be wearing. A pair of double blue blankets, a black rug, and some provisions were also stolen at the same time.
Cootamundra (New South Wales).— Michael Ryan, alias Jim Maloney, who was under committal on a charge of breaking and entering, escaped from the Cootamundra Gaol on the 11th July, 1894. Description: Twenty-one years of age, sft. 7£iu. high, sallow complexion, thin build, small features, brown hair, grey eyes, slightly round-shouldered, no beard whiskers or moustache, hair grows down on forehead ; dressed in prison clothing, and soft black-felt hat; a labourer, a native of Goulburn. [Offender is said to have gone to Auckland, New Zealand ; but no trace of him can be obtained there. Further inquiries are requested, and if his whereabouts is ascertained information should be sent to the Commissioner’s office, where a photograph may be seen. (95/22.)]
