Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1889, page 65.) Charles Parrant, charged on warrant with stealing cornsacks, the property of Robert Greenfield and Morgan S. Grace, from the City Tram Company’s sheds, Wellington, has been arrested by Constable John Coyle, Bull’s Police, and sentenced to fourteen days’ labour.

Robert Gardener is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with stealing, in June last, at Burnside, near Dunedin, about 561 b. of wool, value £2, the property of William Gatfield, and a bag containing about 481 b. of horsehair, value £2, the property of George Moslin. Description : A native of the colony, about twenty-one years of age, sft. 6in. or 7in. high, stout build, full face, fair complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved except fair moustache; dressed in dark-tweed sac-suit. He sold the horse-hair on the 15th ultimo, and the wool on the 28th or 29th ultimo, to Hugh Clelland, fellmonger, Caversham.

Stolen on the 2nd ultimo, from St. Thomas’s Church, Union Street, Freeman’s Bay, Auckland, a single-breasted dark-grey-tweed overcoat, size 3, dark-brown buttons, three outside pockets ; the property of Arthur Manning; value £1 10s. Identifiable. A man, name unknown, about thirtyfive or forty years of age, medium height and build, was seen leaving the church with the overcoat and an umbrella which was stolen at the same time.

Stolen between the 16th November and the 9th February last, from a house at Owen Junction, Westland, two common bullock-hide saddles ; the property of the estate of Michael Fagan, deceased ; value £2 each. Identifiable.

Stolen about the first week in May last, from Wellington Harbour, a whaleboat about 18ft. long, sft. B£in. beam, painted dark green on outside of top and red at bottom, had some new timbers put in, a seat round the stern, and a small hole bored through the keel near the bow ; the property of John Page ; value £6. Stolen on the 21st or 22nd ultimo, from Deadwood Terrace, Ponsonby, Auckland, a garden-gate, painted white, 3ft. 6in. by 3ft., three rails, and 4in. by 3in. kauri-timber side pieces, with round pins apart through the rails, two iron hinges ; the property of Frederick Jabez Bennett; value 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from the cooper’s workshop at Staples’s brewery, Murphy Street, Wellington, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Ehrhardt, London, No. 4504 or 45504, considerably worn; the property of Joseph Henry Higginbotham ; value £4 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from a cart in Willis Street, Wellington, a brown-paper parcel containing ten pairs of babies’ patent-leather shoes and a pair of ladies’ patentleather lace-up boots with high heels; the property of Messrs. Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, at Waikanae, Gisborne, a new swingletree, branded DM, a new set of plough-chains, and two ploughshares; the property of Denis Malone ; value £1 7s. 6d. Swingletree identifiable.

Stolen between the 20th and 25th ultimo, from the railway goods-shed, at Waitotara, Taranaki, a coil of galvanised fencing-wire ; the property of William Curry ; value 15s.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from the rear of the residence of Mrs. Lonquet, Worcester Street, Christchurch, a brownpaper parcel containing a boy’s dark-brown-tweed jacketvest; and knickerbockers, “J. Ballantyne & Co. ” woven in yellow silk on tab; the property of the New Zealand Clothing Factory; value £1 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a woman, name unknown, who was seen coming from the rear of the house. Description : About forty years of age, medium height, long thin neck, long prominent teeth; wore black dress, black shawl, and black-straw hat trimmed with velvet. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 28tli May last, at Mahakipawa, Marlborough, 2oz. Bdwt. of gold, amongst which was a round 4dwt. specimen about the size of a small marble, with a little brownish quartz in it; the property of James Norton ; value £8 18s. Specimen identifiable.

Stolen between the 3rd May last and the 27th ultimo, at Fiddler’s Flat, Blackstone Hill, St. Batlian’s, 747 rabbitskins ; the property of John Cochran; value £1 11s. ljd.

Stolen on the Ist or 2nd instant, from a clothes-line in Forth Street, Dunedin, two new twill-calico sheets, four plain-calico pillow-slips, two toilet-covers (one honeycomb and one crochet), two ladies’ nightdresses, two chemises, and an indian-muslin embroidered handkerchief; the property of Thomas Price and Mary G. White; value £2. Identifiable.

A small box, posted at Dunedin on the 4tli instant, addressed to “ G. andT. Young, Wellington,” has notreached its destination, and it is believed has been stolen. It contained

four diamonds, four sapphires, and a gentleman’s gold ring set with three diamonds and two sapphires ; the property of G. and T. Young ; value £2O. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from a conveyance between Otiake and Bugged Bidges, Oamaru District, a double-barrel breech-loading central-fire gun, top action, maker Mortimer, in good order ; the property of David Martin Wilson, since deceased ; value £l2. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 29th ultimo and sth instant, at Koru, Taranaki, three-quarters of a coil of barbed wire ; the property of John Partington ; value 16s.

Stolen about the 25th May last, from the Zealandia Skating Bink, Stanley Street, Auckland, a pair of skates, value 7s. 6d., since recovered ; the property of the Zealandia Skating Bink Company. The skates were pawned on the day they were stolen, at Asher’s pawn office, Queen Street, by a lad, who gave his name as Bobert Aiton. Description : About sixteen years of age, sft. 6in. high, fair complexion and hair ; dressed in light-grey-tweed coat, dark-grey-tweed trousers, and black-felt liat; respectable appearance. Stolen between the 2nd and sth instant, from a shed at Stanmore Boad, Limvood, near Christchurch, a set of silvermounted trap-harness, well worn, consisting of blinkers with silver crown and buckles, common-leather collar, patentleather saddle mounted with silver, bellyband repaired on right side with a piece of boot-lace, breeching with shaftstraps missing, reins and crupper; the property of Walter Cotterill; value about £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th instant, from the premises of Matthew Weir, West Town Belt, Christchurch, a new double-sheet with the hem at one end ljin. wide and at the other end wide, a single sheet, a good deal worn, hemmed in a similar manner to the double one, an old reddish-check shirt, and two hind-quarters and two loins of mutton; value £l. Sheets and shirt identifiable.

Stolen on the 9th or 10th instant, from the door of the shop of Henry Charles Hazelden, Cuba Street, Wellington, a medium-sized plain coir door-mat, torn at both ends on under side ; value 7s. 6d. Supposed identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th instant, from on board the steamer “ Charles Edwards,” at the Queen’s Wharf, Wellington, a new double-breasted yellow-oilskin overcoat; value £1; since recovered ; the property of Thomas Whitwell, master of the steamer. It was pawned on the 11th instant, at Metz’s pawn office, Willis Street, by a man who gave his name as Henry Johnson. Description: Supposed English, about thirty-three years of age, about sft. 9in. or lOin. high, medium build, brown hair, clean-shaved except brownish moustache ; wore a single-breasted dark shabby overcoat, and brown soft-felt hat.
