Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Between 9.45 p.m. on die 11th and 2 p.m. on the 12th ultimo the shop of Albert Berger, Te Aroha, was broken into, and the following stolen : A gold open-face lever watch, No. 21503 ; two silver open-face lever watches, Nos. 1049 and 3719 ; a silver hunting lever watch, No. 8798 ; a gold open-face Geneva watch, case broken, number not. known; a silver hunting lever watch, No. 3359; two Waterbury watches, the case of a gold hunting keyless watch, No. 60622; a silver hunting lever watch, No. 29097; a silver hunting lever watch, No. 24490 ; a silver hunting Geneva keyless watch, No. 78692, and silver chain ; a silver hunting lever watch, No. ; two silver watches, numbers not known ; three gold-mounted greenstone pendants, a silver-mounted greenstone pendant, a silver chain, a silver necklace, a silver pencil-case, a giltbrass chain, a pair of silver earrings, a silver brooch, a brass scarf-pin, postage-stamp pattern ; all value £6O. Identifiable. Nearly all the watches stolen were left with Mr. Berger for repair. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, supposed English, about twenty-seven years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, medium build, round-shouldered, pale sun-burned complexion, full brown eyes, thin brown whiskers and moustache, chin shaved ; wore a shabby faded brown-tweed coat, grey-flannel shirt with turndown collar, and old black-felt hat.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the shop-door of F. D. Woodroffe, Masterton, 16 yards of fawn-coloured Chinese silk ; value £1 13s. 6d. Identification doubtful.

Between 4 p.m. on the 11th and 9 a.m. on the 13th ultimo the dwelling of Herbert Southey, Hawera, was broken into, and the following stolen: A pair of ladies’ new elastic-side kid boots with patent-leather toe-caps, size 4 ; a pair of ladies’ brown-silk and cotton gloves, four pairs of ladies’ black-kid gloves nearly worn out, and a pair of ladies’ old leather slippers ; value 12s. Identifiable,

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the sliop-door of Burchard Franzen, the Port, Nelson, a chesterfield mackintosh, size 3,52 in. long, the inside is of a different pattern to the outside ; value £2 7s. Identifiable.

All the property,. except the gold ring, stolen from the hotel of John Larkin, Patea, has been recovered by the Wanganui Police, and traced to the possession of William Baird Drummond, alias William Baird, alias William Henry Drummond, who was suspected of the offence. A cap and muffler stolen at the same time have also been recovered. He was arrested on the 16th ultimo by Acting Sergeant William Manning, Palmerston North Police, on a charge of larceny, and sentenced to one month’s labour.

Stealing jewellery, &c., from the boardinghouse of John Owens, Beach Road, Devonport: The wedding-ring and gold locket have been recovered. They were found in the house. The luggage of Arthur Gaskell and his wife, who were suspected, was searched by the Russell Police, but none of the stolen property was found. They left Opua on the 16th ultimo by the steamer “ Manapouri” for Sydney.

A man, name unknown, is charged with stealing, about 3.30 p.m. on the 25th ultimo, from the shop of Crem Low, John Street, Wellington, a chocolate-tin containing £1 10s. in silver and copper. Description: Supposed a native of the colony, about twenty years of age, sft. Sin. or 6in. high, medium build, dark hair, believed to have no hair on face; dressed in brown-tweed suit and soft brown (supposed tweed) hat. Identifiable.

Breaking into the post office at Feilding, and stealing a safe containing money, &c., the property of the Government: The safe also contained a cheque for £2 4s. Gd., dated the 18th April last, No. A 41952, drawn by Percival Reid on the Bank of Australasia, Feilding.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the dwelling of Jeremiah Edward Slieahon, Aramoho, near Wanganui, a very long single-breasted dark Irish-frieze overcoat, one breast-and two side-pockets, slit at back for riding with three or four buttons, in the pockets were 2s. 3d., a silver ring with square and compass engraved thereon, and a match-box with spring containing a flattened sixpence, a fourpenny piece, and a five-cent. French coin; value £4. Coat and ring identifiable.

Stolen on the 21st ultimo, from the dwelling of Joseph Bartlett, Upper Tutaenui, near Marton, a shell-box, value Is., containing nine £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, £1 ss. in silver, and lOd. in coppers. The shell-box has been recovered ; it was found outside the gate leading from Mr. Bartiett’s house. Suspicion attached to a swagman, name unknown, a German, about forty years of age, sft. Bin. high, medium build, very brown complexion, reddish hair, long red beard, moustache and whiskers short; dressed in a shabby torn brown suit and a grey-tweed cap torn on crown ; carried a swag in a sack. He is supposed to have gone to Hunterville.

