Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person, &c.

Auckland. Thomas Robert Jamerson, Morningside, Kingsland, reports that on the 15th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen: A ladies’ gold ring, set with three rubies and two diamonds in the centre; a plain oval-shaped silver brooch; a silver brooch, with small lumps and silver band round edge ; a small plain gold locket with hair in the back ; a black Japanese toy chest of three drawers, about 13in. by 9in. ; two plain silver bangles ; a large white silk handkerchief; £1 ss. in silver and coppers; a morocco purse ; and two full-sized white blankets, nearly new, five red stripes across the ends of each, one of them marked “J. D. Hill ” on a piece of tape : total value, £l3 9s. 6d.

Auckland. —John Chappel (boy) is charged on warrant with having, between the Ist and 19th March last, stolen from the shop of William Williams, draper, Karangahapo Road, a pair of trousers and vest, value £1; since recovered. Offender is a native of Auckland, fourteen years of age, 4ft. lOin. high, full round face, very much freckled, fair hair; dressed in light-tweed' trousers patched on seat, dark-tweed coat, and black-felt hat, dirty appearance. Supposed to have gone to the Waikato district.

Auckland. —George Mason, express-driver, Mount Roskill, reports that on the 22nd ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A round metal clock, Waterbury watch, jet guard, two silver thimbles, two gold lockets, blueenamelled ; two silver pins, “CE ” on heads; four silver brooches, each having two silver bars connected by a ring, one of them marked “ Lizzie ” ; four other brooches—viz., large jet, twist pattern; gold mourning, oval-shaped; ivory ditto; and one set with a yellow stone : a gold ring set with a blue stone and five pearls ; a silver buckle-ring ; pair of jet bracelets ; black photograph-case ; silver ear-ring ; a cedar box, with view on lid ; a silver arrow, with Scotch pebble in centre ; a silk purse ; microscope ; and a metal teapot, with a thistle on lid : value £8 17s.

Auckland. —George Dale Ellis is charged on warrant with having, on or about the 21st ultimo, broken into the dwelling of Ernest J. French, Flagstaff Road, Devonport, and stolen therefrom a silk dress, silk shawl, dress-suit, and several articles of jewellery. Since recovered. Offender is a native of Auckland, a sailor, twenty-one years of age, sft. sin. high, stout build, fresh complexion, dark-brown hair, brown eyes, pug nose, an upper front tooth out, woman over J.P. tattooed on left arm; dressed in a grey-tweed suit, and soft browntweed cap. Thames. —Elizabeth Fraser, Tararu, reports stolen from her dwelling during a fire on the 27th March last, a ladies’ diamond ring, single stone, in case ; two ladies’ gold rings, one set with a ruby and diamonds, the other turquoises and small diamonds; a gold ring, set with five stones; two ladies’ gold hair rings (one with heart in centre); a gold bracelet with blue enamel and pearls, in case ; a gold locket with filigree work in front; a Scotch-pebble bracelet, joined

with silver, silver padlock attached; a hair bracelet, with broad band of fair hair, gold hinge, set with gems; one ditto with gold and blue-enamelled clasp, heart-shaped pendant set with pearls attached ; one ditto, gold-mounted, balls attached ; a silver bracelet, snake pattern ; a large Scotchpebble brooch, set in gold ; a small silver brooch ; a silver locket; a large Scotch brooch, shaped like a cornucopia, set in silver; and a gentlemen’s gold and enamelled scarfpin, horse-slioe design, lettered “ Alice Hawthorne,” in a leather case : value £66 ss. One of the rings has been traced to the possession of a lad named Charles Bolger, now in custody on remand.

Wanganui. —Robert William Pocles is charged on warrant with having, on the 10th ultimo, stolen from a dwelling at Aramoho a silver Waltham hunting-watch, slight dent on back of case, number unknown, twisted silver chain attached; value, £7; the property of Charles Curties. Offender is English, about twenty-four years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, very slight build, weighs 8 stone, dark complexion, usually flushed from drink, dark hair, clean-shaved, both feet partially deformed, being very short in front, which affects his walk; dressed in a blue-serge suit, and lightcoloured skull-cap, displays a good deal of shirt-front and collar; frequents hotel-bars. Was at the Empire Hotel, Wellington, on 12th ultimo.

Palmerston North. —James Smith MacArthur, bankclerk, residing at the Royal Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, throe coats, a vest, and a pair of trousers ; value, £9 ss. Since recovered at the shop of Mrs. Richardson, a secondhand dealer. Suspicion attached to William Jakeson, alias Johnston, alias Jacobson, a native of Finland, a seaman, twenty-two years of age, sft. 6Jin. high, stout build, fair hair and complexion, not much hair on face, two small cuts on nose, American flag and eagle on right arm, bracelet on each wrist. Tolaga Bay. —Henry Dobbin, labourer, reports stolen from his tent, on the 9th ultimo, a silver lever Rotherham hunt-ing-watch, “ Sold by Salek, Ashburton,” on dial; a long silver old-fashioned chain : and a leather pouch : value, £ll Is.

Woodvillb. —William Kayle, Pirie Street, Wellington, reports stolen from the Club Hotel, Woodville, on the 18th or 19th ultimo, a pepper-and-salt coloured overcoat with large cape, no sleeves, blue-and-drab lines inside; value £3 15s. Suspicion attached to Samuel Trudgeon, alias Barker, who hoarded at the hotel, and left without paying his bill. (For his description, see Police Gazette, 1894, page 57.) Wore a light suit.

Christchurch. —John Rhodes, Victoria Street, Linwood, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 17tli and 20th ultimo, a ladies’ full-length gold chain, fine pattern ; value, £3.

Christchurch. —James Hennelly, North Road, Styx, reports that on the 6th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and a silver Geneva open-faced watch, No. 108528, value £2, a £1 note, and £1 ss. in silver stolen.

Christchurch. —William Carter, cattle-drover, Lincoln Road, Spreydon, reports stolen from his dwelling, between the 19th and 21st ultimo, a brown-leather pocket-book, containing four £1 notes, about 15s. in silver, a silver-mounted greenstone pendant about 2in. long, and sundry receipts; total value, £5 12s.

Christchurch. —William Ilanrahan, labourer, Cashmere Road, reports that on the 25th ultimo his dwelling was broken into, and the following stolen : A silver lever liuntingwatcli, No. 64534, silver curb chain with bar attached, value £4 10s.; and a bluo-and-white check handkerchief, value ss.

Christchurch. —Albert Body, labourer, Holmes’s Restaurant, reports stolen from his bedroom, between the 22nd and 25tli ultimo, a dark-tweed sac-coat, and two vests of similar material; all having dark lining, and dark bone-buttons: value, £2 10s.

Oamaru. —Miss Bertha Lee, Mersey Street, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 24th ultimo, a ladies’ old gold open-faced English lever watch, gold dial, black hands, filigree work on back case, rather large size, maker’s name and number unknown, two small pieces of very fine gold chain attached; a ladies’ small gold-wire bangle, with a Jubilee sixpence and half of a threepenny-bit attached ; and four half-crowns : value in all, £6 10s.

Supposed have been taken by some of the crew of the s.s. “ Tekoa,” which left for Wellington on the following day.

Greymouth. —John Hogg reports stolen from the premises of Forsyth and Masters, ironmongers, about the 10th ultimo, a tweed waterproof coat with cape, dark-brown check pattern, 54in. long, large size ; value, £3 2s. 6d.

Greymouth. —Charles Lloyd, labourer, Wharf Hotel, reports stolen from him, on the 19th ultimo, three £5 notes, and £l4 or £ls in sovereigns and £1 notes.
