Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Charles Wright is charged, on warrant issued by the Wellington Bench, with stealing £ll in silver, on the 11th instant, from the dwelling of Arthur Gadsby, at Taita. De«

scription: English, a cook, about twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark hair and complexion, clean-shaved except small side whiskers and moustache ; when last seen was dressed in blue-serge coat and vest, tweed trousers, and blue stitched hat.

John Fitzgibbons is charged, on warrant issued by the Hamilton Bench, with stealing, between the sth and 28th ultimo, from the Tamahere Hotel, Tamaherc, a round gold locket, value £1 10s., since recovered; the property of James T. Camp. Description: Irish, a tailor, forty-one years of age, 5 feet 5 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair and eyes, marks of corporal punishment on back. (See Police Gazette, 1884, page 126.) A man, name unknown, is charged with having, at 8 p.m. on the 7th instant, assaulted and robbed Maude Goodhue in her house, at Marton, of a common black-leather purse with steel clasp, one compartment, considerably worn inside, containing 17s. in silver. He is also charged with stealing, at the same time, from the house, a £5 note, TR marked on back, eleven £1 notes, and seven sovereigns. Purse and £5 note identifiable. Description : English, about twenty-nine years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, medium build, sharp features, rather fresh complexion, prominent forehead, darkbrown beard whiskers and moustache, when speaking squints with both eyes, nail of middle finger of left hand crushed or deformed and nail beginning to grow, hair beginning to fall off front of head ; wore dark-tweed coat and trousers and hard felt hat; did not look like a labourer. Identifiable.

Supposed stolen on the 2nd or 3rd instant, from the person of Frank Wylie, while drunk, at Invercargill, an English silver lever hunting-watch, maker Charles Freeman, No. 364791, hair guard attached; value £5. Identifiable.

Between 6.30 p.m. on the 9th and 8 a.m. on the 10th Instant the store of Edmund Alfred Field, Cumberland Street, Dunedin, was broken into, and a shoe-horn, value 6d., stolen. Identifiable.

Stolen about the end of January or early in February last, from the hut of Peter Martin, Humphrey’s Gully, Westland, a new silver albert guard, pattern long links connected by small links in the shape of a knot, a silver-mounted greenstone pendant attached; value £1 15s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to John Wesley, English or Scotch, a labourer, between twenty-six and thirty years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, medium build, thin features, fair hair, small fair beard and moustache, chin shaved; wore darktweed clothes. He has left Humphrey’s Gully.

Stolen on the 2nd instant, from a till in the bar of the Commercial Hotel, George Street, Port Chalmers, a cheque for £3 2s. on the National Bank, North Dunedin, drawn by D. J. Bacon, payable to a number; a£l note, and about £3 in silver; the property of Edwin Rubin Bolton. Cheque identifiable.

Stolen between the 15th January last and the Ist instant, from a bedroom in Werry’s boardinghouse, Timaru, anearlynew open-faced silver lever watch, No. 84153, maker’s name not known; the property of Andrew Lawrence; value £7. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Cora Lewis, alias Dora Lewson, who was staying in the house at the time. (For her description, &c., see Police Gazette, 1884, page 147.) She was sentenced at Timaru on the 14th ultimo to two months’ labour on two charges of larceny.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from the dwelling of Samuel Jacobs, South Town Belt, Christchurch, a small round box containing a gold brooch set with pearls, a gold ring set with pearls and garnets, and two pairs of gold earrings with coral drops. Identifiable.

(See Police Gazette, 1884, page 52.) The silver watch stolen from the dwelling of Michael Shea, at Washdyke Flat, has been recovered, and traced to the possession of Patrick Ryan, arrested by Detective Austin Kirby, Timaru Police. Suspicion no longer attaches to William Burden.

glass, the property of Bridget Espagne, from the Club Boardinghouse, Opunake, has been arrested for the offence by Constable William Henry Ryan, New Plymouth Police, and sentenced to three months’ labour. The opera-glass has been recovered.

(See Police Gazette, 1884, page 150.) Harry Pane, or Paine, suspected of stealing a gold ring, &c., from the dwelling of James Lambert, at Opunake, has been arrested for the offence by Constable William Henry Ryan, Now Plymouth Police, and sentenced to threo months’ labour.

Stolen between 8 p.m. on the 27th and 1 a.m. on the 28th ultimo, from the person of John McCaughan, while asleep at Lookout Point, near Dunedin, a silver lever hunting-watch, maker Hamilton, London, No. 7532; value £4. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Edward Rankin, who was with complainant when he wont to sleep. Description: Scotch, a station-hand, about thirty-five years of age, 5 feet 8 inches high, stout build, dark complexion and eyes, dark hair beard whiskers and moustache, mark of recent cut above bridge of nose ; dressed in blue double-breasted coat, moleskin trousers, dark soft felt hat, and blucher boots ; carried a blue-blanket swag. He is supposed to have gone to Galloway Station, near Clyde, where he has been previously employed.

Between 7 and 8 p.m. on the 7th instant the dwelling of Joseph Meads, Groytown, Wellington District, was broken into, but nothing was stolen. The front door was opened with a pick-lock, part of which was found in the lock of the door.

Stealing money, the property of Frederick William Butterworth, from the Lutheran Restaurant, Dunedin : Edward Hughes, suspected of this offence, has been arrested by Detective Austin Kirby, Timaru Police, and sentenced to six months’ labour. £3 ss. 3d. of the stolen money has been recovered.

Supposed stolen on the Ist instant, from the person of Cornelius Collins, while drunk, at South Dunedin, two £5 notes and ten £1 notes.
