Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Stolen on tho 7th instant, from the dwelling of Ah Hay, at Parawai, Thames, two deposit receipts on the Bank of New Zealand, Thames, for £lO4 and £66 respectively, £3 15s. in silver, and two gold rings, plain-hoop pattern, one with open joint, the other with Chinese characters engraved on the inside; both value £4. Deposit receipts and rings identifiable. Suspicion attached to Ah Ling, a Chinaman, about forty years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high. He left tho Thames on tho 7th instant by the steamer “ Rotomahana” for Auckland.

Between 10 p.m. on the 7th and 6.15 a.m. on the Bth instant the railway station at Penrose, Auckland, was broken into, a desk in the office broken open, and £1 13s. in silver and sevenpence in coppers stolen; the property of the Government.

Stolen on tho 25th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Pacific Hotel, Russell, Bay of Islands, an open-faced English silver lever watch, maker Holmes Cheade Stoffe, number not known, back worn smooth, slight dent in back, faint buff or yellowish white face, a small piece of enamel chipped off face near edge of dial exposing the copper back, top of screw in mainspring slightly defaced; the property of George Neild; value £B. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the Provincial Hotel, Auckland, a black overcoat with hip-pockets and an inside left-breast pocket, a tear about 2 inches long on right shoulder, body and sleeves lined with black silesia, the property of Patrick Farley, value £2 55.; and a large German concertina with six squares, in black wooden case, which was locked, the property of Jeremiah O’Brien, value £1 18s. Identifiable.

Stolen on tho 27th ultimo, from the dwelling of James Sullivan, at Onehunga, a large blue pilot-cloth ulster overcoat, about half-worn, no buttons or strap at back, lined with grey checked tweed, buttons covered with cloth, one of sleeves repaired near cuff; value £2. Stealing from the dwelling of William Lissiman, at Flaxton : It has now been ascertained that Walter Flicks, alias James Stacey, is the name of the man suspected. He was discharged from the ship “Cleopatra,” at Lyttelton, on the 30th May last, and subsequently joined the barque “ Rimac,” from which he deserted on the sth June.

Between 10 p.m. on the 27th and 8 a.m. on tho 28th ultimo the dwelling of William Williams, Waimea, Westland, was broken into, and three £1 notes and £1 in silver stolen.

Stolen between the 26th and 28th ultimo, from the Star and Garter Hotel, Oamaru, a commercial travellers’ brownleather sample-case, about 15 by 15 by 9 inches, about halfworn, fastened with two leather straps, nine compartments, containing nine small sample bottles of wine and spirits; the property of John Matheson; value £3. Case identifiable.

Stolen on the 26th ultimo, from the shop of John Walker, City Market, Auckland, a seven-chambered nickle-plated revolver, “Blue Jacket, I£, 22 long,” on barrel, maker Hazard, Queen Street, Auckland; value £lss. Identifiable.

Breaking into a shed at Auckland, and stealing tools, the property of Wellesley Gardiner: John Taylor, alias George Clune, has been arrested by Detective John Mitchell Walker, Auckland Police, and sentenced to six months’ labour for this offence and five other charges of larceny. The adze and brace have been recovered.

Stolen between the 19th and 22nd ultimo, from the dwelling of Mrs. Ann Stewart, Longwood, near Riverton, a gold bracelet, a gold leaf with seven rubies set in it, attached to bracelet by a piece of yellow-silk braid, value £lO ; a gold broach, twisted snake-pattern, value £1 10s.; two greenstone pendants, one mounted with gold, the other plain, value £110s.; a small fine-gold necklet, with locket attached, containing two photographs, value £1 10s.; a hair bracelet with three plaits each an inch wide, value 10s.; a towel and an antimaccassar, value 7s. All identifiable.

Stolen on the 25th ultimo, from the Commercial Hotel, Auckland, a dark-tweed overcoat, the property of William Kincaid, value £3; and a single-breasted waterproof overcoat, plaid lining, side pockets and a small ticket-pocket on right side, the property of a Mr. Seaman, value £3 10s. Identifiable. Mr. Kincaid’s coat has been recovered. It was pawned on the day it was stolen by a person at present unknown.

Breaking into and stealing from the shop of J. F. Norris, Christchurch: Some of the pencils and Faber’s leads have been recovered, and traced to the possession of Charles Haynes, who has been arrested by Detectives Thomas Neil and Maurice O’Connor, Christchurch Police, and committed for trial on this and four other charges of a similar nature.

Between the 12th and 27th June last the hut of the late John Fitzgerald, at Wyndham, was broken into, and the following stolen: A small stove (part of the stove was left in the hut), an old saddle, a bridle, about two dozen rabbittraps, a pair of bo*ots, a suit of clothes, a felt hat, two riddles about 18 inches in diameter, a spade, a grapnel, a hoe, a bag of feathers, about two bags of rabbitskins, a small bag of parsnip-seed, some bedding, books, and papers, and a small box containing a prayer-book, papers, letters, &c. Hoe and stove identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the person of James Dixon, in Union Street, Dunedin, an open-faced English silver lever watch, maker Bernard Hagerty, No. 53834, value £6 10s.; and a gold albert guard, long plain-link pattern, front link stamped “ Berger,” about l£oz. weight, value £7. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the person of Hans Olsen, in the Royal Hotel, Waimate, about £7, and an open-faced English silver lever-watch, No. 42002, maker’s name not known, value £7. Watch identifiable.

