Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

(See Police Gazette, 1887, page 20.) Robert Kent, alias Silas Kent, charged on warrant with assaulting and robbing Thomas Mitchell, has been arrested by Detective Austin Kirby, Timaru Police, and remanded to Christchurch.

John Glover is charged, on warrant issued by the Napier Bench, with stealing, on the 15th ultimo, from the shop-door of Spencer George Radford, Hastings Street, Napier, four or five pairs of men’s white-cotton drawers, since recovered; value about 16s. Description: Irish, a labourer, fifty-one years of age, Gft. sin. high, medium huild, fresh complexion, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache worn short and mixed with grey, slightly stooped; dressed in light-tweed suit and black soft felt hat. He was seen at Meanee on the 16th ultimo. On the 12th May, 1879, he was sentenced at Napier to six months’ labour for larceny. (See Police Gazette, 1879, page 202.)

Joseph Jackson is charged, on warrant issued by the Masterton Bench, with stealing, between the 2nd and 26th ultimo, from the dwelling of Patrick Mahoney, at Masterton, three blankets, a quilt, a sheet, two kettles, three saucepans, a tin billy, a clock, a looking-glass, two saws, a candlestick, a sharpening-stone, and two butchers’ knives; value £1; since recovered. Description : English, a wheelwright, about forty-five years of age, sft. 9in. or sft. lOin. high, medium build, very round-shouldered, dark complexion, dark hair, small dark beard and moustache, something the matter with one of his eyes, and one of his hands injured as if it had been broken across the back.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the dwelling of Joseph Johnstone, Northcote, near Auckland, a sack containing about lewt. of kauri gum; value £2 10s. Most of the gum identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from tho dwelling of F. L. Prime, Anglesea Street, Auckland, a pair of binocular marine-glasses, large size, morocco and black enamel, “ Marine ” stamped on small end, the morocco on one of the slides on the large end is loose, and some of the cogs on the wheel which regulates the sight are broken ; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

James Anderson Skoy is charged with stealing, on the 24th ultimo, from the shop of John Edward Evans, Lambtou Quay, Wellington, a carriage-whip, value 12s. 6d., since recovered. Description: A Dane, a carpenter, forty-two years of age, sft. B£in. high, stout build, fair complexion, light-brown hair whiskers and moustache, chin shaved, large nose mouth and chin, AIS, CIS, lAS, CAS, 1857, and part of wreath tattooed on right arm, scar over left temple and on left arm; dressed in grey-tweed sac-suit and grey-tweed hat. He sold the whip on the day it was stolen to George W. Smart, pawnbroker, Manners Street. He was discharged from Wellington Gaol on the 12th ultimo, after undergoing two sentences for larceny. Warrant for his arrest to issue.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the shop of Charles Brown, Adelaide Road, Wellington, a half-sovereign.

Stolen on the 15th ultimo, from the office of James Linton, Palmerston North, a presentation address in ebonized frame, about 20in. by 15in., with gilt border ; value £l2. Identifiable. The address was presented to Mr. Linton about three months ago.

Stolen on the 10th ultimo, from the bar of the Ship Hotel, Willis Street, Wellington, a ladies’ gold broach, pattern two bars with horseshoe in centre, about twelve small pearls set in horseshoe and three larger ones in the centre of the broach, pin missing; the property of Nellie Townsend ; value £3 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth ultimo, from a box in the dwelling of Richard Washington Webb, Brenchley Road, Lyttelton, a £1 note and a sovereign.

About 2 a.m. on the 13th ultimo an outhouse in Wordsworth Street, Wellington, the property of John Skelly, was broken into, and a nearly-new large white blanket, value £l, and two children’s print calico dresses, value 15s. each, stolen. Dresses identifiable. Eight cwt. of coals, value 155., were stolen at the same time from tho yard.

Between 10.30 p.m. on the 16th and 6 a.m. on the 17th ultimo the premises of William James Pallant, Cuba Street, Wellington, were burglariously entered, and the following stolen: A cash-box containing between £36 and £4O

in notes, gold, and silver; a cheque for £1 15s. on the Bank of New South Wales, drawn by Hazelden, bookseller, Cuba Street, in favour of Mr. Pallant; a National Bank book, Te Aro Branch ; a' bundle of cancelled cheques on the National Bank, Te Aro ; a cheque-book on the Bank of Australasia, a few cheques used out of it, the first date is tho 22nd January, 1885, a pair of black-kid gloves, and an English farthing, dated 1875. Also a writing-desk, containing a policy for £SOO in the Accident Insurance Office, and two policies for £SO and £250 against fire in tho Phoenix Office. Identifiable, except notes, gold, and silver. The writing-desk was found broken open in the yard of the premises, and the cash-box was found broken open in a paddock off Tory Street; it contained the Accident Insurance policy, the fire-in-surance policy for £SO, tho pair of gloves, and a number of receipts and bills.

Stealing money in the dwelling of William Smyth, at Oamaru: Mary Black, suspected of this offence, was convicted of stealing a £1 note in tho same dwelling on the 12th ultimo, and sentenced to two months’ probation under “ The First Offenders’ Probation Act, 1886.”

