Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1892, page 31.) Wellington. —Henry Mason’s coat, reported stolen from the Government Buildings, has been found ; not stolen.

Auckland. Stealing Samuel Tooman’s wafcli, &c.: Joseph Bright, who was stajdng in the hotel, and cleared out for the .Northern Wairoa on the day of the theft, is now suspected of this offence. He is a gumdigger, about thirtythree years of age, about sft. 6in. high, medium build, lightcoloured hair, had a fair moustache only, but may have grown whiskers. His address is care of McGlachlan, Scarrot’s Run, Tatararaki, Northern Wairoa. In the abovequoted notice complainant should have been referred to as licensee of the Aurora Hotel, Victoria Street, instead of vice versd.

Auckland. —Louis Levy, Cook Street, reports stolen from his shop, on the 17th instant, a South African bockskin rug, new, about 7ft. by 6ft., rather long brown hairs mixed with short white, several shot-holes sewn over, and,marked in blue pencil inside “ 1-5.”

Te Aroha. —John McSweeny and Owen McCabe report stolen from their tent, Te Aroha West, supposed during the night of the 13th ultimo, a woollen rug, nearly new, red white and black colours, diamond pattern ; one woollen rug, pink with brown diamond ; a pair of white-drill trousers, red stripe down seam of legs; an old white-flannel shirt, a small silver teaspoon, nicked across the handle ; a broad leather waist-strap, and two old white-handled knives; value £2 17s. 6d. Suspicion attached to a swagger, about forty years of age, sft. Sin. or 9in. high, stubby sandy beard, slouching gait; wore a dirty grey-tweed suit. Supposed to have gone to Rotorua or Napier, via Taupo.

Thames. Edward Gibbs, Albert Street, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the 15th ultimo, a silver lever huntingwatch, No. 7762, “Thomas Black, Milton,” written on inside of cap, and a silver curb-chain with greenstone pendant attached ; value £lO. Suspicion attached to a man named McLean, who arrived from Gisborne by the schooner “ Enterprise ” on the previous day, and is said to have loft Kopu for Auckland by the s.s. “ Paeroa ” on the 18th ultimo. Description : Scotch, looked like a bushman or station-hand, about fifty years of age, sft. Sin. high, stout build, sallow complexion, deep-sunken grey eyes, grey hair beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in brown-tweed suit and watertightboots ; carried a small swag.

Thames. —Bernard Nicholson, Kauaeranga, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Queen’s Hotel, Thames, between the 7th and 12th ultimo, a dark-worsted sac-coat and vest; value £2 10s. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, about fifty years of age, 6ft. lOin. or llin. high, very red face, full reel beard, medium build. Identification doubtful.

Wanganui. —Thomas Watson, Hunterville, reports stolen from him in Wanganui, on the 19th or 20th ultimo, a silver open-faced watch, No. 48, maker unknown, “ Waterproof,” “Fast,” and “Slow” in red letters on face, “T. Watson” scratched on inside of case ; value £4 10s.

Bulls. —Annie Parker, housemaid, Rangitikei Hotel, reports stolen, on the 17th ultimo, an English silver keyless lever hunting-watch, plain case, gold knob for winding. Nos. 65034 and 20073; attached was a ladies’ silver-twist guard, broken near the end next to watch, and fastened with a piece of pink ribbon ; value £lO 10s.

(See Police Gazette, 1892, page 38.) Geraldine. —John Mcllroy’s burglary : William Coombs has been arrested by Constable W. Willoughby, and admitted the offence. Property recovered, except one of the silvergilt arrow brooches.

Waimate (Canterbury).—Patrick Burke, Redcliff, reports stolen from him in Waimate, on the 20th ultimo, an English silver lever hunting-watch, No. 66191, maker unknown, “ P. Burke ” written inside and P.B. on outside of case, and a silver albert, curb pattern, bridle-bit in centre, with silver horseshoe locket and gold-mounted greenstone attached ; value £lO.

Otautau. —Henry Wood, railway-engine cleaner, Wairio, reports stolen from his dwelling, on the Ist ultimo, an English silver lever double-cased hunting-watch, No. 48337, “Joyce, Reefton ” on works, “ Harry Wood, Railway, Greymouth ” on inside back case, H.W. on outside front case ; a Mexican long and short links alternately:

Green Island (Dunedin). —Larceny from the dwelling of George and Robert Carter: The suspect, Fred Wahilicli (not Walock, as previously reported), has been arrested by Constable W. Pool, Kaitangata Police, and sentenced to one month’s labour. Property, except cash, recovered.