About 7 p.m. on the 7th instant the dwelling of JohnUre, at Otepopo, was broken into, and the following stolen: A nearly-new cow-hide saddle, JU marked under off flap, a hole in each flap for surcingle to pass through, leather crupper and girth attached; an old concertina, imitation rosewood; a common yellow handkerchief, partly worn ; and an old shirt; value £3 12s. 6d. Identifiable. The shirt has since been recovered. Suspicion attached to George Lyons, who was seen concealod in the Township of Herbert near

where the shirt was found. Description: A Yorkshireman, thirty-five or forty years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, sunken eyes, full black heard whiskers and moustache, a large space between front teeth ; wore black overcoat and hard black-felt hat. Supposed to have gone to Maheno or Oamaru.

Between 11 p.m. on the 7th and G a.m. on the Bth instant the Masonic Hotel, St. Andrew, Canterbury, was broken into, and 12s. 6d. in silver, consisting of sixpenny and threepenny pieces, and about a dozen cigars, stolen; the property of Walter Frank Brown.

Between 11 p.m. on the 2nd and 7 a.m. on the 3rd instant the shop of Elizabeth Carpenter, New Brighton Road, Bingsland, Christchurch, was broken into, and about 201 b. or 301 b. of nail-rod tobacco, value about £B, stolen.

Stolen on the 3rd instant, from a box in the bedroom of Frederick Wallis, hotelkeeper, Hawera, a £5 note, about nine £1 notes, and £2 in silver.

Stolen on the 7th instant, from the person of John Hamilton, while drunk in a brothel in Ribble Street, Oamaru, five £lO notes and five £5 notes. Suspicion attached to Thomas Keating and Henry Smith, who were drinking with him in the brothel. Description: Keating is Irish, a labourer, twenty-nine years of age, 5 feet 9| inches high, medium build, fresh complexion, grey eyes, sandy hair beard whiskers and moustache, bad irregular teeth; dressed in dark clothes and dark soft felt hat. Stolen on the 10th instant, in an hotel at Aramoho, near Wanganui, anew black-leather pocketboolc with black leaves and one compartment, containing a £5 note on the Bank of New Zealand and some receipts; the property of Abraham Warner. Receipts identifiable.

Stolen on the 6th instant, from the person of Juan Leonarde, in the Somerset Hotel, Duvauchelle’s Bay, Akaroa, a £5 noto and four £1 notes on the Bank of New Zealand.

Stolen on tho 2nd instant, from the shop-door of A. Hayes, at Ashburton, a dark-grey Kaiapoi-cloth single-breasted overcoat, size 3£, dark lining ; value £1 12s. 6d. Identifiable.

During the night of the 11th instant the shop of Charles Kearns, Tees Street, Oamaru, was broken into, and the following stolen: A pair of grey-tweed trousers, size 5, about half-worn, value 10s.; a grey-tweed sac-coat, size 5, about half-worn, value 155.; a dark-tweed paget-coat, bound with black-silk braid, two outside pockets and a small card-pocket with flaps, value 15s. ; a ladies’ 9-carat gold ring, with four pearls and a blue stone in centre, one of the pearls supposed missing, value 10s.a ladies’ 9-carat gold keeper-ring, had been cut to make it smaller, and joined somewhat clumsily, value 10s.; three gentlemen’s silver rings, one buckle pattern and one strap pattern, value 2s. 6d. each; a pair of elasticside boots, with toe-caps, size no nails, value £1; a pair of elastic-side boots, size 9, brass sprigs in soles and heels, value £1; a pair of elastic-side boots, size 9, very narrow toes, no nails or heel-plates, value £1; a pair of watertight boots, size 9, with nails and tips, value £1 ; and a pair of secondhand shoes with toe-caps and Oxford fronts, size 10, value 10s. All identifiable. Suspicion attached to George Wigmore, a native of North America, a sailor, twenty-one years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, medium build, sallow complexion, grey eyes, black curly hair, no hair on face except small dark moustache; generally wears dark clothes and black Scotch cap, may be wearing an old dark pilotcloth overcoat.

Stolen between the sth and 9th instant, from Wain’s Hotel, Princes Street, Dunedin, a nearly-new double-breasted blue whitney overcoat, three outside pockets with flaps and an inside breast-pocket, black wooden buttons ; the property of Charles W. Chamberlain; value £4. Identifiable.

On the morning of the 4th instant the Nottingham Castle Hotel, Piako, was broken into, and the following stolen: A deal box containing seventeen £1 notes, twelve halfsovereigns, £4 in silver, a cheque for £3, No. 92621, on the Union Bank of Australia, drawn by William Price in favour of H. Cook; a gold hunting lever-watch, maker McCabe, number not known, “ 3115 ” scratched on front case, “ botched by Findlay ” scratched on inner back case, value £ls; a gold chain, snake-pattern, value £10; and a number of papers; the property of Robert Samuel Browno.
