Deserting Wives and Families, &c.
Henry Jupp is charged, on warrant issued by the Christchurch Bench, with deserting his wife, at Christchurch, since the 9th ultimo. Description: English, a carter, fortysix years of age, 5 feet 9 inches high, fair hair, small fair beard whiskers and moustache, light-blue eyes, very roundshouldered, teeth all out except two in front, large flat feet, slightly lame ; dressed in blue calico slop or dark-grey tweed coat and vest, corduroy trousers, watertight boots, and soft black-felt hat; impediment in speech; fond of drink. He left Lyttelton about four months ago by the steamer “ Rotorua ” for Wellington, taking with him two horses and a dray, supposed with the intention of working on Messrs. O’Malley and Pepperell’s railway contract, Foxton.
William Gill, alias Gillett, is charged on warrant of commitment to Waipawa Gaol for seven days, in default of paying £2 fine and 15s. costs, for being drunk and committing a nuisance on the railway premises, at Takapu. Description : Irish, has been a soldier, about forty-two years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, stout build, fair complexion, very red face, nose broken, fair beard whiskers and moustache, turning grey ; very dirty appearance.
(See Police Gazette, 1883, page 173.) James Edwards, charged on warrant of commitment for fourteen days to Timaru Gaol, in default of paying £2 fine, has been arrested by Constable James Murphy, Dunedin Police.
Robert Bird is charged, on warrant issued by the Dunedin Bench, with deserting his wife, at Sydney, New South Wales, since the 16th December, 1882. Description : English, a bricklayers’ labourer, thirty-six years of age, 5 feet 71 inches high, stout build, fresh complexion, sandy hair, reddish whiskers and moustache, cut marks on face and forehead, tattoo marks on both arms, “ Emma ” on one of arms; usually wears dark coat and vest and moleskin trousers. In December last he was in the employment of Mr. Carter, Billey Bong Station, Marsden, New South Wales. He requested his letters to be addressed in care of Mr. Jenkins, Picton Arms Hotel, Newmarket, Sydney. He may go to Western Australia.
Michael Morrison and Henry Poppleton absconded from the Caversham Industrial School, near Dunedin, on the 27th ultimo. Description: Morrison is fourteen and a half years of age, tall for his age, pale complexion; wore light moleskin suit. Poppleton is twelve and a half years of ago,
stout build, ruddy complexion; wore check moleskin suit, They are supposed to have gone to Oamaru or Invercargill.
