Appointments as Constables. Thomas Stewart, No. 2643. Thomas Lintern, No. 2644. Robert John Malcolm, No. 2645. Peter O’Hanlon, No. 2646.
Promotions. Third-class Sergeants Robert Hazelton Sheppard, No. 1900, and John Myles, No. 1901, to be first-class sergeants in the Artillery Corps. Constable Alexander Ross, No. 1985, to be acting third-class sergeant.
Resignation. Constable William Hatherley, No. 1480.
Rewards. The sum of £3 has been awarded from the Reward Fund to Constable William Lawlor, Christchurch Police, in recognition of the energy and zeal displayed by him in connection with the arrest of Robert Williamson, James Kelso, Francis Malmanche, Frederick Pragnall, and Lily Garland, committed for trial for assaulting and robbing one George Craw in a brothel. At the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Christchurch, the woman was sentenced to two years’ labour, but the men were acquitted.
The sum of £1 10s. each has been awarded from the Reward Fund to Constables Albert Bennett, William Folley, and John McDonnell, Hokitika and Kumara Police, in recognition of their services in connection with the arrest of William Harvey, alias Frederick Middleton, sentenced at the late sittings of the Supreme Court, Hokitika, to five years’ penal servitude for horse-stealing and larceny.
The sum of £2 has been awarded by the Wellington and Wairarapa District Acclimatization Society to Constable Alfred Edward Remer, Wellington Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the detection and prosecution of William Moran and William Lessington, convicted for breaches of “ The Animals Protection Act, 1880.”
The sum of £1 has been awarded by the Customs Department to Constable James McAlister, Oamaru Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the prosecution of August Whiting, convicted for smuggling cigars.
The sum of £3 has been awarded by Mr. J. C. Harper, of Hackthornc, Upper Hinds, to Constable Robert Neill, Ashburton Police, in recognition of his services in connection with the prosecution of John Clark, George Vessoy, and Joseph Shepherd, fined 10s. each and costs for cutting four of Mr. Harper’s wire fences.
