Housebreaking, Stealing from the Person and from Dwellings.

Daniel Malone is charged, on warrant issued by the Whangarei Bench, with stealing, on the 12th ultimo, from the person of John Keegan, at Whangarei, a double-cased silver Waltham watch, number not known, value £4. Identifiable. Description: Irish, a bushman, about fifty years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, stout build, dark-brown hair beard whiskers and moustache worn full and tinged with grey ; dressed in dark-tweed coat and trousers and soft blackfelt hat. He left Whangarei on the 14th ultimo by the steamer “ McGregor ” for Auckland.

Jones, alias Johnson Metcalf, charged on warrant with stealing a coat, the property of Charles Iluggleston, from the Governor Browne dining-rooms, has been arrested by Detective Edward Hughes, Auckland Police, and sentenced to three months’ labour.

Antonio, charged on warrant with having violently assaulted and robbed Alfred Grey, at Wellington. A man, believed to be identical with the offender, who gave his name as Marten Le Light, was arrested at Martinborough on the 9th ultimo for this offence by Constable William Campbell, Wellington Police, but as the complainant could not then bo found he was admitted to bail on his own recognisance to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Eeatherston, on the 21st ultimo. He did not appear, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest for failing to do so. He left Masterton on the 17th ultimo, and went towards Eketahuna, carrying a blue blanket-swag. The complainant in the case has been found.

Stolen on the 9th ultimo, from the shop-door of John Rendell, Grey Street, Auckland, about 9 yards of felt carpet, red-and-green-diamond pattern ; value 12s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the dwelling of Michael Galvan, Piako Swamp, Auckland, three £1 notes, two shillings, a black-cloth coat, value £2 55., and a pair of greytweed trousers, value £1 ss. Coat and trousers identifiable. Suspicion attached to two Maoris. It is supposed they went to Morrinsville or Te Aroha.

Stolen between the 7th December last and the 15tli ultimo, from a dwelling at Coal Creek Station, Waihemo, Otago, a ladies’ gold chain, rope pattern, one link missing, brass bar, value £3; and a large red cornelian breast-pin with a representation of our Saviour’s head engraved thereon, plain gold border; value £1 10s.; the property of Charles Hall. Identifiable.

Stolen on the sth ultimo, from the shop of Henry Parrett, Selwyn Street, Sydenham, a ham about 12 lb. weight; value 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the shop-window of A. and T. Inglis, Manse Street, Dunedin, a pair of men’s grey striped-tweed trousers and a vest of same material; value £1 7s. 6d. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th ultimo, from the hut of Archibald Howie, Coal Creek, near Ross, a leather purse with two steel clasps, containing a £5 note on the Bank of New Zealand and 6s. 6d. in silver. Purse identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo, from the person of William Maitland, in the Peacock Hotel, Princes Street, Dunedin, a gold hunting lever watch, No. 29993 ; value £2O. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 12th or 13th ultimo, from the person of John Stuart, in the Wairengaahika Hotel, Wairengaahika, Poverty Bay, a pocket-book containing an order on Graham and Co. for £ls ss. drawn by James Orr, five or six £1 notes, and some silver. Order and pocket-book identifiable.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, in Murphy’s Hotel, Woodville, a black wallet 6 inches long by about 4 inches wide, brass fastening, with anew elastic band round it, containing three £2O notes, Nos. 208, 216, and 217, a £5 note, No. 1914, all on the Bank of Australasia, Dunedin, and about thirty cards marked “Mr. J. Prince Stallard;” the property of J. Prince Stallard. Wallet and cards identifiable.

Stolen on the morning of the 26th December last, from a till in the shop of H. J. Murphy, Wellington Street, Auckland, about 9s. in coppers.

Stolen on the 22nd ultimo, from the person of Martha Robertson, in Gilmour’s grocers’ shop, Princes Street, Dunedin, an old brown-leather purse with elastic band, three compartments, value 25., containing six £1 notes on the National Bank, 6£d., and a receipt for money paid to Martin and Watson for coal. Purse only identifiable.

