About 11.15 p.m. on the 3rd instant, at Main South Road, Timaru, a pane of glass, value 55., was maliciously broken in the shop-door of George Brown.

A man, who gave his name as William Johnston, which is supposed to be a fictitious name, is charged with having, on the 2nd instant, uttered a forged cheque for £l4 to G. M. Ross, at the Bank of New Zealand, Queenstown. Description : Looked like a labourer, about forty years of age, 5 feet 5 or G inches high, rather stout build, black hair, black whiskers worn full ; dressed in dark clothes, respectable appearance. Identification doubtful. The cheque is drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Arrow, in favour of William Johnston, and purports to bo signed by Peter Butel, farmer, Arrow. Offender indorsed the chequo “ William Johnston.”

Between 6.30 p.m. on the Btli and 1.30 a.m. on the 9th instant a trolly, the property of the Government, was maliciously placed on the railway - line, near Waihola, which the midnight train from Dunedin ran into, breaking it to pieces. The engine and train sustained no damage.

William Henry Holland, charged on warrant with having uttered a forged cheque to George Pitcher, at Makaralca, has been arrested by Constable David Shaw, Wairoa Police.

The man charged with having obtained three pairs of boots from Thomas Willis, at Sydenham, by falso pretences,

has been arrested by Detective Maurice O’Connor, Christchurch Police, and sentenced to seven days’ labour. His name is John Donovan. The boots have been recovered.

Between the 10th ultimo and the 18tli instant, at Waikaia, the branches of two plum-trees, three apple-trees, and a cherry-tree, the property of James Handyside, were maliciously broken, thereby damaging them to the extent of 15s.

George Estall is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with having, on the Ist Ma.y last, on the Ist ultimo, and the 2nd instant, at Wellington, embezzled £2 55., the money of Thomas Campbell, by whom ho was employed delivering milk to customers. Description: A native of the colony, about fourteen years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, smart appearance, rather good-looking; dressed in dirty grey-tweed suit. He left complainant’s employment, at Karori, on the 14th instant, and is supposed to have gone to the Upper Hutt, where an uncle of his lives.

James Brady, alias Mcßrearty, alias Johnston, is charged, on warrant issued by the Westport Bench, with having, on the 7th February, 1883, at Westport, obtained £5 from George Holmes by means of a valueless cheque. Description : Irish, a miner and labourer, forty-two years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair beard whiskers and moustache, blue eyes, long nose, part of an anchor tattooed on right hand, slightly lame in right leg ; wore black-tweed coat, check trousers, and black soft hat. He was discharged from Mount Cook Gaol during the fortnight ended the sth instant, after undergoing a sentence of three years’ penal servitude for false pretences. He is supposed to have gone to look for work on the Wellington and Manawatu Railway-line.

A man, name unknown, is charged with having, on the 21st instant, at Napier, uttered a forged cheque for £1 to George Searfe. Description: English, looked like a labourer or station-hand, thirty-four years of age, about 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, dark sallow complexion, dark-brown beard whiskers and moustache; wore dark clothes and high black soft felt hat. Tho chequo is on the Bank of New South Wales, Napier, drawn in favour of J. Brown, and purports to be signed by James Marshall. On the 21st instant lie obtained two blank cheques at the Bank of New South Wales, Napier, one of which he forged and uttered to Mr. Searfe. He may have tho other cheque, which is No. 052305, still in his possession, or he may have committed another forgery.

Between the 14th and 19th ultimo, at The Grange, Waihemo, Otago District, ten rams, value £4O, the property of Arthur B. Kitchener, died from the effects of eating phosphorized oats, which were maliciously placed in the paddock in which the rams were kept.

James Mahon is charged, on warrant issued by the Whangarei Bench, with having, on the sth instant, at Kamo, embezzled a cheque for £2 12s. 4d.; the property of Alfred Pritchard and Co., by whom he was then employed as

a butcher. Description: A native of the colony, a butcher, stockman, &c., about twenty-eight years of age, about 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, brown hair, clean-shaved except thin brown moustache, grey eyes, round face, slightly bowlegged and stooped, quiet manner. He is fond of working amongst horses, and was formerly a stockman for Mr. A. Buckland, of Auckland. His parents live in Parnell.

Thomas Thompson is charged, on warrant issued by the Feilding Bench, with having, on the 19th instant, at Halcombe, uttered a forged cheque for £l2 to James A. Biley. Description: A Dane, a labourer, about thirty-three years of age, 5 feet 9 or 10 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, sandy beard whiskers and moustache; wore light - grey tweed suit and soft white hat; swaggering gait, speaks good English. The cheque is on the Bank of Australasia, Feilding, drawn in favour of offender, and purports to be signed by J. H. Murray, of Marton. He left Halcombe on the 21st instant by train for Marton.

The warrant issued by tho Wairoa Bench for the arrest of Herbert Joseph Williams, for embezzling a cheque for £l7O, the property of the Wairoa County Council, has been cancelled. Williams is still charged with forging the cheque.
