Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.
Louis Diehl is charged, on warrant issued by the Oamaru Bench, with stealing, on the 28th December last, at Black Forest, an order for the payment of £7 Bs. 3d., since recovered ; the property of Richard Lawrence. Description: Supposed a native of . the colony, a labourer, nineteen years of age, about sft. Sin. or 9in. high, slight build, dark complexion, clarx hair, no hair on face except very small black moustache, mole on upper lip ; dressed in dark-tweed sac-suit and brown soft-tweed hat with twisted-cord hand. He left Oamaru on the /'3rd ultimo by the afternoon train for Herbert, where his parents reside. He was summoned for the offence, but he failed to appear.
Stolen about tlio 3rd December last, from the scene of a fire at Tamamu, near Waipawa, twelve large solid-silver tablespoons marked S, a silver snuffers and tray witb carving thereon, and a silver or silver-plated wine-strainer, identifiable ; also a number of other articles of silver, partly destroyed and marked F, and some melted silver, supposed identifiable ; the property of John S. Fleming.
Stolen on the 19tli ultimo, from the harness-room of tne Newmarket Hotel stables, Wanganui, a bit and bridoon. bridle without the bits; was originally a double-reined snaffle-bridle, but the bridoon headstall has been addedthe property of James Watkins ; value £1 ss. Suspicion attached to William Haggit, a native of Wanganui a jockey, nineteen years of age, about sft. 2in. high, medium build, light incipient whiskers ; walks a little lame on right leg. Stolen oil the 14th or 15th ultimo, from a workshop in King Street, Dunedin, two pairs of medium-sized pinchers, four gouges, sizes fin., fin., lin., and If in., round wooden handles; two screwdrivers with round wooden handles, and some carpenters’ wooden gauges, “ G. Swan ” stamped on the handles of some of the articles; the property of Robert Francis and George Swan; value 18s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 12th or 13th ultimo, from the yard of Eliza Carr, Athol Place, Dunedin, three ladies’ calico nightdresses with embroidery round neck, cuffs, and down the front; value 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 10th or 11th instant, from off a fence at Anderston, Roslyn, near Dunedin, an iron chain about 2ft. long, twisted links about lin. long, and a medium-sized padlock with two key-holes, one false ; the property of William Wright; value ss. Identifiable.
Stolen between the 13th and 16th ultimo, from the stable of Patrick O’Shannessy, Winton Bush, Southland, a saddle, well-worn, recently patched on the flaps with new leather, some rough stitches in one knee-pad, a piece broken off one of girth-straps under flap, one of the stirrup-leathers is knotted and is sewn roughly near the knot where it is broken ; value £3. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from off a fence in Constable Street, Wellington, a blue pilot-cloth overcoat, not much worn, seven button-holes in front, the lower one is sewn with dark-brown thread, three brown spots on lower button; the property of Job Pinfold ; value £1 15s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the milk-cart of Osborn Orsborn, in Wallace Street, Wellington, a ten-quart milk-can, brass hinge to lid ; value 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 25th or 26th ultimo, from the carpenter’s shop of Thomas Goodwin, Otahuliu, three hand-saws, a tenon-saw, a brace and five bits, a jack-plane, a smoothingplane, a hammer, an oil-stone, six chisels, a 2-foot-rule, and a square; the saws and planes are branded TC; value £3 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 17th ultimo, at the Volunteer Camp, Domain, Devonport, Auckland, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker McDonald, Stirling, No. 3777, attached was a curbpattern brass chain, gilt, and a gold star-shaped medal (a rowing trophy) with “Champion Gig” on one side and the names of the crew, including David Miller’s name, on the reverse ; the property of David Miller; value £ll. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 18th or 19th ultimo, from a shed at Forbury Road, St. Clair, near Dunedin, a pair of five-plated dog-cart springs, 4ft. long, holes drilled in each end, and two half axles with brass caps ; the property of Alfred Groves ; value £3. Springs identifiable.
Stolen between the Ist November last and the 26th ultimo, at Spring Creek, near the Twelve-mile, Westland, a coil of telegraph wire, about 1401 b. weight; the property of the Government; value £1 ss. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 6th ultimo, at Mangawai, Bay of Islands District, a black-and-white check vest, in one of the pockets of which -were eight £1 notes and 10s. in silver ; the property of Joseph Androcus. Vest identifiable.