Mosgiel. —William Cameron, draper, reports stolen from his shop-door, on the 25tli ultimo, ten pairs of men’s socks, steel grey and brown grey, private mark 6/ —l/8 on a piece of white paper attached to each pair ; value 16s. Bd.

Timaru. —John Grey Cowan, draper, reports stolen from outside his shop, on the 26th ultimo, four Kaiapoi*woollen shirts, different patterns; value £2 2s.

Christchurch. —Mrs. Olliver, Ruskin Street, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 9th ultimo, a ladies’ Geneva openfaced silver watch, maker’s name and number unknown ; value £3. Identifiable.

Wellington. —Alice Smith, Belfast Street, reports stolen from her dwelling, on the 28th ultimo, a pair of boys’ bluer serge knickerbockers ; value ss. Identifiable.

Masterton. —James Webb, tailor, reports stolen from his shop, between the 22nd and 24th ultimo, a pair of brown-striped-tweed trousers, “ Mr. Davison ” written in pencil on both pockets; value £l.

Wanganui. —Denis O’Keefe, alias Keefe, reports stolen from him at Hunterville, on the 10th ultimo, sixteen £1 notes, bank and numbers unknown. Suspicion attached to James alias Tim Troy, Irish, a blacksmith, athlete, and footballer, twenty-six years of age, 6ft. 3in. high, slender build, sallow complexion, black hair, small dark-brown moustache only, brown eyes, thick nose, irregular teeth, impediment in speech. Residing at Hunterville.

Auckland.- —Andrew Heavy, Victoria Street West, reports stolen from his shop, on the 16tli ultimo, a ladies’ blackvclvet skirt, trimmed with black beads, has been dyed ; value 10s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —James Cullen, Upper Symonds Street, reports stolen from his shop-door, on the 24tli ultimo, a grey-tweed suit, size 5, diamond check running through ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Auckland. —Martha Lindsay, Wellesley Street East, reports stolen from her shop, on the 14th or loth ultimo, a youths’ brown and black striped tweed sac-suit, rather worn, trousers repaired at the bottom ; valued.4s. Identifiable.

Tauranga. —David Asher, licensee, Tauranga Hotel, reports stolen from a bedroom, about the 20th January last, a gold locket, about the size of a half-crown, had formerly been part of a watch, figure of a person in blue enamel on bjick, containing a photograph of complainant; and a small gold chain, the clasp of which, fastened at the back, forms a hand, set with a ruby; value £5. Suspicion attached to Eliza Slone, a housemaid, who left a few days after the theft for Auckland, where she is well known. Her people are said to reside about Upper Queen Street in that city.

Napier. —Richard Hickson, Milton Road, reports stolen from him while drunk, during the night of the 26th ultimo, a brown-leather pocketbook (since recovered), containing about twenty £1 notes. Suspicion attached to James Thornton, a quarter-caste Maori, about twenty-five years of age, sft. 7in. high, stout build, smart and clean-looking, black hair, small black moustache and side whiskers; still in Napier. The pocketbook was picked up on the recreation-ground on the following day.

Napier. William Johns, lodger, City Buffet Diningrooms, reports stolen from his bedroom, on the 14th or 15th ultimo, a £lO note, No. 836, on the Union Bank of Australia, and two £1 notes, bank and numbers unknown.

Ahaura.— John Isaacs, Brandy Jack’s Creek, reports stolen from his dwelling on. the 23rd ultimo, two £lO notes, one of them on the National” Bank, No. B over C 5533, and a £1 note. Case doubtful, as complainant is very old and eccentric, and it is thought may have hidden them.

Reefton. —James Scarlett, of Maori Creek, near Greymouth, reports stolen from a bedroom in the Empire Hotel, Reefton, on the 25th ultimo, a £lO note, No. B over C 5880, on the National Bank, and a cheque for £5 on the Bank of New Zealand, Greymouth, drawn by William McKekney in favour of complainant or bearer.

Greytown North, —Charles Arney, servant, Foresters’ Arms Hotel, reports stolen from his bedroom, between the Ist and 3rd instant, a cotton shirt, dark and white stripes, nearly new, and a new silk handkerchief, green and gold flowers; value 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a swagger, about twenty years of age, dark complexion, illlooking, small dark moustache, stooped shoulders, slight build, part of one ear apparently black or has a piece off; dressed in an old grey coat and hard-felt hat. Supposed to have gone to Martinborough or Featherston.