Stolen on the 19th ultimo, from the person of Miss Campbell Bathgate, at the Dunedin or Port Chalmers Rail-way-station, a silver-mounted bluish-morocco-leather purse with handle, containing half a sovereign, silver, and postage stamps; value 75.; some visiting cards, and a Mornington tram ticket. Purse and cards identifiable.

Stolen between the 18fch and 20th ultimo, from a bedroom in the dwelling of Woods, Crosbie, and Co., Lambton Quay, Wellington, a rough flat gold nugget breast-pin ; the property of Alexander Stephens ; value £2. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 14th or 15th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Northern Wairoa Hotel, Dargaville, a silver lever huntingwatch, maker Rotherham, London, No. 2423; the property of William Wilson; value £B. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Joe Baker, who was staying in the hotel. Description: About twenty years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, slight build, sandy complexion, tender eyes, lame, shuffling gait. He left Dargaville on the morning of the 15th ultimo by steamer for Auckland.

Supposed stolen on the 17th ultimo, from the person of Edward, a Maori, in the Criterion Hotel, Akaroa, an openfaced silver lever watch, maker’s name and number not known, silver chased dial, plain gold-gilt figures, bow broken off, an oval-linked brass guard tied to watch with a piece of string, a greenstone pendant and a brass key attached; value £3. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 17th or 18th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Somerset Hotel, head of Akaroa Bay, a brown waterproof overcoat, nearly new, lined with scarlet tweed, made for a man about 6 feet high ; the property of Henry Cross ; value £3. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Salvanter and Martin Sly, members of Woodyear’s circus troupe, who occupied the bedroom from which the coat was stolen. Description : Salvanter is about 5 feet 4 inches high, stiff build, dark hair turning grey, grey moustache, American appearance ; wore dark-tweed clothes ; supposed to be manager for the troupe. Sly is about 5 feet 10 inches high, medium build, dark complexion, dark moustache; wore dark-tweed suit. They went to Christchurch.

Stolen on the 20th ultimo, from a bedroom in the Bush Hotel, Geraldine, an English silver lever hunting -watch,maker’s name and number not known, “T. Corkery ” engraved on inside of back case; the property of Thomas Corkery; value £4 10s. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to Morgan Sweeney, Irish, a labourer, twenty-six years of age, 5 feet 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion,, blue eyes, prominent nose, light-brown hair, sandy beard whiskers and moustache. He is at present employed in the Geraldine District.

Stolen on the Ist ultimo, from the person of Francis Gedge while asleep in the Domain, Auckland, a small silver lever watch, maker Rotherham, London, No. 24877, and a brass chain, composed of three small links and a large link alternately; value £5 15s. Identifiable.

Stolen between the Bth and 11th ultimo, from the shop of John Ross, College Road, Auckland, a binocular glass, having a slight dent in brass near small end; value £1 10s. Identifiable.

Stolen on the 18th ultimo, from the dwelling of Henry Danker, Donnelly’s Creek, near Ross, 19s. 6d. in silver.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, from the tent of William Davis, at Springston, Canterbury, a nearly-new brown-tweed suit, grease mark on back of coat, a flannel under-shirt patched on tail, a white muffler with black spots, a pair of cotton drawers, and a whip handle with brass ferrules; value £5. Identifiable. Suspicion attached to four swagmen, who it is supposed went to Leeston.

Stolen on the 23rd or 24th ultimo, from the hut of Martin Ford, at Wairio, Southland, a nearly-new pair of watertight boots, size 8 ; a blue-cloth sac-coat, considerably worn under right shoulder, one of pockets torn about 12 inches and aewn ; a small pocket-book with elastic band containing a £1 note, and a small memorandum-book ; value £2 6s. Identifiable except money.

Stolen on the 24th or 25th ultimo, from the dwelling of Michael Casey, Lee Flat Station, Waipori, a silver lever hunting Waltham keyless watch, No. 1232149, compensation balance, “M.J.C.” on front case; value £7. Identifiable.
