Stealing Otherwise than from the Person or from Dwellings.

Stealing gold from the gold-mining claim of John Kelly and party, at Greenstone: Cum Chong is charged, on warrant issued by the Kumara Bench, with having committed this offence. Description: A Chinaman, about thirty-seven years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, dark-olive complexion, black hair, no hair on face, large head, very broad flat features, an upper front tooth near left side out; when last seen wore dark-brown paget-coat and old patched dark-grey tweed trousers. Identifiable. He left Greenstone on the evening of the 30th ultimo, saying that he was going to Dunedin by way of Christchurch, A hat and tomahawk found in the claim have been identified as belonging to him.

Two men named Whiting and Clark are charged, on warrants issued by the Otaki Bench, with the larceny as bailees, on the 7th or Bth instant, at Ohau, near Otaki, of a 12-inch broad axe, two American axes, two slashers, a 7ft. cross-cut saw, all branded CRS in letters about half an inch long on tho iron; the property of Cecil Raymond Seymour; value £4 10s. Identifiable. Description : Whiting is English, thirty-five years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair beard whiskers and moustache ; wore a white guernsey. Clark is English, twenty-one or twenty-two years of age, about 5 feet 8 inches high, dark complexion, very little hair on face. They are supposed to have gone to Wilkie’s railway contract, or to the new bushfelling contract near Manawatu River.

Stolen on the 24th or 25th ultimo, from an office attached to the Newmarket stables, Manor Place, Dunedin, a singlebreasted dark-grey tweed overcoat, three outside pockets and an inside breast-pocket, bone buttons, value £3; a pair of brown-leather leggings, value £1; a horse-rug made of bagging and lined with grey woollen cloth, value 10s.; and an American bed-rug, blue on inside and brown-and-red on outside, value £2 ; the property of Hugh Falconer. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to William Duff, alias Stewart. (For his description, &c., see Police Gazette , 1884, page 131.) He is charged on warrant with disobeying an order to pay £1 per week towards the support of his five children. He is supposed to have gone to the Taieri.

Stolen between the sth and 7th ultimo, between Riverton and Invercargill, or at Invercargill, a white woollen knitted shawl; the property of John Boniface; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth or 6th instant, from the forecabin of the steamer “ Stormbird,” at Wellington, a pair of nearlynew dark-blue cloth trousers, tucked up at bottoms and roughly stitched to shorten them, value £2 2s ; and a new double-breasted fancy black-and-red silk vest, lined at bottom with yellow leather, value £3 10s.; the property of Nicholas Hammond. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth or 6th instant, from the clothes-line of George Irwood, at Temuka, a flannel petticoat, a calico chemise, an apron, and a white-linen pocket-handkerchief ; value 9s. Petticoat, chemise, and apron identifiable.

Stolen on the 7th or Bth instant, from Glen Avenue, Mornington, near Dunedin, a tin of whitelead, with J and E marked on side; the property of William Bush; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 10th instant, in the Salvation Army

Barracks, Taranaki Street, Wellington, a silver lever Waltham hunting-watch, No. 1082780 ; the property of Joseph McDonald Graham; value £5 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Mary Edwards, a member of the Salvation Army. Description: A native of the colony, about eighteen years of age, 5 feet high, fair complexion, red hair cut short in front. She left Wellington on the 14th instant for Nelson.

Stolen on the sth instant, from the cart of John McCarthy, in Power’s stable-yard, McLaggan Street, Dunedin, a brown-paper parcel, containing lib. of grey Shetland worsted, a cut of white worsted, and 2 yards of grey flannel; value 6s. 3d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 4th or sth instant, from the clothes-line of J. M. H. Lush, Mount Pleasant, Thames, a ladies’ nightdress, a pair of drawers, two chemises, marked CEL, and a nightshirt, marked “J. M. H. Lush ” in ink ; value £l. Identifiable.

Stolen on the Ist instant, from Wood Street, Ponsonby, Auckland, a large spade, very large and long blade, iron very far up on handle ; the property of Joseph Reilly; value Bs. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen during the night of the 6th instant, from the door of the hotel of George Chick, Mount Street, Port Chalmers, a door-scraper, 15 inches long, 10 inches wide, and 5 inches high, knob broken off one end, value 10s.; and a common door-mat, 2 feet long by 18 inches wide, value ss. Doorscraper identifiable.

Stolen between the Ist and 3rd instant, from the woolShed at Moeraki Station, near Hampden, 500 dried rabbitskins, tied with cord in bundles of ten; the property of Thomas McCauley; value £6 ss. Identification doubtful.

Stolen during the night of the 6th instant, from the clothes-line of Thomas Kelly, at Maungatawhiri, Mercer, a pair of grey-tweed trousers, a striped-cotton shirt, and a whitecotton undershirt; value £1 ss. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to a man, name unknown, Irish, about twenty-four years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, slight build, rather sallow complexion, thin dark beard whiskers and moustache ; wore old grey coat, dirty tweed trousers, and soft tweed hat; carried a small bundle in his hand. He left Papatoitoi by brain for Auckland or Penrose.

Stolen between 7.30 p.m. on tho 11th and 8 a.m. on the 12th instant, from the Roman Catholic Chapel, Geraldine, a round silver ciborium, about 7 inches high, raised cover fitting very tightly, with cross on top, “ CEuvre Apostolique ” engraved at foot, gilt inside ; a silver chalice, 10 inches high, a cross and some engraving at foot, gilt inside ; a plain thin silver paten, about 4 inches in diameter, slightly concave from edge to centre; a round silver pyx, 2£ inches in diameter, and 1 inch deep; a round silver vessel used for holding holy oil, 3£ inches long, divided by screws into three compartments, “Inf.” “Cat.” “Chr.” engraved on outside; a few coins out of the poor-box, and four keys from the doors; the property of the Rev. Father Thomas Keane; Value £25. Identifiable except money and door-keys.

Stolen on the 11th or 12th instant, from a railway-truck between Mosgiel and Dunedin, or at Dunedin, 47£ yards of dark-grey Mosgiel tweed, “ 39 ” woven in yellow worsted at each end; the property of the Mosgiel Woollen Company; Value £9 10s, Identifiable. The offence may have been committed by sailors, who may offer the tweed for sale when they leave Dunedin.

Craighead. A nearly-new double-breasted overcoat, dark-blue rough cloth, lined with dark material, black-velvet collar, three

outside pockets, one of them a breast-pocket, two buttons at back, made something like a constables’ overcoat, a pair of men’s kid gloves, and a wo< den pipe in one of the pockets, value £3 10s.; and a hard brown-felt hat, about half-worn, value 7s, 6d. ; the property of 11. Andrews. A blue pilotcloth double-breasted overcoat, pea-jacket make, lined with grey cloth, two outside pockets, value £2 10s., in the pockets of which were a pair of ladies’ new kid gloves, value 10s. 6d., a merino muffler, value 4s. 6d., a pair of brown knitted mittens, a wooden pipe, a tobacco-pouch and tobacco, and Bs. or 10s. in silver; the property of Walter Martin. A nearly-new black-fur cape, value £2, a leather reticule, “ Presented to Miss Mary Ann Kidd ” engraved on steel clasp near handle, value about £1 10s., a purse, some silver, pieces of ribbon, papers, &c.; the property of Mary Ann Kidd.
