Horse- and Cattle-Stealing.

Papakura. —Stealing James M. Laing’s horses: Michael O’Shea arrested. The other boy, Michael Charles Bourne (not Brone), has been arrested by Constable E. Lowther, Kihikihi police, and the bay gelding recovered.

Te Awamutu. —Joseph McNamara, charged with the theft of a horse, saddle, and bridle, the property of Henry Lewis (recovered), has been arrested by Chief Detective M. Grace, Auckland police, and remanded to Te Awamutu.
Martinborough. — August Lhaman reports stolen from the Club Hotel paddock, during the night of the 2nd ultimo, a bay mare, branded X in a circle, hind feet white, white blaze down face, mark of having been recently staked on rump; value, £ls. Suspicion attached to Olof Hagerstrom, a Swede, about thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, full ginger beard and moustache, bald on top of head; wore a rough blue paget coat, soft drab billycock hat, new watertight boots, new long brown-leather leggings, and spurs. May endeavour to leave the colony for Coolgardie, Western Australia. (See also “Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.”)
Christchurch. —Michael Nolan is charged on warrant with having, about the 15th August last, stolen from a paddock at Lincoln a cow, value £B, the property of Henry Townshend. Since recovered. Offender is Irish, thirty-five to forty years of age, about sft. 9in. high, medium build, sallow complexion, brown hair, brown beard of medium length, unkempt whiskers (high on cheek-bones), moustache inclined to sandy; dressed in a common brown-tweed suit, and soft black-felt hat; untidy-looking; a labourer and swagger. Is well known to many of the Irish labourers and potato-diggers throughout Canterbury, and has a brother, a farmer, in the Lincoln district.
Culverden. —John Rogers, Hanmer Plains Springs, reports stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo a chestnut cob gelding, aged, about 14 hands high, white face, short tail, shod all round, shoes much worn; value, £9. May have been taken by rabbiters in the direction of Blenheim.
Lyell. — Mary Anne Sewell, Owen Junction, reports stolen on the 10th or 11th instant two cross-bred ewes, branded SO on back ; and three cross-bred lambs (one ewe and two wethers), all marked Y on left ears ; value, £1 12s. Oil the 21st or 22nd ultimo one sheep and five lambs, also the property of the complainant, were wilfully killed. Suspicion is attached to Walter Neame, a farmer and roadcontractor, residing at Fern Patch, near Owen Junction.
