Deserting Wives and Families, &c.

(See Police Gazette, 1889, page 20.) Robert Brown, charged on warrant with deserting his children, at Lyttelton, has been arrested by Constable James Weatherley, Bealey Police, and sentenced to three months’ labour.

Cecil Pascoe, alias John Cecil Pascoe, charged on warrant with intending to desert his wife, at Wellington, has been arrested by Constable Frank Schulz, Herbertville Police, and ordered to pay 12s. 6d. per week towards the support of his wife and family.

Daniel Davis is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with deserting his wife and four children, at Wellington, since the 6th November last. Description: Irish, a sailor and labourer, thirty-four years of age, sft. high, fair complexion, fair hair, usually clean-shaved except fair moustache, blue eyes; BMcD in wreath and flags tattooed on left arm, star on left hand, and Maltese cross on right wrist. He is an old offender. (See Police Gazette, 1888, page 206.) He left Napier early in January last, supposed for Wellington by way of Masterton.

George Stanborough, charged on warrant of commitment to gaol in default of paying £1 135., fine and costs, for a breach of the Dog Registration Act, has been arrested by Constable W. J. Simpson, Leeston Police.

Amended description of William John Leybourne, charged on warrant with deserting his two children : Dark eyes, very sallow complexion, has been deaf for many years and wears American patent drums in his ears, the wires of which are visible on close inspection; of miserly habits; English accent. He was employed as a clerk in the Railway Department at Christchurch in 1879, and subsequently at clerical work for the Audit Department, Wellington, and afterwards as canvasser for a Wellington firm. While in Christchurch he was a member of the Wesleyan Church choir and a prominent member of the Young Men’s Christian Association. He has testimonials from an English railway company, and will likely seek employment on a railway, or as a clerk or canvasser. He may have assumed another name.

Otto Reinkie absconded from the Caversham Industrial School on the 10th instant. Description : A native of Melbourne, thirteen and a half years of age, 4ft. lOin. high, fair freckled complexion, brown hair and eyes, short broad nose, large mouth with projecting lips and teeth, mark of cut on right cheek and blue clot on right hand, remarkable appearance ; dressed in Mosgiel-tweed suit, brown-tweecl twilled hat, and lace-up boots. He previously absconded from the school in September, 1887, and was arrested by the Lawrence Police after committing several offences. Pie was sentenced at Gore on the loth February, 1888, to three months’ labour for stealing from a dwelling, and at Invercargill on the 17th April last to nine months’ labour for breaking and entering. (See Police Gazette, 1888, pages 78 and 244.) He appears to be wanting in intelligence, but is a low cunning thief.

James Mackie, charged on warrant with failing to support his four illegitimate children, has been arrested by Detective William L. Chrystal, Wellington Police.

John Thomas Taylor is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with disobeying an order, since the Ist instant, to pay 7s. a week towards the support of his wife. Description : English, a painter, twenty-three years of age, about sft. 6in. or 7in. high, slight build, dark complexion, dark-brown hair, clean-shaved except small dark moustache and side whiskers, brown eyes, mark of scar under chin; usually wears dark sac-suit and black hard hat. He was seen in Wellington on the 14th instant. He has an uncle named Taylor living in Ashburton, and a friend named Lethaby, living in High Street, Christchurch.

Samuel Berg is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with disobeying an order, since the 26th ultimo, to pay 15s. per week towards the support of his wife and child. Description: A native of the colony, a bootmaker, sometimes employed as a waiter or billiard-marker, twenty-six years of age, sft. 6-Jin. high, medium build, fresh complexion, dark-blue eyes, brown hair, clean-shaved except light-brown moustache ; dressed in brown-tweed suit and drab soft-felt hat. He was sentenced at Wellington on the 19th November last to two months’ imprisonment for failing to support his wife, and was discharged from gaol on the 18tli ultimo. Mary Abbott is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with deserting her child, Henry Abbott, at Christchurch, since the 14th instant. Description : English, about twenty-eight or thirty years of age, very low stature, slight figure, round face, fresh complexion, brown

eyes, straight nose, dark-brown hair, fringe on forehead ; dresses well. She was employed as housemaid at the Canterbury Hotel, Lyttelton, but left there on the 13th instant and went to Christchurch, and has not been seen there since the following day. She is supposed to have gone to Timaru or Dunedin.
