Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Hunterville. —Jeremiah Bacovich reports stolen from his store, on the 7th or Bth instant, a new silver huntingwatch, medium size, makers Stewart, Dawson, and Co., No. 26745 ; value £2 2s. 6d.

Auckland. —Alexander Henderson, upholsterer, Karangahape Road, reports stolen from his shop, on the Bth instant, two footstools, horse-shoe shape, about 14in. across, showing a stained kauri frame 2in. wide, on which “ Good Luck ” is engraved, one of them upholstered in blue plush, the other in grey tapestry ; value £1 6s.

Auckland.— Stealing A. H. Nathan’s boiler: John Connolly has been arrested for this offence by Constable R. Hodgson, and fined £5 or three months’ labour. Boiler recovered.

Auckland. —Edward John Martin, Mount Eden, reports that, between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on the 7th instant, his dwelling was broken into, and a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 5719, value £3, stolen. Entrance effected by bursting open the front door.

Auckland. —James Paul, College Hill, Ponsonby, reports stolen from him, while drunk, on the 27th ultimo, nine £1 notes. Slight suspicion is attached to William O’Brien, a cabman, who took him home from Newmarket. Description : Irish, thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, fresh complexion, medium build, brown moustache only.

Description : A colonial of Irish parentage, about twenty-two years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, dark-grey eyes, dark-brown hair, small light moustache only. Has gone to an uncle at Waverley. Complainant no longer suspects the man Kirk referred to in the above-quoted reference.

Hastings. —William Wclbome Beecroft, Railway Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 14th instant, a blackleather box, about 12in. by 6in., containing two razors, shav-ing-brush, looking-glass, gentlemen’s gold watch-chain, close curb-pattern, with square gold locket attached ; pair of gold solitaires, quartz in centres; a coloured-silk pocket-handker-chief, and about £2 in silver; total value £ll 6s. Suspicion is attached to Lucy Walden, who was warned off the premises, and has gone to Waipawa. (For her description see Police Gazette, 1891, pages 137 and 176.)

New Plymouth. —Joseph Knight Collins, keeper of the tollgate at Omata, reports that, about 8 p.m. on the 2nd instant, a man, name unknown, entered the tollhouse, presented a revolver, and demanded money, on which complainant gave him about £5 in silver. Offender is of medium height and build, had crape over his face, wore a red tunic, and carried a cavalry-sword. Mr. Collins was paralysed with fear, and can give but little assistance in tracing the offender.

Palmerston North. —William Johnston, traveller for Algar and Cowlam, tailors, Wellington, reports stolen from the Phoenix Hotel, Palmerston North, on the 14th instant, a tweed overcoat and cape, black and yellow check, marked size 5 below the left-hand pocket; value £3. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Herbert Pritchard, grocer, Manners Street, reports stolen from his shop, between 7 p.m. on the 18th and 8 a.m. on the 19th instant, about 301 b nailrod and Juno tobacco; value £7. Entrance effected by unlocking the front door with a duplicate-key.

Wellington. The Union Clothing Company, Cuba Street, report stolen from their shop-door, on the 20th instant, a suit of lightest-coloured saddle-tweed, to fit a medium-sized man; value £2 17s. 6d. Identifiable.

Wellington. —William Murrell, draper, Banks Terrace, reports stolen, on the 9th instant, a roll (30yd.) of white flannel with small grey edge; value £1 2s.

Wellington. —Alfred Lindsay, Lambton Quay, reports stolen from his shop-door, on the 21st instant, a pair of gumboots, size 8 or 9, “ Candy ” stamped on heels ; value £1 ss.

Spit (Napier). —Meban and Wilson, Waghorne Street, report stolen from their shop-door, on the 16th instant, a pair of calf shooting-boots, hand-sewn, size 7, toe-caps and toeplates, yellow bottoms, black insteps, no nails, private mark, 1806 on soles ; value 18s. 6d. Identifiable.

Christchurch. —Henry Stark Drummond, Waltham Arms Hotel, Sydenham, reports that, between 10.15 p.m. on the 11th and 6.45 a.m. on the 12th instant, his premises were broken into, and the following stolen : £ll 10s. in cash, two large and three small flasks of Champagne Vineyard Company’s brandy, two small flasks Buchanan blend whiskey, a bottle of Dreadnought ditto, and a half-pint pewter with glass bottom, and engraved “Waltham Arms;” value £l2 18s. Pewter identifiable.

Riverton. —Robert Bowie Lindsay, Palmerston Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 16th or 17th ultimo, a silver Geneva hunting-watcli, maker unknown, No. 37 over 37 on inner case, which is of brass, a dent on front of outside case; value £1 10s. Suspicion attached to Frederick Stevens, a native of the colony, about twenty years of age, about sft. 6in. high, slight build, dark complexion and hair, small dark moustache only, slovenly gait; lives with his father at Otaitai Bush, Wallace County.

Greymouth. Thomas Jones, Post-office Hotel, reports stolen, on the 3rd instant, a small square wire cage, containing a cock-canary ; value £lss. Identification doubtful.
