A man, only known as Harry, is charged with uttering a forged cheque for £7 9s. to H. McLean, hotelkeeper, Amberley, at about 7 p.m. on the 20th October last. Description : Supposed English, a labourer, about forty years of age, about sft. 4in. or sin. high, stout build, fair hair turning grey, clean-shaved except small fair side whiskers and moustache tinged with grey, broad heavy features, pugnacious expression ; dressed in dark-grey check-tweed suit, round grey-tweed hat or a tweed cap, and new blucher boots. The cheque is drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Amberley, in favour of Henry Strange, and purports to be signed by

Robert Sloper, of Glasnevin, near Amberley. Offender worked for Mr. Sloper up to the 20th October last, on which date he was discharged, and paid his wages by cheque. A man answering his description was seen going towards Ashley Bank about noon, two days after. .

Arthur Thomas Eyre is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with having, on the 20th August last, at Auckland, uttered a forged promissory-note for £3B 4s. sd. to Wingate, Burns, and Co. Description: English, a produce merchant, lately in business in Queen Street, forty-two years of age, sft. Tin. or Sin. high, medium build, florid complexion, black hair, and moustache only, had black beard and whiskers, but he recently shaved them off, slightly bowlegged ; dressed in dark-tweed suit and hard black hat; dissipated appearance. He left Auckland on the 2nd ultimo, supposed for Port Albert, where he has relatives. Ho is endeavouring to leave the colony. The promissory-note purports to be signed by Samuel Frederick Boler, storekeeper, Tawhoa.

r John Hall is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with obtaining, on the 9th ultimo, at Waikanac, the sum of £lO from Harriet Anderson by false representations. Description : A native of Ireland, a clerk and bushman, about thirty years of age;’sft. Sin. high, medium build, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache ; dressed in browntweed coat and trousers, black-cloth vest, and black softfelt hat. ; He was employed for about six months previously as a clerk at Mr. Hunt’s sawmill, Waikanae. ( He represents that he has £1,500 to his credit in a bank at Wellington. He was seen at Featlierston on the 28th ultimo.,'/-

F. Stone is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with uttering, on the Bth ultimo, to Charles Sandeman, in the Golden Fleece Hotel, Colombo Street, Christchurch, a forged cheque for £7. Description : A Russian Finn, a sailor, about thirty-eight years of age, sft. 9in. high, slight build, dark complexion and eyes, black liairj clean-shaved except black moustache; dressed in blue diagonal pagct-coat, dark-tweed trousers and vest, and black soft-felt hat; speaks broken English. He has worked in the bays on Banks Peninsula. The cheque is on the Union Bank of Australia, and purports to be signed by W. P. Andrews, of Green Park, in whose employment the offender said he was.

John Hall is charged, on warrant issued by the Otaki Bench, with obtaining, on the 9th ultimo, at Otaki, a cheque for £5 from John Ryder by false pretences. Description: A native of Ireland, a bushman, thirty-four years of age, sft. Gin. high, slight build, fresh complexion, brown eyes, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache. He left Otaki on the 10th ultimo for Wellington. He is identical with John Hall, previously referred to, charged on warrant with obtaining £lO from Harriet Anderson, at Waikanae, by false representations. He was seen at Featlierston on the 28th ultimo.

Edward Phipps is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with having, on the 6th and Bth instant, at Stanmore Road, Richmond, near Christchurch, embezzled the sums of 16s. 10d., £1 18s. Sd., and £2 10s., the moneys of Joseph Broadley, by whom he was employed as a baker and collector of accounts, &c. Description: A native of England, a baker, twenty-four years of age, sft. Sin. or 9in. high, medium build, ruddy complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved except fair moustache; wore black-cloth suit and hard black hat; respectable appearance ; fond of drink. He has a brother a baker and storekeeper at the Bay of Islands. He said he was previously employed by Mr. Pane, a baker at Ponsonby, near Auckland. He is supposed to have left Lyttelton on the Bth instant by the steamer “ Ohau ” for Sydney. There are several similar charges against him.

Michael French is charged, on warrant issued by the Lawrence Bench, with having, on the 22nd ultimo, at Rae’s Junction, near Lawrence, uttered a forged cheque for £4 15s. to Isabella Rae. Description : Irish, a labourer, about thirty years of age, sft. 7in. high, medium build, dark complexion, dark hair, dark beard whiskers and moustache worn short; dressed in old darlc-tweed coat, vest, and trousers, and tweed hat; carried a swag in a sack. The cheque is drawn on the Colonial Bank, Lawrence, in favour of Michael French, and purports to he signed by John Carr. He/said that he had been employed at Beaumont Station, and that he got the cheque from the manager. Mr. Kerr is the manager’s name at Beaumont. He went towards Teviot Station, Roxburgh, on the 22nd ultimo.

William Pearce is charged, on warrant issued by the Kawakawa Bench, with having, on the 12th ultimo, at Ngawlia, Ohaeawai, obtained goods, value £2, from William Goffe by false representations. Description : An American, a gumdigger, about thirty years of age, sft. Bin. or 9in. high, 11 stone weight, dark complexion and eyes, dark beard whiskers and moustache; wore blue-serge shirt; fond of drink. He is supposed to have gone to the Hukerimu Gumfields or to the Kamo Mines.

John Rushworth is charged, on warrant issued by the Reefton Bench, with having, on the 2nd instant, at Reefton, obtained a silver lever hunting-watch, value £7, from Thomas Wanless Bruce by false representations. Description : English, thirty-eight years of age, but looks much younger, about sft. sin. high, slight build, thin features, florid complexion, left eye much smaller than right, fair hair, sandy beard whiskers and moustache cut short; dressed in darktweed sac-suit and tweed hat. He falsely represented himself as a Government geologist, and by so doing obtained the watch. There are other charges against him. He is supposed to have gone to Greymoutli.

A man, who gave his name as Thomas Taylor, which may be a fictitious name, is charged with uttering, on the sth instant, to William Henry Conlan, in the Criterion Hotel, Gloucester Street, Christchurch, a forged cheque for £4 on the Bank of New Zealand. Description: Supposed Irish, looked like an engineer, twenty or twenty-one years of age, sft. 9in. or lOin. high, fair complexion, fair hair, clean-shaved except very small fair moustacho; dressed in dark-tweed suit, darkcheck overcoat with cape, a large silver button at top, and soft black-felt hat ; respectable appearance. Identifiable. The cheque is signed “ Thomas Taylor,” whom offender said is his father, and that he was employed at the railway-work-shops, Addington, but there is no person of the name employed there. Offender went into the hotel with two prostitutes, and uttered the cheque in payment for three drinks and a package of cigarettes, receiving £3 18s. in cash. He indorsed the cheque, “ Thomas Taylor.”

Between 5.30 p.m. on the Bth and 8 a.m. on the 10th instant, at Caversham, near Timaru, twelve fruit-trees, ten macrocarpas, and four gooseberry- and currant-bushes were maliciously broken down, and a quantity of potatoes and cabbages, &c., pulled out of the ground ; the property of William Ingram ; thereby doing damage to the extent of £3 7s. 6d.
