Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Woodville. —Joseph Barrett, labourer, reports stolen from him, on the Ist instant, a silver lever hunting-watch, No. 124577, dark-steel hands, makers H. Phillips and Co., London ; attached was a curb-pattern nickel chain with a jubilee and ordinary shilling for pendants; value £4 10s.

Wanganui. —Charles Coleman, busliman, reports stolen from the passage of the Provincial Hotel, Ridgway Street, a white-calico tent, 6ft. by Bft., with fty, about 10ft. by 12ft., containing three single blankets, two of them red with black stripes near edges, the other blue; two pairs of white-calico trousers, two pairs of tweed trousers, size 4, one black, the other light-striped; a dark-tweed sac-coat, rather woolly; and a pair of lace-up boots with sprigs on soles and heels; value £3. Complainant’s address is “Care of Mr. Caddy, butcher, Victoria Avenue, Wanganui.”

Wellington. —lsaac and Loasby, Courtenay Place, report stolen from their shop, on the 2nd instant, two pairs of mens’ lace-up boots with peak toe-caps, plates, and tips, brand resembling the face of a clock on soles ; value £1 Is. Identifiable.

Petone. —Heni Wereta reports stolen from her dwelling, between the 13th ultimo and 4th instant, a gold huntingwatch, chased, complainant’s name engraved on back of case, and a gold pin with diamond in centre; value £23. Suspicion attached to Louisa Carter, residing in the locality, about twenty-two years of age, sft. 6in. high, dark complexion, grey eyes, medium build.

Hawera. —Ernest P. Josling reports stolen from the Imperial Hotel, Normanby, between the 11th and 19th ultimo, a woollen rug, mauve and violet checks, about lin. square, and a blue-diagonal dust-coast, “ J. and R. Sloane, Wellington,” on tab; value £5 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man named Kirton, supposed colonial, about thirty-eight years of age, sft. lOin. high, medium build, fair completion beard whiskers and moustache, light-brown hair, fond of drink, and speaks very loud; dressed in light-tweed suit and hard black hat. He is now working at Hawera.

Gpua. —James Malkin is charged on warrant with having, on tfhe 2nd instant, at Manukau, in company with James » apOTver (arrested), stolen from the hotel of William Tompsitt, wo dead fowls and some meat; value Gs.; recovered. Do--7 scription: English, a bushman, twenty-nine years of age, 6ft. high, medium build, fair complexion, drak-brown curly hair, brown moustache, large blue eyes, aquiline nose; dressed in dark-tweed trousers, bell-bottomed and rather short, greytweed sac-coat, soft brown-felt hat, and lace-up boots with high narrow heels. Probably identical with discharged prisoner of same name. (See Police Gazette, 1892, page 26.) Supposed to have gone to Poxton or Wellington.

Dargaville. —George Smith, employed in the Northern Wairoa Hotel, reports stolen, on the 31st ultimo or Ist instant, a pair of shooting-boots, nearly new, plain toe-caps, no nails; value 18s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —Daniel Cattanach reports stolen from an unoccupied dwelling at Hepburn Street, Ponsonby, between the 2nd and 7th instant, a copper boiler, nearly new, “16 gallons ” stamped inside near the top; value £3. Identifiable.

Waimate (Canterbury). —Philip Richards, tobacconist, reports that, between 12.30 and 7 a.m. on the 2nd instant, his shop was broken into, and the following stolen : Four new Swiss watches, three of them engraved “Swiss Railway Regulator,” the other “Reliance,” on back of cases; a silvermounted wooden pipe, “ The Ascot,” and a meerschaum pipe, both with amber mouthpieces ; value £4 10s. Identification doubtful.

Waimate (Canterbury).— Alfred Perkins reports stolen from his tent at Biuecliffs, between the 16th and 23rd ultimo, a pair of blucher-boots, new, size 9, eyelets taken out; a white-handled razor, chipped near hilt; a mediumsized pair of scissors, two new swag-straps, and a knifesheath ; value £1 Is.

Christchurch. —Reginald Bray reports stolen from his dwelling, Ferry Road, Linwood (date not given), eight ivoryhandled breakfast-knives and two electro-plated forks much worn ; value £1 7s. 6d. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Mary Johnson, formerly domestic servant, residing in Grafton Street, Ferry Road.

Invercargill. —The manager of the New Zealand Clothing Factory, Dee Street, reports stolen, between the 2nd January last and 14th instant, a grey-check-tweed overcoat, size 58in., colours white, brown, and a little black, with detachable cape; value £3 15s. Identifiable by general appearance.

Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings. Otaki.— jfvilliam stolen from the Levin ®Rpmo, a muzzle-loading gun, 19 bore, rsmnjOd new ;walue £2. Identifiable.

Onehunga. —The Onehunga Ironworks Company report stolen from a workroom, between the 18th and 30th ultimo, a smootliing-plane, large brace marked JC, five or six twisted bits, some quill-bits, gimlets, and bradawls, a stock and dies, Jin., §in., and Jin.; a 2ft. box-rule with spiritlevel in it, and a sector for taking circles, complete (the latter is said to be a rare article in the colony) ; value £4. Identifiable.

Ngaruawaiiia. —John Ragg reports stolen from the forecastle of the s.s. “ Freetrader,” on the 2nd instant, a pair of elastic-side boots, size 7, fancy heels, four pennies, and a box of matches; value 14s. sd. Boots identifiable.

Auckland. —The Mount Roskill Road Boardireport stolen from a road-cutting, on the 4th or sth instant?-Gwo kerosenelamps, round, made of tin, burners screw on top, with glass chimneys ; value 10s. Identifiable.

Ciiristchrch. —William Langdown, coal merchant, Sydenham, reports stolen from his stable, between the 16th and 18th ultimo, seventy new sacks, forty of them marked WL in black-ink letters about sin. long ; value £1 15s.

Gore. —Michael Spratt, farmer, reports stolen from the goods-shed, Waikaka railway-siding, during the night of the 25th ultimo, fourteen bags of oats, 4J bushels each, branded F, grain of superior quality ; value £4 14s. 3d.

Port Chalmers. —Edward M. Moss reports stolen from the steam-launch “ Macandrew,” at Portobello Jetty, between the 28th ultimo and 2nd instant, a set of Jin. watergauge cocks, a steam-gauge, “ Anderson and Morrison ” on dial; a steam-whistle, Jin. connection ; and au ejector ; all nearly new ; value £5. Identifiable.

Auckland. —William Fletcher, Kingsland Road, reports stolen from his stable, on the 9th or 10th instant, a mediumsized riding-saddle, complete, “ Jones ” stamped on panels and stirrup-leathers, ripped at left knee-pad, lining very much worn; also a long-handled garden-rake and flat fivepronged potato-fork; value £7 10s. Identifiable.

Clyde (Otago). —Walter Stiven reports stolen from his wagon, on the 9th or 10th instant, a case (1 dozen) of Dennis Mounier’s brandy, marked “J & Co. C,” in black letters; value £3 Bs.

Lyttelton. —The Shaw-Savill and Albion Shipping Company report that during the voyage of the s.s. “ Arawa,” which left London on the 19th February last and arrived at Lyttelton on the 14th instant, four cases of brandy, value £ls, were broken open and the contents stolen; also that eight boxes (23 yards each) of black-silk velvet, value £32, were extracted from a case. The brandy was missed on the steamer’s arrival at Wellington.