Stolen on the 6th or 7th ultimo, from off the wharf at Parua Bay, Bay of Islands District, seven sacks of kauri gum, six of the sacks are marked S and the other S/B; the property of Robert Mitchell Smith ; value £2O. Sacks identifiable.
Stolen on the 26th or 27th ultimo, at Meeanee, Hawke’s Bay, a leather belt 30ft. long and about 4in. wide, and two leather belts about 12ft. and Bft. long respectively, and about 3in. wide ; had been used on a chaff-cutting machine ; the property of Robert Hannah ; value £4. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 23rd ultimo, from the dressing-room at the grand stand, Potter’s paddock, Epsom, Auckland, an open-faced silver lever watch, maker’s name not known, No. 8400, gold hands, and a gold albert chain, plain long links connected by three small links ; the property of Robert Collins ; value £6 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 23rd January last, from the auction-mart of B. Tonks and Co., Queen Street, Auckland, two ladies’ sandal-wood card-cases, one inlaid with silver, and the other
richly carved; value 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a woman, name unknown, about thirty years of age, medium height and build, red face, well-dressed. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 6th ultimo, from the auction-mart of B. Tonks and Co., Queen Street, Auckland, a richly-carved new sandal-wood paper-weight with ivory knob ; value ss. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 28tli ultimo, from the stable of the Bridge Hotel, Kaitangat-a, an open-face silver lever watch, maker Hugh Aitkin, Stranraer, Scotland, No. 51512, steel chain attached; the property of William Bradley; value £4. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 4th instant from the reclaimed land, Wellington, a spirit-level, value 4s. 6d., since recovered; the property of James Bradley. The level was pledged at Metz’s pawn office on the day it was stolen by a man who gave his name as James King, which may be a fictitious name. Description : Supposed English, about forty years of age, sft. 4in. high, dark hair, clean-shaved except moustache ; wore dark clothes and soft black-felt hat. Identifiable.
Stolen on the 2nd instant, [from off a horse in Ridgway Street, Wanganui, a common bullock-hide colonial-made saddle, common web-girth, very little worn, and an old common single-rein snaffle-bridle without throat-band; the property of John White ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.
Stolen on the Ist instant, from a box in the transit-shed, at the wharf, Greymouth, or on board the steamer “ Waipara,” a light-plaid coat and vest, small-check pattern; two black-twill flannel shirts, sleeves cut short; a white cotton shirt, marked “ Sydney ” in black and red ; three pairs of new green-and-black woollen socks, an imitation - gold albert chain, eight long links with three small links between the long ones, attached was an imitation-gold locket with a horse-shoe on one side and a man’s likeness on the other side ; and a pair of blucher boots with three eyelet holes in each, newly half-soled, no nails ; the property of James Kennedy; value about £B. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to the crew of the steamer “ Waipara.”

The gold watch and chain, the property of Edwin Lusher, stolen from on board the barque “ Conference,” at Lyttelton, have been recovered, and John Black arrested for stealing them by Detective Maurice O’Connor, Christchurch Police, and sentenced to seven days’ labour.
Stolen between the 27th ultimo and 4th instant, from the railway goods-shed, at Pukekohe, a bag of bone-dust, bag marked CK over M within circle; the property of Charles Kavanagh ; value 16s. Bag identifiable.
Stolen on the 4th or sth instant, from a stable, at St. Martin’s, near Christchurch, a set of black-leather lightpony harness with silver-plated buckles, about two years in use, collar fastened with two straps and buckles, brass hames, one of the reins cracked on off side near the bit; and a buggy-rug, one side black and the other side black and grey ; the property of George Henry Sharp ; value £5. Identifiable.
Stolen on the sth instant, from the yard of the Junction Hotel, Oarnaru, a swag, consisting of a red-striped rug, a pair of new elastic-side boots with thirteen preservers in soles and heels, a pair of serge trousers, a pair of tweed trousers, a pair of white-moleskin trousers, two pairs of merino socks, a pair of worsted socks, a silk handkerchief with red stripe, a pair of merino drawers, a pair of blucher hoots, well worn, and a pair of balmoral boots, well worn ; all in a small sugar-bag and fastened with three straps ; the property of James Ritchie ; value £3. Identifiable.
