(See Police Gazette, 1885, page 35.) John Christopher Cuff, charged on warrant with uttering a forged promissory note to John Orson McArdell, at Invercargill, and who escaped from the custody of Constable Thomas Whitty, at Waiau, has been arrested by Detective Robert R. Jones, Christchurch Police.

John William Wentworth is charged, on warrant issued by the Invercargill Bench, with having, about the sth January last, at Invercargill, obtained £55 from Max Bulling by false pretences. Description: English, a farmer and contractor, thirty-one years of age, about 5 feet 7inches high, very stout build, fair fresh complexion, brown hair, clean-shaved except small dark moustache and goatee; dressed in blueserge suit and black hard hat with leaf drawn down over eyes; carries a black walking-stick. He was seen at Invercargill on the 4th instant. He is well known at Ashburton and Christchurch.

Edward Larkins is charged, on warrant issued at Queensland, with embezzling £2 14s. 4d. and other amounts; the property of the Graziers’ Butchery Company, Towonga. Description: A native of Ipswich, Queensland, about twenty years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, slight build, sallow complexion, thin face, small features, jaws full at back of head, prominent ears, black hair, no beard, quiet manner. It is supposed he left Queensland on the 7th instant by steamer for this colony. His arrest is very desirable.

On the 26th ultimo, supposed between Balclutha and Dunedin, one of the leather cushions in a first-class railway carriage, the property of the Government, was maliciously cut and damaged to the value of about 15s.

John Vickery, alias Bennett, alias Brown, is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with having, on the 25th ultimo, at Auckland, endeavoured to obtain £65 from Samuel Cohen by false pretences. Description : Supposed English, forty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, strong build, dark complexion, dark hair, clean-shaved ; wore greytweed suit and black dress hat; gentlemanly address and appearance. He lately arrived from Sydney. He left Auckland on the 26th ultimo by the steamer “ Wairarapa ” for southern ports, accompanied by his wife, who is about twenty-four years of age, medium height, slight build, dark hair and eyes.

Oswald A. Herzog is charged, on warrant issued by the Auckland Bench, with having, on the 2nd instant, at Auckland, defrauded the Colonial Insurance Company of £l5O. Description : A German, a cabinetmaker, thirty-four years of age, about 5 feet 9 inches high, fair complexion, light hair, full light beard whiskers and moustache, but may have shaved; good address, speaks English well; wears dark clothes, black hard hat, and blue-silk tie in gold scarf-ring, sometimes wears a heavy gold ring with large crown stone. He left Onehunga on the Bth instant by the steamer “ Penguin ” for Wellington. He has in his possession fifteen £lO Bank of New Zealand notes. It is said that a man answering his description left the steamer at New Plymouth.

C. A. Ross is charged, on warrant issued by the Leeston Bench, with having, on the 19th or 20th January last, at Selwyn, obtained £1 from William Blacklor by means of a valueless cheque. Description: Supposed Scotch, a commercial traveller, about twenty-two years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, slight build, fair complexion, light-blue eyes, fair hair, very small fair beard whiskers and moustache; wore light-grey tweed suit and grey-tweed hat. Ho is also charged with having uttered valueless cheques at Dunedin and Invercargill. (See Police Gazette, 1885, page 25.) He was dismissed from the Telegraph Department at Dunsandel, Canterbury District, about a year ago. He has a brother a railway stationmaster at Wyndham, Southland District.

Between the 16th and 26th ultimo about sixty panes of glass, value £3, were maliciously broken in the workshop of William Henry Potter, Liddle Street, Invercargill.

Between the 6th and Bth instant three panes of glass, value £1 55., were maliciously broken in an unoccupied house at Silverstream, South Canterbury; the property of William Henry Smith.