Stolen on the 15tli ultimo, from the shop of Edward Davis, Hawksbury, a show-case, lOin. by 6in., with glass top, containing eight 2in. bottles of Senior’s marking-ink and three tins of vaseline-camphorine ; value 10s. Identification doubtful.

Stolen on the 6th ultimo, from the tap-room of the Occidental Hotel, Vulcan Street, Auckland, two pairs of men’s Balmoral watertight-boots, size 6 ; the property of David Stevenson; value £1 3s. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, who was with complainant in the tap-room. Description: Between twenty-five and thirty years of age, sft. sin. or 6in. high, medium build, fair complexion, fair moustache only, had a black eye; wore dirty grey-tweed suit Supposed identifiable.

Stolen on the 11th ultimo, from Kidd’s Commercial Hotel, Shortland Street, Auckland, a dark tliree-quarter-sized overcoat, two side pockets and a small ticket-pocket, lining torn out of sleeves, value £1 10s. ; in the pockets were a white-silk handkerchief marked GFB 29-4-89, a pair of light-brown riding-gloves, and a cherry-wood cigar-holder, value 12s. 6d.; the property of George Frederick Brimblecombe. Identifiable.

Stolen on the night of the 30th April last, from the dwelling of Arthur Couglilan, Penrose, near Onehunga, a plain gold ring with imitation-diamond in claw-setting, value £1 55.; a ladies’ plain gold ring with three imitationdiamonds set in circular rims, value £1; an 18-carat gold albert watch-guard, pattern long links connected by three small ones, a common watch-key attached, value £4; a silver-plated steel spur, value 3s. ; and some silver coins with holes through them. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 2nd ultimo, from the shop of Eliza Taylor, Armagh Street, Christchurch, a new small dark-grey-tweed vest; value 3s. Gd. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, between twenty and thirty years of age, sft. llin. high, slight build, fair complexion, and small fair moustache ; dressed in dark sac-coat, buttoned high at neck, and hard black-felt hat. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the loth ultimo, from the person of George Wright, while drunk, in Colombo Street, Christchurch, a pocketbook containing seven £5 notes and twenty £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand, and two receipts. Pocketbook and receipts identifiable.

Stealing money, &c., from a hut at Avenal, near Invercargill, the property of Daniel Coakley and Samuel Shaw : Pour youths, named Stephen Keys, Frederick Keys, William Hanna, and Charles Edward McCreath, have been arrested for these offences by Acting Detective William Maddern and Constable John Buchanan, Invercargill Police. Stephen Keys was sentenced to receive six strokes with a birch rod, and the others were discharged. The imitation-gold chain has been recovered.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the shop-door of Elizabeth Dunn, Karangahape Road, Auckland, a ladies’ tightfitting grey-curly-cloth ulster with deep black-plush collar and cuffs ; value £1 7s. Identifiable.

Between the 22nd and 2Gth April last the dwelling of Arnold Berclidoll, Frankish’s Lane, off St. Asaph Street, Christchurch, was broken into, and two £1 notes on the National Bank, about £1 10s. in silver, and about 2s. 6d. in coppers stolen.

Stolen between the 22nd and 28th ultimo, from a bedroom in Cox’s Temperance Hotel, Maclaggan Street, Dunedin, a gentlemen’s gold diamond ring, star-setting; a gentlemen’s gold carbuncle ring, a round gold brooch with gold loop so that it can be worn as a locket, and a pair of gold-mounted jet earrings ; the property of Emily Robbeds; value £ls - -

Stolen on or about the 14th ultimo, from the Central Hotel, Christchurch, a silver necklet and locket, since recovered ; value 15s. ; the property of Jessie Mitchel Patten. Suspicion attached to a man who gave his name as Thomas Thompson, who sold the necklet and locket to a youth named George Kelly on the Papanui Road. Description: Alabourer, about fifty years of age, sft. Gin. or 7in. high, brown beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in dark clothes ; supposed to have been recently employed digging potatoes at Styx for a Mr. Wilson. Identifiable. He was last seen in Christchurch on the 16th ultimo.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the hut of Emanuel Thompson, Growler’s Flat, Upper Waikaia, a keg containing about 201 b. salt butter ; value £l.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the shop-door of James Smith Goldie, Dee Street, Invercargill, four union shirts, black-, blue-, and white-check pattern, a small piece of tape marked “Tapu” round them; value 12s. Identifiable by mark on tape.
