Between 1.30 and G. 30 a.m. on tlie sth ihstant an attempt was made to set fire to the Royal Hotel, Gisborne, the property of Henry Cannon. About a dozen matches, partly burned, were found under the front door of the hotel, and the door-mat found placed against the door in a position to screen the fire from observation until it caught a good hold of the building.
