Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. —George S. Graham, insurance agent, Lower Symonds Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 29th June last and 23rd ultimo, a ladies’ diamond and emerald ring, gipsy setting; a gold hair-pin, set with a brilliant; three yards of pale-blue merino ; a pale-blue underskirt with gold braiding ; two white embroidered petticoats; and a silver tablespoon, teaspoon, and fork, the latter engraved “ G ” : value, £l6 14s.

Auckland. —Alice Nelson, Jervois House, Wellesley Street West, reports stolen from her on the 10th or 11th instant a ladies’ gold hunting-watch, chased cases, front case-spring weak, maker and number unknown; and a ladies’ gold albert double-chain, with a sliding bar having two different shades of gold ; pattern resembles a twist: value, £l7.

Cambridge. —Breaking into and stealing from the shop of Roger Williams Sargent: The following articles have been found under a bush, and restored to complainant: viz., the marble clock, two nickel-silver and two Waterbury watches, two E.P. card-stands, two napkin-rings with figures of cat and dog, E.P. sugar-and-cream stand, toast-rack and butterdish (combined), three pepper-bottles, and one of the silver pickle-forks.

Waitara. —Robert Wright, Mimi, reports stolen from him at Waitara, on the 23rd instant, a black-leather pocket-book, containing a £lO note on the Bank of New Zealand. Suspicion attached to Robert Frederick Robb, English, a builder, thirty-five to forty years of age, about sft. Bin. high, stout build, dark hair complexion and moustache only, rather weak eyes; dresses well. He is now residing at the Railway Hotel, Inglewood, and is well known in the Taranaki District. Pocket-book, minus the note, since recovered.

Stratford. —Alfred Watkin, Palmer Road, Cardiff, reports stolen from his dwelling on the 11th instant a small leather clasp-purse, containing one £5 and five £1 notes, and about £2 in silver; also, a silver open-faced watch, much worn, glass broken, maker and number unknown, value £1 10s.

Wanganui. Hori Hautau, Kauangaroa, reports that during the night of the 16th instant his dwelling was broken into, and six £1 notes and a dark-grey-tweed paget suit, value £4, stolen. Suspicion attached to Alfred Smith, a young man who has been living with complainant for about twelve months. Description : About twenty years of age, about sft. Sin. high, fair hair and complexion, no hair on face, slight build, nose turned up, said to be weak-minded ; dressed in a shabby grey suit, or may be wearing the stolen one. Supposed to have gone towards Patea or Hawera.

Wanganui. —Wiki Hunia, of Levin, reports stolen from her bedroom at Mrs. Shelley’s boarding-house, Wanganui, on the 19th instant, a black opossum rug, with tails about 9in. long, brown lining ; value, £lO.

Palmerston North. —James Wan Quin reports that on the 16th instant his shop was broken into, and three £1 notes, 17s. in silver, and 51b. Juno tobacco, value £1 75., stolen.

Palmerston North. —Mary Lorrigan, barmaid, Commercial Hotel, reports stolen from her, in the hotel, on the night of the 19th instant, a lady’s gold lever double-cased watch, No. 54, initials ML on outside, crown between figures, maker unknown; and a gold albert, with gold ball and cross as pendants: value, £ls.

Gisborne. —Adolph Sevenson reports stolen from a bedroom at Budd’s restaurant, on the 21st or 22nd instant, a new black-leather pocket-book, containing four £lO and ten £1 notes on the Bank of Australasia. William Ireland, a jockey, who occupied the same room, was arrested at Auckland for the offence, and discharged, only six £1 notes being found on him. He is a colonial, about twenty years of age, sft. sin. high, very light fair hair, small fair moustache, round face, blue eyes, medium build ; dressed in a black coat and vest, light trousers, and hard black hat.

Wellington. —Thomas William Bonthorne, ironmonger, / Herald Street, Newtown, reports stolen from his dwelling, ,/ between the 10th and 18th instant, a ladies’ gold lever openfaced watch, very old, glass and hands off; a fine gold chain about 6in. long, gold oval-shaped locket, with JWB on the outside, attached; a plain gold wedding-ring; and a morocco-leather purse, maroon colour, four pockets, claspfastening : value, about £lO.

Wellington. —John O’Neal reports stolen from a bedroom at Smith’s restaurant, Willis street, on the 14th instant, a gold albert chain, very small links ; value, £3 10s.

Wellington. —H. C. Young reports stolen from Mrs. Morecroft’s boarding-house, Hill Street, on the 12th or 13th instant, a mackintosh coat, size 54in., same as worn by foot constables, nearly new, value £1 14s. 6d.; and a pair of lace-up boots, size 8, value 15s.

Wellington. —W. Carlile reports stolen from Mrs. Morecroft’s boarding-house, Hill Street, on the 12th or 13th instant, a red-and-brown-check tweed waterproof, with cape ; value, £2.

Lyttelton. —Frederick Beverley, licensee, Saxon Hotel, reports stolen from his bar, on the 18th instant, a galvanised white-metal 'pint pot, with name; of hotel engraved on centre; value, £l. Firemen on s.s. “ Tongariro ” suspected.

Christchurch. Richard Brown, Barbour Street, Linwood, reports that, during the night of the 27th instant, his dwelling was broken into, and six chased silver napkin-rings, value £2 155., stolen.

Rakaia. —Charlotte Behrns, widow, reports stolen from her dwelling, between the 2nd and 10th instant, a black cash-box with yellow lines, 6in. by 4in. by 3in., containing one £lO and three £1 notes, receipts, and papers.

Dunedin. —Robert Sutton, carpenter, Maria street, South Dunedin, reports that on the 16th instant his dwelling was broken into, and a gold engagement-ring, set with five pearls and two rubies (one of the latter missing), and a copper powder-flask, stolen. Value, £3 2s. 6d.

Dunedin. —John Grubb, Inspector of Post-offices, reports stolen from a bedroom in the City Hotel, on the 16th or 17th instant, a small pig-skin purse, containing his railway-pass, nine sovereigns, and two keys.