Stolen between 9 p.m. on the 30th January last and 6 p.m. on tho 2nd ultimo, from the dwelling of Annie Strangman, Cheltenham Road, Devonport, a silver bracelet inlaid with gold, with engraving like the leaves of a tree on centre of gold ; value £2 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the 25th and 29th January last, from the hut of John Luke Lynch, at Burke’s, near Dunedin, a gold ruby and diamond ring, value £4 4s. ; and 11s. 6d. in silver. Ring identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 14th ultimo, from off the counter in the book-shop of John Watts, Willis Street, Wellington, a black-leather pocketbook with four compartments and elastic band, containing two letters, some visiting-cards, a promissory note for £ls, seven £1 notes, and a return-ticket by steamer to Akaroa; the property of William B. Tosswill. Identifiable, except money. The pocketbook and contents, except the money, were found on the morning of the 15th ultimo near the opera-house, Manners Street.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the shop-window of Philip A. Rive, Cuba Street, Wellington, a single-breasted black-worsted sac-suit, full size ; value £2 12s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the person of Henry Thomas, while drunk, at Christchurch, a silver lever hunt-ing-watch, maker Rotherham, No. 2725, and a steel albert chain, value £4 10s.; a £1 note, and about 10s. in silver. Watch identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th or 11th ultimo, from the person of James Ruthven Grant, while drunk in tho house of John Edwards, Game Hen Gully, Lee Stream, Otago, a brown folding indiarubber tobacco-pouch, containing a twelvemonths’ fixed-deposit receipt for £725 on the Bank of New Zealand, Dunedin, due in about nine months hence ; three £5 notes on tho Bank of New Zealand, three £1 notes, a half-sovereign, Bs. or 10s. in silver, a miner’s right for 1887 in the name of James Grant, a receipt for £1 Is. 6d. from Ross and McNeill of Dunedin, and a number of other receipts. Tobacco-pouch and papers identifiable.

Stolen on tho 16th ultimo, from a cash-box in the office of W. G. Mitchell, Cuba Street, Wellington, four £1 notes and Bs. in silver. Suspicion attached to two spielers, names unknown. Description: First, about eighteen years of age, sft. 7in. or Bin. high, medium build, broad shoulders, fresh full face, small fair moustache. He may be identical with David McLean, alias John lies, charged on warrant with having assaulted John Wing, at Dunedin. (See Police Gazette, 1886, page 223.) Second, about thirty years of age, sft. Sin. high, medium build, dark complexion, and dark moustache.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from the person of Amelia Barnes, Taranaki Street, Wellington, a ladies’ silver huntingwatch, maker’s name and number not known, case machineturned with a shield in centre of each side, value £3 ; and a ladies’ silver guard, plain in the middle and horseshoe links towards the end, with silver tassel attached, value £l. Both identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Leeston Hotel, Leeston, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker’s name and number not known, a small dent in outside case, a silver chain, long-link pattern with flowers on links ; an imitation half-sovereign, shilling, and farthing attached to ohain; the property of Ellen Weirs ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 4th or sth ultimo, from the shop of James Martin, Wakefield Street, Auckland, a black single-breasted vest; value £l. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Simpson, alias Hawker. (For his description, &c., see Police Gazette , 188 G, page 208.)

Stolen on the 9th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Occidental Hotel, Auckland, a double-eased small silver Geneva watch, maker supposed Rositter, Dunedin, number not known; the property of Phoebe O’Hara ; value £4. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 16th ultimo, from the dwelling of Gerald Loftus Peacock, Cheltenham Beach, Devonport, a gold ring set with five rather large pearls in shape of a star with diamond points in the angles, value £lO ; a gold snake ring, three coils, two small ruby eyes in head, “ G. L. P. and E. M., 16th August, 1875,” engraved on inside, value £3 ; a broad gold enamelled mourning-ring, old-fashioned pattern, “ In memory of Charles Lord Senterden,” with date of death, engraved on inside, value £2; an oval locket, about lin. by l£in., bordered with gold filigree work, centre black ground inlaid with a sprig of forget-me-not and a rose, opens at back, containing a photograph and some hair ; value £2. Identifiable.

The silver watch, the property of James Reid, stolen from a bedroom in Fabian’s Hotel, Greytown, has been recovered. It was found concealed in an adjoining bedroom.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, in a brothel in Oamaru, a silver lever hunting-watch, about half worn, maker Thomas Sellars, Oamaru, No. 18143 ; the property of Robert Niehol; value £4. Identifiable. About 10.50 p.m. on the 18th ultimo William Lander was assaulted by three men, names unknown, in Castle Street, near Stuart Street, Dunedin, and robbed of a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Rotherham, London, “W. W. G. Lander ” engraved with a needle inside case, value £4; and a blaclc-morocco purse with steel clasp, containing three sovereigns, six or seven shillings in silver, and a gold scarfpin with a red stone. Identifiable, except money. The only description that can be obtained of the offenders is that they are about twenty-five or twenty-six years of age, of slight build, and medium height; one was dressed in a light tweed-suit, and the other two in dark clothes, and all wore caps with double peaks.

Stealing from the hut of Thomas Raymond, Taupo Road : Suspicion attached to a Maori, named Fitzroy, twenty years of age, sft. 6in. high, dark hair, no hair on face; dressed in blue-serge sac-coat, bedford-cord trousers and leggings, and dark soft hat. He was seen wearing a pair of corduroy trousers answering the description of the pair stolen. He lives at Taupo.

Stolen on the 9th or 10th ultimo, from the dwelling of Henry Greenway, Great South Road, Auckland, a ladies’very small open crystal-faced silver Geneva keyless watch, gold winder, maker West, Ludgate Hill, London, number not known, case flowered ; value £5. Identifiable.
